Well he wouldn't be a third down back; He's more of a 1st and 2nd down back. He lacks top end speed, elusiveness, and receiving ability. He's a grinder, more in the Antwain Smith mold.

i think he's got more heart than antowain smith. he's the type of runner that you enjoy watching just because of his grit and determination. you WANT him to be faster, but he just isn't.

He doesnt have the moves, speed, vision, basicaly any of the top qualities in a back. He is a tweener between the fullback/hback and rb. He isnt a great blocker, but he isnt a great RB either. I wouldnt use any of our picks on him.

I don't have an inside scoop, just an opinion based on his 5 year career or non career as it could be called. Payton was a Butch Davis recruit and basically was a PR recruit. He had a minimal football background in high school. Soccer background mostly.

He frittered away his first 3 years with off field injuries. Scuba diving laceration to foot took away one year. Motorcycle accident blew another.Throw in an off campus auto accident. 2 years ago he started to get serious and worked his way up to # 3 RB. Last year he got to #1 by default. McGahee left, Gore was injured again, Gaethers was moved to WR, Freshman Moss wasn't ready.

He has very little style in his running game. Straight ahead, upright, with very little elusiveness. Doesn't cut back and fumbles. Average hands and speed. Other than that, he is great:D

Seriously, I can't imagine him playing in the NFL let alone being drafted. He is a nice guy, but I think most of his athletic genes came from his Mom. He is not Walter Payton. Heckuva nice kid and a nice story. It would be a minor m iracle for him to become an NFL back. His bowl game performance was an illusion.

It wasn't an illusion...but it also wasn't representative of his true ability. He had a very good game but he has shown little consistency at the college level. I agree with alot of your other thoughts on him.

I am guessing the Bears may throw a 7th rounder at him...or they will sign him as a UDFA...for obvious reasons. I stated on another thread that given Graves' past in the NFL, he may even chuck a 7th rounder at Payton. Most likely though, he will end up in Bears camp...where he had better become a top special teams guy if he wants to continue to pursue football.

It is possible some team will reach for him in the 7th round if he has a good workout at UM's pro day. He will never amount to anything more than a special teamer in the NFL. He did excel on kickoff coverage at UM. I remember him putting some pretty nasty hits on opposing players.

He'll have another chance when the Pro scouts make their annual Mecca to Hecht Athletic Center in Miami, when all of the draft eligible players put on a dog and pony show. It is a mini combine workout for U of M players. Quite a few Miami players have improved their stock at these events.

P.S. I agree. Illusion was a poor choice of words. How about un Payton like?
