Right-handed reliever Oscar Villarreal is scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his shoulder today after straining it while pitching Sunday.
Head trainer Paul Lessard escorted the pitcher off the mound moments after Villarreal gave up a two-run home run to Dodgers rookie Jason Repko in the seventh inning.
Villarreal was making his second appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Tucson on Friday. An elbow injury slowed Villarreal in spring training.
"It just felt tight when I threw the last pitch," Villarreal said. "Unbelievable, huh? First my elbow and now this."
Oliver added
The team signed veteran left-hander Darren Oliver to a minor league contract.
Oliver, 34, is expected to report to Triple-A Tucson today, but will not join the Sidewinders' starting rotation until the team returns from a trip on Friday.
Oliver, who has an 87-79 record in 12 seasons, spent spring training with the Colorado Rockies.
"Obviously we need to look at getting a few more pitchers in (the organization) and giving ourselves some more options," manager Bob Melvin said. "We're looking for some insurance."
Short hops
Center fielder Jose Cruz Jr. was scratched from the lineup because of a sore back about an hour before the game.
Melvin inserted Quinton McCracken into the lineup, but moved McCracken from Cruz's sixth spot in the batting order to the eighth slot.
Cruz was available to pinch-hit but did not.
• Third baseman Troy Glaus has hit a home run in four consecutive games.
That ties a franchise record set by former outfielder Reggie Sanders who hit six home runs in a four-game span in 2001.
• Dodgers starter Derek Lowe left the game after being hit just above his right elbow by a line drive off Craig Counsell's bat in the fifth inning.
X-rays taken were negative, and Lowe is day to day.
Nevertheless, the soreness Lowe likely will feel probably will put a damper on his appearance in Boston today to accept his World Series ring.
The Dodgers have given the former Boston pitcher permission to travel to Fenway Park to celebrate last year's championship.
