Unless he plays like Kurt Warner this year he will be released and either way he might be released to try and work a new deal because the price tag is so high

It is not "that high" he would be paid below the top 10 QBs in the NFL. Unless you are saying the Cardinals are a cheap organization and won't pay him even if the cost is reasonable.

He doesn't have to play like Warner to justify his salary.

I haven't read the whole thread so maybe the answer is buried here somewhere, but could someone please tell me why the Chargers want to get rid of him in the first place?

If he's all that, why is he on the trade block? Why not get rid of Volek instead??

They tendered the RFA a 3rd round tender. So he is free to negotiate with other teams to sign a deal. San Diego can choose to match a deal Whitehurst accepts from another team, or get compted a 3rd round DP.

I don't think that ESPN article has any effect on Whitehurst. It was all speculation and showed no indication at all. That was more about getting Clemons.

The Chargers still have alot of say in this. Obviously, they want CW to sign with the Cardinals because it gives them a better draft pick. They could steer him that way by saying they'd match Seattle's offer and not the Cards, thus forcing his hand because I'm sure he wants out of SD since there is almost zero chance of playing time.

This is part guess/part logic:

Even when he was back in Tennessee, Volek was considered the best "off the radar screen" backup in pro football. No reason for SD to feel differently now.

I'm guessing that Whitehurst's contract is about to come up and he's not thrilled at being "road-blocked" by the presence Rivers and Volek - and prevented from earning #1 or #2 money.

There are a number of things for the Chargers to consider: (1) By RFA'ing Whitehurst for a 3rd rounder, they're only obligated to pay him RFA3 money unless another team offers him more and (2) should another team offer him more money, SD would then have the option of (3) matching the offer (i.e. having to pay the higher money) or (4) letting Charley go in exchange for a 3rd round pick.

There's also the moral angle (if anyone really believes that) - i.e. that the Chargers like Charley and feel they owe him the right to go elsewhere and do what's best for his family.

My point - There are plenty of plausible reasons why the Chargers might be obliged to let Whitehurst go even though they like him.

Sometimes the pressures of the so-called "free market system" force change.

seattle just traded for this guy

they are trading the #40 this year for SDs #68 and giving up their 2011 3rd rounder to SD ....... pretty steep price

Thank you, MO, for taking Whitehurst and for paying the price. You have, IMO, traded back in the 2nd this year and traded away next year's 3rd for a complete scrub. So, again, thank you :)

i think the kid has potential, but I definitely have some concerns (such as he's really not that much of a kid........)

i don't know - the debate on the seahawks board for the past week pretty much mirrored the debates here

i think the only thing us hawks fan can agree on is that there is some aggressive rebuilding going on and a definite change in direction

now if it's a change forward or lateral or a different path downward remains to be seen

its very hard to pay big $$$ & realtively high picks for unproven "potential". Good luck, hope he sucks:D for our sake.

Anybody see this guy play last night? He was absolutely HORRIBLE!

He doesn't have a very accurate arm and he lacks any kind of decision making ability. His best attribute is that he can hand the ball off cleanly most of the time.

Very glad we didn't give up anything to get this guy.

I second that. Makes D. Anderson look like Warner.

yeah - funny this thread didn't get bumped after the titans game when he looked excellent

definitely got rattled against the pack and made a couple poor decisions with the ball

he's still learning and I'm more comfortable with him as a backup than seneca

Well I honestly didn't see the Titans/Seahawks game...but I did see this game, he looked bad, very bad...maybe not much worse than Anderson but at the same time we didn't give up a couple of picks for Anderson.

he started off alright .... just got rattled a little

still tends to lock onto receivers and needs a lot of work on the little things - decision making stuff

throws a nice ball though and can effectively make all the throws ...... needs to work on the game recognition stuff - which isn't a guarantee to improve

Hes looked better then leinart so far but hey i wont go there

In what world is 2 INTs and under 50% passing better than we've seen from Leinart? Going against 2's no less.

Only in the world that is occupied by Leinart haters.

14/22 - 214 yards - 2 TD/1 Int

sure there was an Int - but he did manage to make a completion more than 8 yards and convert a couple 3rd downs..............

Im still waiting for leinart to show me he can get into the endzone, you can be on his jock if you want but he hasnt looked good in camp or in the two games and i dont think anyone would disagree there.

I am not on his "jock" I am just not someone who has pure unadulterated hatred of the guy--like you.

I've said several times if he fails its on him, he will have nobody to blame but himself. To flat out write the guy off at this point is ridiculous, the guy deserves a fair shot to succeed.

Somers & Urban have both said he has looked good in camp....they've been there everyday I think. Both have said he has been inconsistent for sure but neither has written him off as a lost cause like many around here want to.
