That date hasn't mattered for years.
Ah yes... It used to matter in the mysterious compensatory pick formula, but now the cutoff for compensatory free agents is the 2nd Tuesday after the draft (May 8th this year).

He wasn't in Carolina last year...Chargers... however, when in Carolina, he was somewhat labeled a bust. SW must see something to work with, though.

I was answering a question as to what type of defense we will most likely be playing and was using Carolina as the example since that is where Wilks came from.

I think you’re thinking of the wrong Budda Baker.
ESPN credited him with 7 PD's while PFF had him at 3. Didn't hear much about him standing out in pass coverage as a rookie but I hope he becomes a CF type S who averages 4 INT's a year.

"That's a football player right there. ... He had two potential first-round corners on either side. His tape was probably better. Starting nickel or strong safety. The concern is his small frame and his ball skills." -- Mike Mayock

PFF:
Player comparison: Tyrann Mathieu, Arizona Cardinals

From a pure style standpoint, Baker looks a lot like Mathieu, who does his best work as a block-beating slot corner who dabbles at safety in base personnel. Baker can fill a similar role in the NFL.

Bottom line: Baker seems best fit in a role close to the line of scrimmage in nickel defenses when he can attack the LOS, but is more worrisome the farther he gets played back in coverage because his tackling in open space is poor. He works well when moving downhill as he closes quickly on the ball, making him effective as a short zone player or perhaps as a quarters safety, but his size can also be an issue if forced to match up with bigger slot receivers or tight ends when deployed close to the line of scrimmage.

I'm trying to read between the lines, but from what I get in this thread for the most part... He can't cover OR tackle well.

Whats the hold up? He'll fit right in.

What I get is the impression that a. Wilks-led defense will rely more on one "centerfielder" (& one thumper) at safety than on two deep assassins.

How can a UDFA be a bust? His career arc is similar to Jefferson who couldn't cover poo his first year or two, but was very good by year four.

Carolina loved him early on but soured on him after two lackluster seasons.

He's a 4th round draft pick.

I'm not calling him a bust...just what I read about him.

Somebody get Kenny Vaccaro on the phone :)

I think that how they are ignoring Vaccaro has to do with the type of safety they are looking for. Tre Boston is a rangy safety that is good in coverage from his deep lying position. Kenny Vaccaro is more of a hardhitting box safety. I think they have that in Budda Baker along with other traits they can utilize in different ways. I also think it might be the biggest reason why they released Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu is a good cover guy, but he is best when he plays close to the line of scrimmage, and if they don’t plan to utilize that type of player anyway, then it was a much better business decision to save his salary.

I think that which players they have acquired and reportingly are looking at now tells us something about what Al Holcomb’s defense is going to be.
