HILLSDALE COUNTY — Vote now for the 2025 girls basketball reader’s choice player of the year. We have five nominees to vote for who helped lead their teams to successful seasons this winter. Only one player for each of the nominated programs was selected.

Readers can vote multiple times from now through Sunday, March 30 at 11:59 p.m. In addition to a reader’s choice winner, the Hillsdale Daily News will select their own choice winner after voting has closed. Accolades, stats, game results and leadership all play a factor in the player of the year honors.

Nominees​



Averil Miller – Camden-Frontier – Senior​


For four years, Miller has dedicated her winter every season to Camden-Frontier girls basketball, and her senior year saw the team transition again into a new era after playing for multiple different head coaches. She helped first-year coach Phil Freeman navigate the team to 11 wins overall in 2024-25. This included an appearance in the 2024 Pat Patterson Pool B championship game. The team won six league games this year and a playoff game win over Hillsdale Will Carleton Academy. The team captain averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. She also had two assists, two steals and a block per game. For her efforts, she was a Pat Patterson all-tournament selection and a first team all-league SCAA East honoree.

Darby Horsfall – Hillsdale Academy – Junior​

Junior Darby Horsfall stepped up into a major role for the Hillsdale Academy girls basketball team this season. The junior was the team leading scorer, playing in 19 games and helping the team to a 16-7 overall record. The team placed second in the SCAA East with a 12-2 overall record. Horsfall was named the season team MVP honoree, and the junior also brought home first team all-league honors and Pat Patterson Pool A all-tournament honors. The junior had 9.3 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists per game and 2.1 steals a game.

Alexis Trine – Jonesville – Senior​

The senior captain had a standout season in a career of standout moments. Her final year playing for Jonesville girls basketball saw her help the Comets repeat as district champions. The team ended the year with a 13-12 overall record, making an appearance in the regional semifinals of Division 3. The team won the district 85 title with a 55-46 win over Onsted. The senior scored 21 points and grabbed six boards and four steals in the title win. The senior had 11 points and eight rebounds in the regional semifinals against Blissfield (a close 39-34 loss). The 13-win season also included a fourth straight Pat Patterson Pool A title, where Trine earned her third Pool A MVP honor of her career. Trine averaged 13.44 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She earned Cascades second team all-conference honors. The senior had two 20-point games this season and multiple double-double games.

Ava Mallar – Pittsford – Senior​

The future Grand Valley State Laker put together one of the best seasons of her four-year varsity career during her senior season with the Pittsford girls basketball team. Mallar helped lead the team to a 22-0 undefeated regular season and the team’s fourth straight SCAA East championship. She helped lead the team in returning coach Chris Hodos’ first year back with the program, helping the Wildcats win a Pat Patterson Pool B title, earning MVP all-tourney honors. Her efforts leading the Wildcats to an undefeated regular season earned her third SCAA East MVP all-league honor. The team won a district semifinal game and competed for the district 120 title. They ended the season with a 23-1 overall record, their only loss coming to regional runner-up Reading. The 2023-2024 girls basketball player of the year and first-team all-state honoree averaged 18 points and 5.4 steals per game, shooting 41.3-percent from the field and 62-percent from the free throw line. She ended the season with 413 points, becoming a top three all-time scorer in program history. She finished second in steals. During the season, Mallar had multiple games with 20-plus points, including a non-conference regular season win against Reading where she scored 27 of the team’s 37 points.

Aubree Ervans – Reading – Senior​

In one of the best seasons in recent program history, senior captain Aubree Ervans led the Reading Rangers girls basketball team to the program’s first district title since 2013. The Spring Arbor University commit led the team to an appearance in the Pat Patterson Pool A title game, where she would end up earning her fourth all-tourney honor. The team finished with 15 wins, including district 120 title win over the then-undefeated top five ranked Pittsford Wildcats. In the 29-23 win, the senior had 14 points and three steals. She then had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists to help the team win a regional semifinal game, 44-20, over Mendon. The season came to an end in a regional title game against state semifinalist Concord. The senior had four 20-plus point games this season, including a career high of 31 points against Union City. The two-time all-state honorable mention honoree earned her fourth Big 8 first team all-league honor of her career. She finished with 1,200 career points, top five in school history. The senior averaged 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and two steals a game. She shot 44-percent from the floor and 83-percent from the free throw line. She had an in-game streak of 23 consecutive made free throws.
