If you guys think ASU on CBS Sports Network at 8pm playing New Mexico State will be able to compete with any Big 12 school with 3x the budget playing on ESPN and Fox I don’t what to tell you.

Fortunately for you guys I’d bet that Crow gets dragged kicking and screaming into the Big12 since he’ll have no other options.
Regularly playing NMSU only makes @Ronin (I think it is Ronin) happy. I think it would suck.

There may not be room in the Big12 for ASU. Big12 controls their growth and whom they want, not ASU. Big12 apparently is very interested in UConn and I think Utah is a better program for Big12 to pursue than ASU. I said elsewhere that ASU needed to be proactive versus reactive and here they are…reacting.

That's a horrible analogy. It's laughable.
I guess you're right if you assume Oregon, Washington, and Stanford are still conference participants when in reality they have one or two feet out the door. It's either TCU, Kansas, Baylor, or Wazzu, Oregon State, and San Jose State.

Uh, you want to compare Arizona and ASU in hoops - one of two glamor sports? There’s no comparison. One school has an elite, and historically elite program, the other has squat.
We might need you to brush up on the meaning of the word "elite".

Only U of A fans think their program is elite - no idea how you can realistically compare U of A to Duke/North Carolina/Kentucky. If you think U of A is in the same universe as those teams, you're delusional.

Don't believe me? Here's a list that puts Arizona hoops in proper perspective:

If Lute stays at Iowa, UofA goes from a one coach wonder to a never was. Do we really need to go into how poor the post Lute era has been?

Btw, Portland is a bigger market than Eugene. Market doesn’t matter. Teams that place eyes on tv matter.
Dude - nobody watches Oregon State football outside of Corvallis, just like nobody cares about Washington St. outside of Pullman. That's why they're in the most precarious position.

There’s a major lack of fundamental economic and college athletic realities going on here. It’s really this for both Arizona schools:

1. the Big 12 and around $50M a year or:

2. a Pac-Mountain West bizarro hybrid conference that only broadcasts games on ESPN Ocho for $10M

The Big 10 and SEC ain’t walking through that door. The building is burning and through the BOR AZ has told ASU that they are walking out the fire escape. Up to y’all now or possibly end up with roadies in Laramie and Las Cruces every year.
Has anyone provided a true alternative to these options? This Pac as currently constructed appears cooked. The Big 12 isn't a very attractive option, but the lights are going on at the club, and pretty soon it'll be ending up with the Big 12 (who looks better with the lights off) or going home alone.

Survival is more important than the perfect fit at this point for both U of A and ASU. It seems that U of A leadership is at least a bit realistic here.

A couple guys here insist the Big10 would want ASU but that’s fantasy land.

You’re the only ASU fan on here who seemingly understands how detrimental ending up in the hybrid Pac-Mountain West would be to the university.

Five PAC-12 championships and four Elite 8’s after Lute btw. Basically every program in the conference would kill for that sort of production over a fifteen year stretch in both in hoops and football.

And yea I realize zero Final 4’s.

Yes - but not elite. My contention is with the delusion of "elite". It's the same hilarity of U of A grads acting like their degree is superior, when the top programs are on a comparable level and each school has their share of morons.

No U of A fan can be satisfied with the post-Lute era. It's a program that is marked by regular season success and spectacular postseason flameouts at this point.

Ha, we ain't USC/UCLA, and definitely less attractive than Washingon/Oregon/Stanford. It's time to be more realistic about the conferences we're trying to date, even if it is the dirty dingus Big 12.

I wonder how much truth there was to the Texas/Oklahoma joining back in the day, those were the days huh?

And still couldn't muster a win over Princeton in the first round last year. Sigh.

UofA has already found a way to be much more competitive in football than ASU from a dollars and cents perspective. UofA going to a more financially viable conference doesn’t help ASU at all. Can’t see how you can say this with any degree of confidence

Because the game is played on the field. U of A can jump conferences all it wants, its not going to make a difference on the field.

There won't be a $40M difference
The TV contract for the Big 12 is 31.7 million dollars per school. The TV contract for the MWC is 4 million per school. When everything is said and done we would be looking at least 30 million. That's almost 210 million over the life of the contract.

With the Big 12 adding more schools would the revenue per school decrease because of the dilution of adding more schools?

I think that the ESPN deal has a pro rata clause which means that the Big 12 gets more money if it expands (but only for P5 additions, as WiscoBird notes). Not sure about the Fox arrangement.

Some comments by Chris Karpman. The waiting game is a dangerous tactic.
