Strengths: A strong-armed QB with prototypical NFL size. Is tall, well-built and still has some room on his frame to bulk up if necessary. Gets very good zip on deep-out throws, can fit the ball into tight spots and can drive the ball downfield better than most college passers. Release quickness is adequate and has a good over-the-top delivery. Is a streaky passer that can get into a rhythm and pick defenses apart when protection holds up. Sells play-fakes well and seems to be most comfortable working off play-action. Flashes the ability to throw on the run and squares his shoulders up when rolling left. Is tough and can bounce back from a big hit.
Weaknesses: While improved decision making slightly during the 2007 season still puts the ball in harms way too much and needs to do a better job of taking what the defense gives him. Doesn't appear to read defenses all that well and throws into coverage too much as a result. Doesn't always go through progressions, frequently fails to look safeties off and telegraphs too many of his throws. Trusts his arm strength too much and tries to fit the ball into tight spots far too often. Holds onto the ball too long and takes too many big hits inside the pocket. Not a great athlete and top-end speed is below average. Does a poor job of avoiding pressure and is not a threat to run. Put up some of his biggest numbers against lower level of competition and is extremely in consistent. Does not take criticism well and has had some trouble dealing with the media in an appropriate manner.
Overall: In his first three seasons at Penn State (2004-'06), Morelli appeared in 24 games (13 starts, all in '06), completing 226 of 419 attempts (53.9 percent) for 2,624 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a senior, he completed 234 of 402 pass attempts for 2,651 yards (58.2 percent), 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games. Morelli has the size and arm strength to make it in the NFL but he comes up short in just about every other category. He isn't a good athlete, there are concerns about his mental toughness and, arguably most importantly, he never came close to realizing his awesome potential as a passer while at Penn State. His marginal accuracy and poor decisions are enough to drive a coach mad at the next level. While he has some good tools to develop, we wouldn't bother with Morelli any earlier than the seventh round.
