I saw the others post that but it has nothing to do with what I'm saying.

What does him being out of the country have to do with him keeping it a secret until the official press conference? What purpose did it serve to keep it a secret until he got back in the country?

Even if it was spur of the moment and he decided on Friday morning couldn't the media be notified and a cameraman be in place a few hours later to catch audio and video of this big "secret" that everyone was pretty sure was going to happen anyway?

No, it was all self-serving and that's what I was hoping Warner wouldn't do.

Again, it was no secret. No one calls a press conference to say they are gonna keep playing.

And, yes, press conferences can be called in a short span of time, though this is usually not the case unless there is some sort of imminent crisis (ie plane crash). While Kurt retiring may cause crisis in a lot of us, it's not really the stuff that we-gotta-get-the-camera-crews-out-there news is made of.

Mokler buddy, as soon as the press conference was announced, everyone knew it was going to be to announce his retirement; so there was no "secret" being kept.

Anyone that seriously thought anything else was only deluding themselves...

It was a formality, in essense Warner's retirement was announced when the press conference was announced earlier in the week.

Yup. And the formality wasn't just for Kurt. It was for the Cards organization and the NFL. Some people can bow out quietly; future hall-of-famers cannot.

ok, now you just sound like a jilted lover. it's only football and he's just a human being.

I love ya ... and your brother. Just saying. :)

I think you guys are mixing ideas here. No one "knew" that he was gong to retire when the press conference was announced. To discuss his future plans was intentionally ambiguous and that's what annoys me.

I just wish he would have taken the road less traveled and not pandered to the media as his last act as a player. I can't possibly be the only one that was dangling in anticipation by this approach.

Which is why it annoys me. The only thing that I can see that was accomplished by doing things they way that they were done, was to torture those of us who really wanted to see him play out his contract.

If he hadn't taken the secretive approach his career would still be just as celebrated, his goodbye would have been just as covered, the thanks from the fans would still have happened.

What's that phrase from Shawshank Redemption? Having hope will kill you. That's what the last few days were like. We all assumed and feared retirement was the reason but leaving it open to interpretation...it was just cruel. I'm not saying it was intentional, but it was cruel.

Now. Let the Leinart/BSP debates begin!

OMG. Tell me honestly. You REALLY thought he was coming back? There was no secret here. Don't take it so personal. The guy is 38 years old. He has a life outside of football. He is an MVP and Super Bowl winner. He has accomplished more at this level than most people dream of.

YOU had hope. YOU took it personal. That's on YOU. Don't blame Kurt and the way he went out for the way that YOU feel.

Bye Warner.

NFC West Champs locked

Troll much? Damn dude, even on a day where we lose one of the guys who helped bring our team from obscurity after many years of fruitlessness you just couldn't resist trying to bring us down even further on our own board.

Not cool, just saying.

I don't consider Big Ben to really be elite either.

We agree though on the defense thing, we need that to majorly improve to have any chance now.

He certainly wasn't elite when they won their first Super Bowl with him as a rookie. He was a pretty big time passer last year and this year though.

Yes, we have to be quite serious about the defense. I think we won't fall off as far as some think on offense, but we often needed every point possible the last two years. I wonder if Kurt's decision will now get an offer on the table to Dansby that probably wasn't going to be made before?

I would put him up there. Not only are his # pretty damn good when he is passing but he has proven since his first year that when you need him to make a big play he does it.

Let's not also forget that up until this year, the Steelers were run first pass second. So, no matter how good you are it limits opportunity. The Steelers run game sucked for long stretches this season and now you see what Ben can do when relied on.

If Ben is not "elite" he is definitely on that next tier.
