I be extremely cautious in thinking I understood another country's political environment if I hadn't lived there for some time.

Also you might find out that your American view of "socialist" and foriegn views are significanly different. I've yet to meet somebody over here who came close.

Since you're in construction Arizona is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. My friend in real estate said the Phoenix in 10 years will be the size of LA now.

This is funny to me. Phoenix is ALSO brown and while it might not be run down, the air is dirtier and it gets hotter in the summer.

Phoenix has better employment opportunities. Tucson has that small town feel.

Housing is more expensive in Tucson.

Anywhere South of the UofA Campus!! :D

I also lived there for a few years, unles you live in the Northern, Eastern or Western foothills, you are basically in poverty. Around the campus is OK. Unfortunately, the air force base brings alot of dealers, drifters, hookers and strip clubs. Also miles and miles of cheap apartments or mobile homes. There are beautiful parts of Tucson but I would not want to go back. There is no freeway system and being so close to the border, mucho illegal aliens that can't make a decent living for themselves and their families. High crime rates when I was there, the house I was living in, which was an upscale neighborhood, got broken into 3 times in one year. My wife is hispanic so don't try and throw any race card at me. ;)

Jersey gets bum-rapped because of the industrial blight that lines the AMTRAK railroad line and the Jersey Turnpike. (To most people "just passing through", what they see is what they think Jersey is).

Lots of NJ isn't like that. There is still a lot of farmland in the western and southern part of the state and mountains in its northwestern corner. It is, however, the most densely populated state in the US and must fight sprawl at every opportunity.

Holmdel is strategically located - an hour southeast of NYC by rail or road and 45-minutes from quality ocean-beaches. Its natural terrain consists of wooded hills to the north and flat farmland to the south; much of which has now been covered with residential development on one or two acres. (Its geographical location is pretty unique, because part of NJ wraps around the southern tip of Manhattan before continuing south as the northern part of the Jersey Shore. When I climb the hill in front of my house, I can look north across Raritan Bay and see where the Twin Towers used to be - 5 miles away).

While I write this, 3 deer (with nice racks of antlers) just walked across the snowy wooded, hilly ravine behind my house.

Holmdel has been able to sustain large-lot zoning & keep taxes stable because we were "home town" to Bell Labs (now Lucent) and Prudential Property & Casualty. And it's been able to maintain kind of a campus-like overall "look", with considerable amount of undeveloped open space still remaining.

I moved to Holmdel in the early 1970's because - compared to other nearby communities (a) it hadn't totally been paved over by sprawl (b) it had a great school system (partly because it was filled with the offspring of Bell Labs scientists) and (c) it had been able to somehow retain its natural, semi-rural character.

Since then, I (and others who feel the same way) have fought development pressures to protect Holmdel from the kind of relentless march of homes, highways and malls that you see occurring around many cities, including Phoenix.

We haven't won every battle, but Holmdel is still a pretty neat place to live.

I love Australia - have you actually inquired about the job market there? I understand it's very difficult to emigrate there. Even my husband, who has offered a job in Australia, had a hard time getting a work visa, etc.

We could use more Cards fans in the state!

Tucson would be my pick over Phoenix. Phoenix is a sprawling mass of stucco homes that all look the same and people from out of state who complain about the state. There are perks here (Old Town Scottsdale, Mill Avenue) but it's way too flat and spread out for me. I'll take the rolling hills and mountain ranges of Tucson any day (looking to move there myself).

Southern Ariizona is wonderful. Sierra Vista, Patagonia, and Benson, or anywhere along the San Juan river. All those places are small and yet are less than an hour and 15 minutes from Tucson.

Phoenix is now just another LA. If I had to move here all over again, I'd buy a ranchette near Benson in the Dragoon mountains.

I here ya , I used the word Tucscum because of my years at ASU and yes I live near said name and there are many ASU grads that live here and use that refurance. It is a big city with small town views and big growing pains like Phoenix metro had in the early 80s,freewat system is non exsistant because people here don't want to pay for it,it takes me 45 mins to get to downtown and that is 13 miles away.
