I was watching the Replay of the Charger game and I was watching the D line real close.

Two guys really impressed me, Wakefield and King...

Wakefield is not my idea of a good DE, but every time they lined him up at the DT spot he was to big and tall for those guards to handle! I am not kidding, Wakefield got pressure everytime I saw him at the DT spot. Not to mention he is a good pass deflecter, at 6'7" he is gunna make it hard for the QB to pass over. I was very impressed.

(Is there a chance we could get a pass rush with Bryant and Wakefield at DT, and Pace at DE?) Maybe...

The other guy was King, he gets off the LOS twice as fast as anyone else. He is explosive and strong, he also uses his hands very well to gkeep the Linemen from getting his hands on him.

It may be early, but King looks to be our starting DT or maybe DE... Very nice to see a guy picked low work out for us!

It is worth a shot, but was he playing DT aginst 1st team? He is a pathetic, backup-type DE in my book. All he does is dance with the Tackle! Something has to change at that spot for this team to get any type of pass rush!

I pointed out a few days ago..I have always been down on fred - sort of the weak link on the dline...but...I noticed at training camp that he has bulked up alot. His arms are bigger than most of the dlineman - which is saying something for guy with very long arms. So...he is now strong enough - the issue now is speed. Maybe the dedication during the offseason will improve his play..

kenny king holds some sort of power lifting record at alabama..and I am surprised that he is as quick as he is. I think he fell in the draft due to the question mark on what position he would play (too short for a dend an too small overall for a tackle) - I am sure surewhere along the line there is a guy who was "too short" who has had success as a defensive end in the NFL..

Hugh Douglas...He is listed at 6'2, but he is probably only 6'1.

krang: has hugh douglas always been a defensive end? I was wondering about him - but the number on his jersey made me think he may have started his career at linebacker...not sure..

I am almost certain that he came out of college as a DE, number one pick for the Jets, wasn't he?

Not to answer for Krang but yes he's always been a DE (douglas) Dwight Freeney also was termed too short. Joe Klecko's son is also short for NFL D linemen standards, but he's giving every indication that he's a football player. I too like Kenny King, what he lacks in experience he's gonna make up for with tenacity & hustle

Think of both Wakefield and King as versatile rotation types who can play DT in passing situations and can anchor at LDE in run situations.

I see one as backing up the other and providing good depth overall.

Wakefield struggled at LDE last year - he got velcro'd to too many blocks and got trapped inside too often on sweeps and QB waggles to his side of the field. (Most often, it's his job to play contain on wide plays to his side, and he wasn't doing it).

I think he's less vulnerable when he has to play inside on passing downs and can anchor on running downs (so long as he's learned not to get sucked inside anymore).

You can't coach height.

Kenny King actually has a bunch of experience at Alabama...I think he started all 4 years at Alabama..but the kicker is that he at first was a dend and then was moved to nose tackle! Sounds outrageous..

I only count this as experience - because it gives him a big edge over like an alton moore..Alton Moore seems to have grown (from a tall skinny kid) to a prototype NFL defensive end..but..Alton went to a junior college (very inferior competition) ...and then auburn - but since he was a latecomer he has limited playing time at a division I program..

You can tell Kenny King has seen the field quite a bit against some decent competition (SEC)..not NFL experience..but he probably has lined up against quite a few guys who are playing or will be playing in the nfl.

Perhaps Wakefield has looked better due to the new system. Bryant and Bell look better too. Coach Mac said that Wakefield makes a good nickel tackle. Wakefield had a blocked field goal and an interception two years ago. If I remember correctly, one of them went in for a TD. Wakefield is a good special teamer.

I'm pretty sure he's always been playing DE.

BTW did you know that Hugh Douglas was the player the Jets selected with the 1st round pick the Cards gave up for Rob Moore
