Plot Summary: From director Steven Spielberg comes "War Horse," an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, "War Horse" begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets - British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter - before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse - an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. "War Horse" is one of the great stories of friendship and war - a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

2 - 2.5 stars. I LOVE horse stories, and went to see it at Cine Capri with 2 friends Christmas morning - first showing.

Brought a big wad of kleenex, and barely dampened even one.

Badly cast - from the horse, which had no real charisma, to the boy, who looked and acted like an actual mouth-breathing dimwit, to the French girl ("OK, now play a brainless, bossy, french bimbette - except you're twelve")-- the dad, the french grandad, the bad guys. There wasn't one single well-developed character (except the big black horse that was Joey's obviously doomed friend). Heck, when even a brilliant actress like Emily Watson looks and sounds dull yet shrill, it suddenly becomes clear:

-- it was badly written and badly directed! REALLY badly directed.

Animal sagas, horse and dog-based stories especially, have a natural rhythm that needs to unfold, to lure you in gently as the threat thrums beneath it, but Warhorse was all artifice and in your face every minute. GET IT? DID YOU GET THAT? DID YOU SEE HOW SNOTTY THAT KID IS? DID YOU GET HOW UGLY WAR IS? DID YOU SEE WHAT A FOOL DAD IS? DID YOU SEE HOW NOBLE JOEY IS? PEOPLE WHO LOVE HORSES ARE GOOD, DID YOU GET THAT??.

After reading some of the negative reviews I had very low expectations and I ended up enjoying the movie quite a lot. I suppose if you go in expecting greatness you will be disappointed. But it is fairly entertaining overall for a family-type adventure movie.

I saw the play in London. You are correct. Craptastic.
You start this post off so "Look at me, I'm Mr. Fancypants seeing a PLAY in LONDON." ...then you end it with the word "craptastic" and ruin the whole facade.

You totally mulli'd it.

there was just something so... OFF about this movie to me. Felt like the first hour was a film made in the 1940's-50's... stagy... boring... just... off.

I can agree with that. It did drag a little. But in the end I was entertained. I would recommend most wait till it hits video if they are interested. Cartinaly didnt have that "stephen Spielberg" feel to it.

Yeah, there's nothing worse than a horse that cant act..:p I heard he was a diva too, his demands on set were outrageous!
