I heard people bitching about that...no way...GREAT hit. Freaking crazy de-cleater from a little dude.

wasn't defenseless. Looked legit to me. And I hate giving SEA credit for anything

I agree. Not defenseless. Just jacked up. Tate's little dance after it is what should have been penalized. I don't think the push out of bounds should have been a flag either

I dont know if its a NFL penalty anymore, but wasn't that "spearing"

It looks like he dips his head right before impact and puts the crown of his helmet right under his chin

yes, it was a spear, technically.

It sure has been whenever Adrian Wilson has even come close to that. A crap call like that on Wilson cost us the Ravens game in 2007 along with a possible playoff spot.

it depends on using the front or top of the helmet

Butt Blocking is an act by an offensive or defensive player who initiates contact against an opponent who is not a runner with the front of his helmet.

Face Tackling is an act by a defensive player who initiates contact with a runner with the front of his helmet.

Spearing is an act by an offensive or defensive player who initiates contact against any opponent with the top of his helmet.

this case seems to be using "top" of helmet so it's spearing.

It was really close but I don't think it was spearing.

Definitely not head to head.

Spearing = leading with your head.

Wilson doesnt really lead with his head, he just punishes defenseless receivers.

I know its legal by the rules but I still think those hits are BS, cheap & going bye bye from this league shortly. I know it's a Cowpies player, but still unecessary...if it was Fitz & he misses the year with a broken neck this board would have a nuclear meltdown. It's dangerous & ended Kurt Warner's career regardless of what he says.

IMO if that's not the perfect example of a defenseless player, I don't know what is. I think those hits are banned in 2 years tops.

Top of helmet = spear, yes.

defenseless player you have a good argument for.

Defenseless is more of up in the air cannot protect themselves, this guy was full head of steam chasing a ball carrier. At most its a spear, without that its not a penalty.

Looked VERY similar to the hit Heap took last year in opur 2nd game of the year @ Seattle. Obviously, the Seahags look for that opportunity. That should be a 2 game suspension. There's no place for that in the NFL ANYMORE!

How is this different than the one Ward put on a player a few years back that, in part with Boldin's hit, lead to the defenseless receiver rule.
Eventually the defenseless receiver rule will be expanded to defenseless player. Like it or not player safety is going to impact a lot of rules in the coming years.

I think it's pretty clean. Brutal, yes. Dirty? Nope. Yeah, his head dips down, but it does look like it goes to the side and his shoulder hits about the same time. To me, spearing is using the top of the helmet like a battering ram. That was not the case in this play.

The Cowboy was pursuing the play, so it wasn't like it was a cheap shot away from the action.

I just don't see it as being dirty. I can only see the embedded angle on this computer, though.
