You've been BIM'd!:jedi:, nice to see that ASU education hard at work.

Oh, and just because other boards get spammed doesn't mean it's OK to do it to this one. That in itself is one of the dumber things I've ever read on this board.

You forgot you're. Pretty sure I knew both of those before I got to ASU.

Let these guys talk their football, we'll start our own offseason thread. We did enough talking on the football field last Saturday, we don't need to anymore on their offseason thread. Go Devils!

From a Devil Fan, and a UofA Football hater (though I like Lute and the basketball program; and I can straddle the fence since I have a degree from UofA and ASU).

I hope UofA becomes a better football team. I hope that their begin to recruit more talent. I hope that Stoops does learn how to coach. WHY? Becuase I am sick of "Arizona" as being an after thought in the nation as a football state. The Better UofA does - ASU will match it - or be thrown out on their ear. Example - in my opinion, if Stoops doesn't beat Washington St, Oregon, and California - Koetter keeps his job after beating UofA. However, since Stoops did what Koetter is incapable of - it is egg on the face of ASU and they had to do something about it immediately.

So, at the end of the day, I want UofA football to crush every "out of conference" opponent, have winning records in the Pac-10, and take their end-of-November beatings like the kitties they are. Seriously.

Three cheers for the UofA coming in second behind ASU in the Pac-10 every year!

Finally... An ASU fan who is only SLIGHTLY delusional. :D

Offense must make strides

UA needs to develop backup for QB Tuitama
ANALYSIS By JOHN MOREDICH
Tucson Citizen

The Arizona football team went into this season with a motto of "no excuses."
The 2007 theme should be: "Prove it."
There is evidence that the 2007 season could be something special, but fans - as well as the players and coaches - will want to see better results in coach Mike Stoops' fourth season.
"We're on the right track. We're not there yet," tight end Brandyn McCall said. "It's never good enough, but it's a start. We're going to get there."
It's time.
The Wildcats lose only three seniors who started against Arizona State, two on offense. That offense needs to make serious gains after averaging a lowly 17 points and 253 total yards per game.
A new offensive coordinator will be calling the plays following the departure of Mike Canales. That coach will have to reconstruct a unit that never could balance the run with the pass, but the cupboard is hardly bare.
A healthy Willie Tuitama at quarterback is the key. Nine months off can only help the junior-to-be clear the cobwebs from a season in which he had three concussions and was knocked out of another game because of a blow to the head.
Here's how the rest of the pieces might fall into place:

Quarterback
Projected starter: Tuitama
Key backups: Tyler Lyon, Kris Heavner, incoming recruit Bryson Beirne
Key number: 9 - Hard to believe Tuitama actually started nine games. He finished four.
Analysis: Tuitama clearly makes the UA offense more formidable when he is healthy. His health is the No. 1 priority in the offseason. Lyon has the physical tools to be a successful Pac-10 quarterback. He'll get plenty of reps this spring because he must be a reliable backup in 2007.

Running backs
Projected starters: Chris Henry, Earl Mitchell
Key backups: Chris Jennings, Xavier Smith, Glyndon Bolasky, incoming recruit Joseph Reese
Key number: 2.7 - yards per carry average this season by the backs.
Analysis: The backs held onto the ball this season after fumbling problems in 2005, but Henry must show the running style he did against Oregon: punishing, fast, instinctual. He can't revert to the backpedaling, timid style he showed in other parts of the season. UA needs a speedy back who can get to the outside and take it the distance.
If Reese picks up the offense quickly in August, look out. Mitchell has to be used more than just as a blocker. Throw him the ball. Let him run.

Wide receivers
Projected starters: Mike Thomas, Anthony Johnson
Key backups: Delashaun Dean, Terrell Turner, Terrell Reese
Key number: 1- The heralded freshman receiver class of Dean, Turner and Reese combined for a single reception this season.
Departing: Syndric Steptoe
Analysis: Thomas must become more of a big-play receiver again. He had 50 catches this year but needs more than just two touchdowns. Reese and Turner saw little playing time. They must adjust to the speed of the game. If the Wildcats want to spread the field more next season, the offense will only work if these players live up to their four-star recruiting rankings.

Tight ends
Projected starters: Brandyn McCall
Key backup: Travis Bell
Key number: 0 - Brad Wood led the team with six touchdowns in 2005. No UA tight end found the end zone in 2006.
Departing: Wood
Analysis: The Pac-10 is full of tight ends who are game-changers. The Wildcats need to find a player who can block and pass catch effectively. Mitchell would make one heck of a tight end, wouldn't he? UA could score big here if it is able to sign Rob Gronkowski, the nation's No. 3-rated tight end. Gronkowski, from Pittsburgh, is strongly considering the Cats.

Offensive line
Projected starters: LT Peter Graniello, LG Daniel Borg, C Blake Kerley, LG Joe Longacre, LT Eben Britton
Key backups: G James Tretheway, G/T Adam Grant, G Bill Wacholz
Key number: 3 - Three redshirt freshmen started along the line most of the season.
Departing: G Adam Hawes
Analysis: Hawes isn't a huge loss because the youngsters usually played with more authority than the veteran Wildcats. The growing pains were great early on, but Britton, Kerley and Borg appear to be the real deals.
Graniello must regain the form he had in his first two seasons. Stoops has raved at times about the potential of Grant, who missed 2006 because of a knee injury, and Tretheway, who redshirted after transferring from junior college.

Place-kicking
Projected starter: Alex Zendejas
Key backup: Jason Bondzio
Key number: 75 percent - Nick Folk's accuracy on field goals (15 of 20 this season) will be missed, as will his ability to hit from long distance.
Analysis: Bondzio, who will be a junior, will get plenty of time in the spring to prove he can do the job.
But never underestimate a Zendejas. Alex, the nephew of former UA kicking star Max Zendejas, will arrive in the fall as a freshman.

I'd love to see us sign this kid... Come on, we need a hometown discount! In all honesty though, it's gonna come down to SC and UA.

"I've already seen all these schools (Tennessee, USC, UCLA and Arizona) on my own, either at camps or traveling with my parents," said Arizona center Kris O'Dowd. "I plan on deciding within two weeks after I return from my Arizona visit. My parents don't have a preference, but like I said, distance is a factor..."

Scout.com's No. 1 ranked center and five-star player Kristofer O'Dowd (6-4, 312, 5.0), from Tucson Salpointe Catholic (Ariz.), now favors Arizona, USC, UCLA and Tennessee. All have offered.
"Tennessee's official visit was September 16," O'Dowd said. "Coach Greg Adkins (offensive line) says that I could play early. During my visit I took in all the surroundings and listened to what everyone had to say about the programs and school. I loved that their coaches don't cut corners. They tell you how it is. They are good old-fashioned southern boys. I have to really think about it. The distance is a factor, so I couldn't attend Tennessee with ease.
"I visited USC November 25. Coach Lane Kiffin (offensive coordinator) says that the Trojans center is leaving this year. If I can come in and learn the program I'll be able to play early. I'm pretty confident that I can learn the program. I'm confident in my ability to beat out other players, if I had to do that. I have an excellent trainer and training program. My trainer has trained both college and NFL players. I train five days a week religiously.
"I have four schools that I favor and I favor them all equally. I do not have a leader at this point and the rumors that I'll be attending USC or have silently committed to USC are false," he said. "I have not made any verbal commitment or have spoken to any coaches at USC regarding a commitment..
"I visit Arizona December 8. Coach Eric Wilford (offensive line) would love for me to play with the Wildcats. So would a lot of other people. Why shouldn't they? I'm from Arizona. There are rumors that I will attend Arizona too. I can't make it any more clear that I have not made a decision. I'm not letting anyone pressure me into a decision. I don't have a leader and I could really attend any one of these schools. I'm seriously looking at all the school programs and it will come down to which school will best fit me.
"All the coaches are recruiting me hard," O'Dowd said. "I talk to all of them once a week and receive several text messages from them. Besides looking at the school programs, I'm also thinking about the distance. Being close to home is somewhat of a factor, but not the only one. Playing early is a factor as well. I feel that I am ready to play and have trained hard so that I can play early.
"I'll be visiting UCLA this weekend (December 1). Coach Dino Babers (running backs/recruiting coordinator) says that their center is leaving too. He wants me to step in and see if I can pick up their program. I think I can.
"I've already seen all these schools on my own, either at camps or traveling with my parents. I plan on deciding within two weeks after I return from my Arizona visit. My parents don't have a preference, but like I said, distance is a factor." Final senior stats: 90 pancake blocks O'Dowd reports a 3.1 core GPA and 1410 SAT score.

Nothing official, but signs point to Dykes

Although the Wildcats cannot announce a new offensive coordinator until next week, all indication are the team has found their man.

Texas Tech co-Offensive Coordinator Sonny Dykes spent his second straight day in Tucson speaking with Mike Stoops and other representatives of the University. Nothing official has been said, but it would be a surprise if Dykes is not named as the replacement for Mike Canales.
“I think so,” Dykes said when asked by KMSB Channel 11 if things were going well. “I think we’re getting everything ironed out.”
Neither the school nor Dykes can officially comment on the job until it has been posted for a full week. That would be on Wednesday, but reading between the lines it sounds like the Wildcats may have their guy.
“I feel really excited about this opportunity and think it can be a really, really great place,” Dykes said. “I have a lot of confidence in Coach Stoops and his staff. It would be a great honor to work with these guys.”
Dykes came to Tucson on Thursday and spent the better part of two days in meetings and touring the campus and community. He specifically mentioned the weather and the facilities when asked about his trip so far.
“It’s a great place to live,” Dykes said.
Dykes has plenty of ties to Tucson and the staff. He currently coaches under Mike Leach who was an assistant with Stoops at Oklahoma. He coached against the Stoops defenses when the Wildcat head coach was still with the Sooners. His brother Rick was an assistant for the Wildcats under John Mackovic. No word on what kind of offense Dykes would like to implement, but one would have to assume he would try to bring in some elements of the spread offense that Texas Tech runs.

Don't mean to be a dick but you might want to be careful posting these articles. If I'm not mistaken they look like Scout.com (respective college Scout site) insider articles. If thats the case, ASFN might get in trouble.

Once again, I come in peace and just wanted to give you the heads I up. I may be wrong though.....

Dykes expected to lead Wildcats' offense
Announcement could come Friday

By Ryan Finley
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.07.2006

Texas Tech assistant Sonny Dykes has cleaned out his office and left the Red Raiders' football program.

Now, it appears to be just a matter of time before Dykes, 37, is named Arizona's next offensive coordinator.

UA coach Mike Stoops will likely introduce Dykes to the media during a Friday news conference in McKale Center.

Stoops chose not to make the hire official Wednesday, the first day a move could be announced in accordance with state law. Stoops will not speak to the media until the press conference, billed as an end-of-the-year recap.

Stoops and Dykes were both out of town Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

"Nothing until Friday," UA spokesman Matt Rector said. "If we have something to report, we'll do it then."

Still, all signs point to Dykes becoming the Cats' next coordinator. Texas Tech coach Mike Leach told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that Dykes will be a good fit for the UA job.

"I think Mike Stoops has offered him a great opportunity there," Leach told the paper Friday. "I think he'd be foolish not to take it."

Texas Tech spokesman Chris Cook confirmed that Dykes is no longer on the Red Raiders' staff. He visited the team's Tuesday practice in street clothes but did not coach.

"We can't confirm what he's doing or where he's going," Cook said. "But he's no longer on staff here. He has cleaned out his office."

Dykes was identified as a prime candidate as soon as Mike Canales resigned Nov.27 after the Wildcats' 28-14 loss to Arizona State.

Dykes interviewed with Stoops late last week and was spotted on the UA campus this week.

Dykes is familiar with both Stoops and the UA program. He and Stoops coached against each other as Big 12 Conference assistants from 2000 to 2003.

Dykes' brother, Rick, was Arizona's offensive coordinator in 2001 and 2002 under John Mackovic. Dykes' father, Spike, was Texas Tech's head coach for 13 years and remains the school's all-time wins leader.

Dykes named UA offensive coordinator
JOHN MOREDICH
Tucson Citizen

The University of Arizona football team officially named Sonny Dykes as its offensive coordinator today.

Dykes, formerly the co-offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach at Texas Tech, is expected to bring the high-octane passing attack with him to the Wildcats.

"Sonny brings some fresh ideas and new enthusiasm to our program and to our offense," UA coach Mike Stoops said in a release. "He has a great background with this family and working with (Texas Tech coach) Mike Leach. His work brings a lot of credibility to our attack."

Dykes' offense with the Red Raiders was third nationally in passing, averaging 363 yards per game.

Dykes is expected to coach quarterbacks as well.

This is a great hire. The anemic offense will be no more. With the Cats returning almost all their starters on both sides of the ball, next year's team will be a lot of fun to watch. Welcome about coach Dykes. Another plus is he is a great recruiter and has very good connections in Texas.

I have my fingers crossed that Tui can play next season, for his sake. Hopefully, Cason will stay, but if not, DB is one of our deepest positions. I think Antoine would definitely help his draft position by staying.

Concussion specialists will examine Cats QB Tuitama
By Ryan Finley
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.09.2006

UA quarterback Willie Tuitama will visit concussion experts in Pittsburgh next week with hopes of being cleared to continue his career.

Tuitama, a 19-year-old sophomore, has suffered three concussions since Sept. 9. He has been inactive since Arizona State's Kyle Caldwell delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit in Arizona's 28-14 loss to the Sun Devils on Nov. 25.

The daylong examination will be held at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Center for Sports Medicine. UPMC's Sports Concussion Program works with the NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball, Champ Car and the IRL to help prevent, treat and analyze concussions.

Tuitama will head east after finishing his final exams and before going home to Stockton, Calif., for the holidays.

"We want to make sure that he's looked at by the best there is out there and see what we're dealing with," UA coach Mike Stoops said Friday. "We haven't had him do anything physically since the season."

Arizona's team doctor, Don Porter, exchanged e-mail with UPMC about Tuitama's case as the quarterback battled post-concussion syndrome during the season.

Tuitama suffered concussions on Sept. 9 and Oct. 7, but returned to play at Washington State on Nov. 4.

Tuitama's return lasted two weeks — he was pulled from the UA game against Oregon on Nov. 18 after complaining of blurred vision. He was removed from the ASU game in the second quarter after absorbing Caldwell's hit.

Cason could leave for NFL

Cornerback Antoine Cason has filed paperwork with the NFL and is considering leaving school a year early, Stoops said.

Stoops said Friday that Cason has not heard back from the league. He said Cason likely would be taken within the first three rounds but could improve his standing with a solid senior season.

Cason had 62 tackles and three interceptions — including one for a touchdown against Cal — during his junior season.

"With Antoine, as great as he is, I think he can always play better and position himself better," Stoops said. "I want to position him so he's a first-rounder or second-rounder."

Cason, who last month called the NFL "the opportunity of a lifetime," will consult with his family before making a decision. Cason's father, Wendell, played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1984-87.

Stoops said defensive end Louis Holmes and linebacker Spencer Larsen, both juniors, are expected to return in 2007.

From what I have heard Tui will be allowed to play. They are just making sure. Tui has gone on to say he can't wait until next year. He actually wanted to play in the 2nd half against ASU. The offensive line should be much better next year. This is going to be the deepest Cat team in a long time.

Great news!

Experts clear Arizona QB to play again
Tuitama battled first concussion all season
By Ryan Finley
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.16.2006

Willie Tuitama has been cleared to practice and play next year after specialists concluded he suffered one severe concussion — and a season's worth of aftereffects — during the fall.

Doctors in the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Sports Concussion Program said Arizona's sophomore quarterback never fully recovered from a concussion suffered Sept. 9 in Baton Rouge, La.

"They said that by the start of next (season), I should have nothing to worry about," an elated Tuitama said Friday from his parents' home in Stockton, Calif. "I'm real happy. My parents are relieved."

Tuitama's future had been in doubt since Arizona State's Kyle Caldwell knocked him from the Wildcats' 28-14 loss to the Sun Devils on Nov. 25. Team doctors said Tuitama suffered a concussion on the hit, giving him three for the season, by their count.

But the complex nature of concussions — head injuries range from slight to severe and are often hard to categorize — encouraged the UA to seek out the nation's top experts.

Tuitama spent Thursday at the University of Pittsburgh with coach Mike Stoops and Randy Cohen, the UA's assistant athletic director for medical services. Tuitama received a full battery of neuropsychological tests and underwent an MRI exam from a nearby hospital.

The results, presented to Tuitama on Thursday night, showed that he likely never fully recovered from his first concussion, which occurred when he took a helmet-to-helmet hit in the Cats' Week 2 loss to LSU. The long-term damage would have been far worse had he suffered three separate episodes during the season.

"A kid can't have that many concussions at one time," Tuitama's father, Lui, said. "They said he only had one — he just never fully recovered from it."

Arizona was justifiably cautious with each hit. Tuitama was removed from the Wildcats' Oct. 7 game at UCLA, their Nov. 18 game at Oregon and their season finale against Arizona State after suffering grisly sacks.

The Pittsburgh doctors said Arizona did the right thing by holding the quarterback out following each blow. That news was comforting for Tuitama, who was often frustrated by the doctors' decisions to hold him out.

"I always want to play every game," he said. "That part was tough."

Doctors at UPMC's Sports Concussion Program are widely considered to be the nation's best. The program works with the NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball, Champ Car and the IRL to help prevent, treat and analyze concussions. The program, established in 2000, helped popularize the ImPACT testing system that many schools — including the UA — use.

Tuitama said he is looking forward to rejoining his team when school resumes in January. He did not want to think about what would have happened had the tests come back differently.

"I would have done everything in my power to play again," he said. "Now, I'm going to relax for a little while. But when I get back home to Tucson, it'll be time to go to work."

Extra points

● Any rumors connecting Mike Stoops and the University of Alabama are just that.

Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood said Friday that Alabama has not asked permission to speak with Stoops regarding its vacancy.

"I know (Alabama athletic director) Mal Moore really well," Livengood said. "There's nothing to this."

Stoops, who is 12-22 in three seasons at Arizona, has been mentioned by Tuscaloosa, Ala., media as a possible candidate for the Crimson Tide's vacancy. Alabama is replacing Mike Shula, who was fired Nov. 27 after posting a 6-6 season.

Moore has struggled to find a taker for the Tide's vacancy in recent weeks. West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez and the Miami Dolphins' Nick Saban both turned down Alabama's overtures to remain in their respective jobs.

Stoops has seen his stock rise after leading the UA to a 6-6 record in his third season. He was linked to the vacant University of Miami job last week, but the job went to Hurricanes defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.

● Arizona pulled a recruiting coup of its own, a day after losing Salpointe Catholic star Kris O'Dowd to USC. Lavar Brown, a 6-foot-3-inch, 240-pound defensive end from Rosenberg, Texas, verbally committed to the UA hours after O'Dowd's decision.

Rivals.com lists Brown, from Lamar Consolidated High School, as the nation's No. 17 weak-side end. Brown's verbal vow gives the Wildcats 10 commitments heading into next season. The UA is expected to add another 10 players by signing day Feb. 7.

I was shocked by this. I didn't think there would be any doctor who would clear him to play after last season.

Henry isn't a player known for making the best decisions. He has the physical tools that scouts will love with speed, strength, and agility. He just isn't a runningback.

He said that lack of playing time at the beginning of the year was his reason for leaving. Henry had some great games for UofA during the end of the year, but he will not make it in the NFL. There is no doubt in my mind that he will not get drafted and will be lucky to make it to the practice squad on one of the 32 teams. Personally, I never took a liking to the guy. He seemed more like the type of person who is out for personal gain and not what is best for the team; but that is just my impression.

Doesn't the UofA have some stud RB coming in next season, so the loss of Henry might not be that bad?
