The Arizona Cardinals are seeking a new naming-rights partner for their Glendale stadium because the University of Phoenix wants to cut short by nine years a 20-year sponsorship deal, both sides announced Tuesday.

Apollo Education Group, parent of the University of Phoenix, has been hit with declining enrollment, regulatory scrutiny and widespread layoffs. The contract had called for University of Phoenix to pay the NFL team $154.5 million over two decades, an average of $7.7 million annually. A new deal likely could double those annual payments to the Cardinals, according to a NFL marketing expert.

I'll admit, UoP had finally cemented itself in my consciousness, it'll be a little weird to change it, but I HATED the name, especially coming off of 17 years of Sun Devil Stadium.

In terms of local companies who are national consumer facing companies that could potentially have interest: PetSmart, Go Daddy, Lifelock, Best Western (not sure a franchiser would be interested though), Cold Stone/Kahala Brands, DriveTime, Swift/Knight Transportation, Mobile Mini, PF Changs, U-Haul, Sprouts -- I'm not sure that other large companies like Avnet, Freeport, Republic Services, and Insight have enough direct consumer channels to justify a stadium rights deal -- and, it could very easily be a non-local company as well.

The Cards and the facility have reached a level where the team isnt limited to local businesses on the naming -- in fact, i would be surprised if it were a locally hq'd business
