Comcast recently doubled our speed at home, for free.

Right now from Megapath's speedtest site.

Download 121.17 mbps, upload 11.66 mbps.

At work our download speed is just over 5, so my upload at home is more than twice my download at work.

Cox did the same thing. I was normally at 60 and now at 115. Love the increase for free.

i havent run a test since cox supposedly doubled speeds. I had 30 mbps, they said i should get 60 now if I have a 3.0 modem. my modem might be 2.0.

90% of my stuff runs over wifi so it doesnt matter right? Because wifi only transmits 10/100?

No 121. I have no idea what I can do with it. 50 was fast enough. I guess I might be able to stream a 3D movie without any buffering on my tv now.

I will add, it's 121 wired, wireless standing right in front of the gateway it was like 78 I think, I was actually surprised at how big the dropoff was I assume it's a limitation of the wifi in my girlfriend's laptop.

I get it as part of a package but I admit I'm not totally convinced any of it is a good deal right now. Comcast has these stupid tier things if you want HD channels you have to be on one tier. If you want Pac 12 network another etc. They actually insist that if I drop, HBO, Showtime and Cinemax my bill will go UP, because I can no longer be in the bundled package and then I'll have to pay full price for the internet and the phone(which we have only as a backup).

Bundled phone/Internet and cable with all the channels and are bill is lower, go figure.

Paid $200 for the box and all I pay now is $3/month(taxes) for everything but foreign calls. I bought it like 2 years ago and was paying $30 or so a month for just the land line. I tested at about 27 mbps down and 8 up last night on cox. Same as usual. Might have to get a 3.0 modem.

I dont know but assume that is correct.

Yeah I googled the 10/100 thing but I'm not entirely sure I understand it either.

My wifi is substantially slower than 120 standing right in front of it but I think that's just a limitation of the wifi card in the laptop. Don't really know though when you're over 70mbps on wifi not much point complaining.

I have learned that it's now faster for me to download windows updates that will screw my computer up and have to be uninstalled and reinstalled twice before windows starts correctly !



Edit, I looked at work on a new laptop I'm setting up, it says the max speed for wifi on it is 78mbps, I think that's really close to what Lucy is getting at home on her laptop so pretty cool

Different types of Wifi provide different speeds. Theoretical speeds are also very different than what you can get in practice. The newest AC 5GHz standard can theoretically deliver 1300Mbps but nobody ever gets close to that much.

my 5ghz seems to get out performed by the 2.4 ghz. The bars are always lower.

Cox doubled my speed as well getting about 100mbps. Actually it really helped me. I have a ton of devices, phones, audio receivers, DVR's, TVs, PCs, Blu Ray players and the list goes on all connecting to the internet. My kids love to watch Hulu or Netflix as well and often stream at the same time.

Before if one of them was streaming and the playing games we noticed some slow down here and there. It wasn't my Wifi (some devices connected wireless) because I have the new AC Standard which is faster than my internet speed. So, basically my network demands must have been exceeding 50mbps speeds.

All is good now. We even tried streaming 2 movies at once and playing games...zero slow down. It's awesome. The market is responding to the threat of Google trying to eventually expand and dominate the market. All good for us considering some of the ridiculous speeds people get in other countries.

I just hooked up my ooma this weekend. I was wondering how much my taxes would be, $3 sounds awesome. I love it so far. We changed our number in the process and haven't yet received a single telemarketer call!

Can't believe you went with crap Directv. Their setup from their guide to their remote is so crappy. I have the hopper and can record anything with that thing. Never figured why you or our parents went with Directv.

I can't wait till Cox(or even google) brings in 1 gb speeds to PHX area. Will be all over that when its available in my area.

now the other side of it. At work we're moving in a few months, our leading building right now is in the same city I live in, Sunnyvale. It's 2 less than 5 minutes from my house. I have 121 MB, AT&T is telling me the fastest guaranteed DSL they can promise us there is 768KB or LESS than 1 MB! It's almost 14,000 feet from the CO.

Sonicnet says they can get us 2-4 MB, they use ADSL2 so 2 pairs of bonded lines doubles the speed, they said AT&T would actually be between 1 and 2 they just tell us 768 because they have to guarantee a speed so they guarantee slow.

Comcast said they did a site survey there a year ago and it came back not economically viable for them to install Comcast there. A company about 2 blocks down told us they had Comcast so I've asked Comcast to reconsider.

Megapath says they can give us Business cable, 16MB for $125 a month, 50 for $175, but they can't guarantee it without a site survey and my suspicion is they'll come back with the same answer Comcast did but not sure. Megapath has HORRIBLE online reviews, Yelp and DSL reports nothing but bad reviews. They apparently bought out Covad and Speakeasy and have been slowly driving all their inherited customers to other companies.

the company down the street told me they switched from Comcast because they wanted more reliability and a shorter contract, they now pay $1300 a month for AT&T fiber ethernet and they get about 30MB. We currently pay $70 a month for AT&T DSL, it's supposed to be 6 we get between 4 and 5 most days.

I actually didn't realize there was anyplace left that had office buildings that far from the CO.

I have to giggle when I see people in other states talking about Google bringing those incredible speeds to them. Google is about 10 minutes from my office and they're doing that all over the country and Sunnyvale is on their list of cities but it's apparently focused on residential not business. I talked to someone at the City of Sunnyvale about it last week and they said the feedback they get from Google is precisely that, they're more interested in fiber to home for residential, not business.

That's pretty weird to be honest. I remember when I worked at EarthLink in 1999/2000 when DSL just came available. We were able to offer DSL at 1-2MB connections as far as 25000ft from the CO. I'm surprised that at least 15 years later, no upgrades to your lines have been done.

I am with Iceman. I know a bunch of ex-Dish folks who couldn't stand Dish and have been happy with DirecTV ever since the switch. I have never had any problems with my DirecTV. Even when I wasn't happy with the equipment I have gotten free upgrades. They have always taken care of us.

I am also perfectly happy with My Genie although I have heard great things about the hopper. My Genie has a ton of storage and I can record all I want. I also don't have to have full blown DVR in all of my other rooms any longer. It's been great.

Having said that.....which ever carrier is the first to offer the a la carte model in my area will get a customer for life. It's going to happen sooner or later. Both Dish, DirecTV and cable carriers having been ripping off the public for years with "packages". Just to get the stations I want I have to get a ton of stuff I will never watch.

Hopefully, that is someone like COX so I can bundle by internet and phone.
