Moderators,

Can this be "stickyed", please? There will be dozens and dozens of questions over the next few months as to how much cap space is left.

This is very similar to what Alan used to do, and that merited a link on the front page.

Thanks Joe. I apreciate the work you put into this.

And good lord look at some of the players taking up nothing but space on our roster and salary cap!

Anthony Clement T $3,000,000

Ray Thompson LB $2,656,250

Wendell Bryant DT $1,555,000

James Hodgins FB $1,250,000

That's over 7 mil! :barf:

I'd just like to take a moment and re-iterate what a fabulous re-signing this was by personnell guru Rod Graves. :thumbdown

Just take a look at the guys we are rumored to be shopping around, Thompson, Shelton, Clement, Bryant, and Starks. All are in the top 11 highest salaries.

Coincidence I think not.

I think green sees a lot of guys he likes in FA this year and in the draft, hence we need more money for draft picks and FA's, plus not to mention none but Shelton even come close to deserving their salaries.

This is what L.J. Shelton received in 2003.

2003
Name Base Bonus Other Total Salary Cap Value
Shelton, LJ $ 4,337,778 $ 5,000,000 $ 400 $ 9,338,178 $ 3,993,733

2002
Shelton, LJ $ 490,000 $ 0 $ 720 $ 490,720 $ 1,090,720

I might be wrong but he split his signing bonus in 2003 and his base was that large due to him signing his extension the day before the cut off in 2003. So if we let him go it would be a wash. we would not take a cap hit at all. so you would need to add back the 3 million to the total to reflect a total of around 18.3 mil.

Ah, another triumph. Has Marcel Shipp scored a touchdown since he got that contract extension? He's the 10th highest paid player on the team!

2006 2.4 mil 600k gain of 1.2 mil

R. Thompson LB 2005 2 mil 656k
2006 2 mil 656k
2007 2 mil 656k gain of 32 k

D Starks CB 2005 3.6 mil 1 mil
2006 3.6 mil 1 mil gain of 1.6 mil

You may be correct but there are a lot of incentives and roster bonuses from some of the players that I failed to look up, actually the 6 mill in dead space was actually being generous in our favor when I came up with that number, now without adding Sheltons bonus into it the 6 mill is no even more correct.

Does that make sense?

Thats not necessarly his fault. Injuries and the arrival of Emmitt Smith doomed him for the past 2 yrs.

Why is Johnson making so much less than Pace? Surely Johnson's hit more incentives, as well as being the higher pick, right? Does it have something to do with a two-tiered signing bonus, or something?

I also want to know what is the bonuses that we get for being under the cap. I read it some where it was 2.5 mil and another bonus of 12.5.
I think is was ESPN that stated that the real cap will hit around 100M for some teams.

That's not so bad, we take the hit when we have cap space, and will have more for the future when it comes off...spend away Graves...wisely...

shopping some of our high priced players, or cutting them in the next year or two, none of which have a truly monster contract I think, will help us sign more guys or extend others by giving us more space, albeit with some dead cap space.

It's better to have the cap situation like this, and make personnel moves based on football and attitude issues rather than cutting or not re-signing guys we want to keep. :)

I believe he has a a few incentives which arent all that much but the biggest part is I believe he has a roster bonuses the last 2 years of his contract, Pace does not.

Not sure how it works but what they are talking about is the cap plus cash paid out to FA's or something like. Cant find the article again, but that is the gist of it. The cap is set at 85.5 period. But teams will be paying more then that for players becuase they pay all of the signing bonuses right away but the NFL only counts it over the life of the contract.

Good Job! I did this many years ago and gave my stuff to Alan when I ran out of time trying to maintain it. It's always hard to figure the tricky contracts.

You should probably edit your post to remove the "rumored" salary cap as it's now official at $85.5M for 2005. If you mean the rumored cap space for 2006, you should estimate around $90M.

The rookie pool will probably be about $5M for the Cards, but just leave it at your current $4M as the rookies signed in rounds 4-7 end up not being in the top 51 saving about $1M. If any make the team, they displace a higher paid player and usually save money against the cap, so $4M for rookies is correct.

So, looking at this sheet and depending on the details of Shelton's contract, after the Cards set aside the rookie pool, they will have between $15M $18M to use on FAs this year. That's a lot of change.

Card_Czar : There are no bonus to the cap. It's set by the NFL this year at $85.5M. Some teams use the "Philly loophole" where they get credit for "likely to be made incentives" for the previous year, that actually were not made. I do not think the Cards have tried to actually use that loophole so they would not have any extra cash towards the cap.

The USAToday has an article today that says the cards total cap space is 19.26 - (4.0 for rookies) = $15.26M to spend.

That's right about where we are figuring. Good.

------
3/2/05:

According to a league-wide salary cap report obtained by USA TODAY, the Cardinals can back up an aggressive approach with $19.26 million in cap room as of Friday. The Minnesota Vikings, in the midst of a sale, had an NFL-high $32.2 million available, followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars with $19.3 million.

Where does the $6M in dead money come from?

The only players with signing bonuses we cut from June 1 2004 until now is Kendall and Fisher and their cap hit was spread over last year as well as this year. Their combined cap hit number shouldn't be higher than $1.5M, so I just don't get it...

I think he said the dead money covered, players who were cut, bonuses some players made, and to help take up the unknown in Shelton's contract. While $6M is a little high, it's hard to find out all the exact details.

Thanks for the info Steve. I think also when you take back the 3 mil from Sheltons dead money you fall in line with USA Todays. Good work Joe and if you need me to help in any way in keeping this up let me know. Joe or Steve have any of you asked the Cardinals for there list of salary charts???

Incentives and roster bonuses that were reached in contracts as well.

Maybe I should change the label of that to Deadcap/Misc.
