Wanted to give props to my school for defeating the 17th-ranked Auburn last night. Auburn committed five turnovers in the second half, but USF only managed to get a total of three points out of it (missed four field goals). Nevertheless, they tied the game late and won it in overtime. Very big win for a very young program.

Corso called this one and Herbstreit pretty much called him crazy. Corso does make some off the wall predictions but he was dead on with this one.

USF was like a 20 point dog

Great game to watch. Love the intensity and how these kids just played with such poise.

(missed four field goals).

Considering the field goal debacles I thought it was a mistake for USF to not try to win the game in regulation when they were on the 2 yard line. But hey, it worked out well for them.

Loved it. South Florida is a good team. Auburn was not over-rated, USF just may be that good.

USF's recruiting has gotten huge gains thanks in part to their investment in the state of the art athletic facilities

It helps when it is a state tax supported school. BTW, USF is the 2nd largest school(enrollment)in Florida.

U of Miami is private and is broke.

Hey RC, are you in the Pick 'em or not. BTW, I took the points and USF. Oh yeah. :koolaid:

No. Was away and missed the first week and now I'm two weeks behind so I don't think I can catch up. So I guess I'll have to wait for the bowl pick em.

It was obviously a conspiracy to have the pick em contest start after I went on vacation. Since I'm not entered, the winner will have a big * next to their name. Kinda like a golfer winning a tournament when Tiger Woods doesn't play. :)

Finally, an acceptable conspiracy theory.

The undervalued Big East.

Meh, it's an 8-team league with sucky talent at the bottom who, until this year, haven't scheduled, like, ANY out-of-conference tough matchups. This win definitely qualifies as tough, and is a big win for one of the lesser Big East teams. They're definitely a better conference this year, but still not a power conference.

Cincinnatti ( just whooped up on Oregon State )

which leaves Connecticut and Syracuse at the bottom.

That looks like a very good conference in spite of losing BC, Miami, VaTech.

SEC and Big 12 needs 12 teams to come up with as good a top 4. Big 10 can't with 10 teams. ACC looks like a mediocre conference this year. Pac 10 has more bottom feeders than Big East.

Okay, USF and Cincy have ONE game. One game does not a great program make. Yeah, they've shown some signs of being good. Top program? Not on your life. Northwestern rose from the depths and had a few good years. YEARS, not games. Sorry, those teams don't qualify. Pitt isn't that good yet either. That leaves you with West Virginia, Rutgers, and Louisville. I'll definitely give you West Virginia--they've showed the staying power as a top program. Rutgers is a Johnny-Come-Lately--let's see it for more than a cinderella season first. Louisville is a little more accomplished than Rutgers, but still...need to see it for a while longer.

The Big East has ONE team, count 'em, ONE team, that has proven long-term to be top program. The SEC has Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU as perennial top programs. They have down years, but more often than not they are big-time ranked teams. The Pac 10 has USC, Cal (kind of the same as WVU), Oregon, and Oregon State. I hate the Pac-10, but they do have four steady, solid programs. The Big Ten has Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan (this is a down year, no question), and Wisconsin (another WVU-type school). That's another 4 top teams. The Big 12 has Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma, and maybe even Texas Tech. That's 3 or 4 right there. Even the ACC has Florida State, Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech. Some of them are having rough seasons, but Miami and Florida State will bounce back, because they are top programs. The only program in the Big East to stack up to these thus far is WVU.

I will grant you that, this year, the Big East is much improved. Definitely better than the ACC, maybe as good as the Pac 10, and maybe as good as the Big 10. Will your lesser teams rise to the top and stay there? Maybe. Will they rise to the top for a short period of time, and then fade away again? Maybe. I'm not ready to name them a top conference, though. Talk to me at season's end.

Jeez. Tough crowd. A road win at Auburn by a team considered mid level in the conference. Two other teams in the top 10 - what more do you want?

I suspect he means tradition and not recent success.
Last years Big East post season was better than the Big 10's. Both Cincinnati and South Fl won their Bowl games last year.

I misrepresented my point in that sentence. I meant to say a power conference THIS YEAR, as in a good conference this year, but without the proven staying power. Until the Big East can do it year after year after year, color me unimpressed.

Yes, absolutely, the Big East outperformed the Big 10 in last year's bowl season. The Big 10 and the SEC still had the Championship game, and USC would have been in it if they had won their final conference game. Tell me, when was the last time that a team from this Big East (don't give me Va Tech--they're ACC now) was in a title game? Won the title?

You mean teams like Penn St? :)

Fans of teams that have been underachieving in recent times always play the tradition card. That's all they got.

And yet strangely, teams with tradition traditionally get new recruits, rebuild, and come back just as strong. Penn State, for example, had a few down years...then came back, challenged for a shot at the championship, and now are having a solid start to a season, and look to challenge for the Big 10 and possibly a shot at the title. Michigan is having a down year, a very bad year, but do you doubt they will be good again within two years?

What has Louisville done yet as a program to put them on level with Michigan, Florida, Penn State, and USC? Nothing yet. Nothing at all.
