Kurt's retirement is the lead story on every major sports website right now. Obviously, since it's regarded as an important event the way Warner and the Cardinals handled the news conference was HIGHLY appropriate.

In NO way, was this self-serving. That's my opinion.
Is this supposed to be ironic or just contradictory?

Just because it's covered extensively by the media doesn't mean it's self-serving. Hell, you could even see it as a selfless act; Warner made what is a likely a very personal decision public because WE wanted to know...not because he wanted to tell us.

Sorry dude.Let it go.
Doug, I'm glad to see you're back with us. Hope you're feeling well.

...but isn't this advice? I thought that was a no-no? ;)

Again, Hope you're on the road to a full recovery.

As annoying as when I was arguing in favor of Warner over McCown and Leinart?
While some hoped otherwise, we all understood what the announcement of a press conference meant. It wasn't "Cardinals holding press conference"; it was, "Warner holding press conference, expected to announce retirement."

In that case (your quoted post) you were proven to be correct. In this case there is no proof to be forthcoming, because there is nothing to be proven, one way or the other.

Warner's career has taught me something, over and over and over.

No matter what you do, and no matter how you go about doing it, somebody somewhere will think you did it wrong.

everywhere/all last week.

The Cardinals (and Kurt Warner) have finally made it official — the press conference will be at 1 p.m. Arizona time Friday here at the team’s Tempe facility. The release says it’s a presser being put on jointly by the Cards and Warner. Again, Warner can go either way with what he says, but there is definitely a vibe that this is going to be the end.
Well, Urban didn't make mention of it in his last blog before the actual press conference.

He also posted a variety of links where all involved were speculating on both sides of the conversation. It was hardly a definitive situation.

It's surprising to me that my gripe is so hotly contested by those that not so long ago didn't even like Warner. Has he risen above criticism at this point? Does anyone think that I would be arbitrarily severe about Warner in particular?

Is it really debatable that the 3 day gap presented a sliver of uncertainty about his plans?

Ok... the selfish, self-serving SOB, screwed up.

He should have had your feelings at top of mind.

Well, it’s 5 am in the morning and I still can’t get to sleep. I found myself lying awake, a million thoughts racing through my mind. I tried to tell my self that yesterday was just another day, disappointing but nothing to lose any sleep over.
But the reality is….it wasn’t just another day. And I can’t sleep. I guess I feel like the woman who has watched her marriage crumble and yesterday was the day it finally came to an official end.
Not only have I lost my handsome prince who was going to be the answer all my dreams, but the whole family is in turmoil.
I will always love you Jake (edit:Kurt), and I know that deep down you still love me too. You were my handsome prince, and you rode in and swept me off my feet. What a wonderful courtship it was. I was just a plain girl, always passed over by the most popular boys. But you told me you saw my beauty, and I believed you. It seemed like we were just made for each other. I’ll never forget that day in ’98 (edit:2004 - I think) when you brought me that gorgeous new gown and took me to the prom in Dallas. I will treasure that forever. But then I saw things starting to change.
The kids were now running around the house screaming “daddy, daddy” buy us more toys like you used to. I saw the strain in your face as now sometimes bills started becoming overdue. You kept trying, determined to be all that you promised you would. But I could also see the confidence receding too. But you bravely kept trying everything in your power to still make it all work. Even when the kids, kept screaming at you, and you would sometimes get so frustrated you would say, “I don’t even give a rats ass”. I knew you didn’t really mean it, that you still, deep down, loved all of us and wanted things to work. But now you’ve left me. We both saw it coming, I knew it was only a matter of time until some fairy princess came along and caught your eye.
I don’t blame you. Life is like that sometimes. I want to hate you for running out on us, but I also know you really did try, and that’s all I could ask for. I will miss you a lot. But I do wish you well, even though every time I see you with her, I will feel a little twinge of jealousy and a little pain in my heart for what might have been but didn’t turn out to be. I guess instead of Prince Valiant, you ended up more Willie Loman.
And to top it off, then David , the Greek god who came into the family and seemed like he could carry us on his shoulders wherever we wanted to go. But it all turned out to be virtual reality, and instead of our saving Hercules he turned out to be more of an Icarus, He thought he could be god. And he flew to close to the sun and melted his wings. Now I see him like a gladiator in the land of Thor. And when I go to the arena, I will still marvel at his wondrous strength. But I will feel a little bitterness, a sense of betrayal and a feeling that not only were his wings of wax, but his heart was to. The applause will only be polite and restrained at best.
There have already been new suitors stopping by, to preen and pay their respects. And I smile, yet the hurt holds back my trembling hand. I can’t help but feel some of their smiles are painted and their words little sugar cookies, but they glance sideways at the kids and my cellulite. The reality has struck, my Camelot has taken a heavy hit. The hard part is, that it all has affected so many others in the family too. And the kids don’t understand. All they know is daddy’s gone and all they can do is jump and scream and say look at me. I am important too. I hate daddy for leaving.
Thank god for Marcel and a lot of the rest of the family. We’ve all been through a lot, but hopefully now this dark and lonely night may indeed be showing the traces of dawn.
Now I will hope that someone does come along, who will accept me for what I am, and what I know I can be, kids and all. I can dream can’t I.
.

ok, now you just sound like a jilted lover. it's only football and he's just a human being.

Hmmm.....................

Although, actually cheesie, it sounds more like a dream to me.

:D

Anyone else irritated by Warner using 3rd person to speak about himself all the time and of course the whole "god" thing?

The only thing that would make me lose respect for the guy now is if he unretired.

It's a big deal when a guy like Warner hangs it up, it was very nice of him to tell everyone so soon, very classy.

This lets the team move on, very unselfish to tell people now, could of waited months.

I'll miss seeing number 13 dropping back and having that feeling that if enough time ticks off he's going to hit someone for a big gain.

Anyone else remember that?

It was like if the line holds long enough ... 1001 1002 1003 ok this is going to be good!

BTW, Mr. Warner.

I was an idiot to ever question you.

It's even discussed earlier in this thread--the same day the conference was anounced.
Has he risen above criticism at this point?
Absoluely not. I (and obviously some others) just don't think it's warranted in this case.

Not a surprise as many of us pretty much saw it coming.

Does QB become the #1 concern this off season? You can't win in this league without an elite QB. Should the Cardinals go after the top QB in the draft and even trade up id need be? They do have the salary to try to lure a free agent QB as well.

Eli Manning is not an elite QB, well at least he wasn't when the Giants won, he was pretty average, he's since made strides towards that at least in terms of QB ratings.

Trent Diler is not an elite QB.

In the last 10 years both won the SB.

Let's not make blanket statements that are untrue.

:yeahthat:

I think only two NFC teams (Lions/Vikings) since 1990 have NOT made it to the Super Bowl. All of those teams didn't have elite QB's ... yet they had some success ... and that's only looking at half of the league ...

Good point, but both teams had excellent defense and I don't see that defense with the Cardinals. You're right I shouldn't have blanketed it like that, but I was just looking at in terms of the Cardinals being one of the best teams in the conference again next year.

Agreed, but excellent defense does tend to be common in those teams as well. Again it's not all on the QB, but having an elite QB makes a huge difference over not having one. I think we can agree on that. ;)

I don't consider Big Ben to really be elite either.

We agree though on the defense thing, we need that to majorly improve to have any chance now.

He certainly wasn't elite when they won their first Super Bowl with him as a rookie. He was a pretty big time passer last year and this year though.

Yes, we have to be quite serious about the defense. I think we won't fall off as far as some think on offense, but we often needed every point possible the last two years. I wonder if Kurt's decision will now get an offer on the table to Dansby that probably wasn't going to be made before?

Yep his first one would of fallen into the non elite category for sure.

The 2nd one is more debateable, he certainly is no Manning but he was good enough to tear our hearts out so yeah, I'd give you that one.

I'm not sure Dansby is the answer, not at the money he's going to want.

I love Dansby and always have but he's getting too old for the kind of money we're going to have to pay and he's not the greatest fit as it is in our scheme.

We need a host of young guns to come in and start building a true championship defense, I'd focus more on keeping Docket happy and building around what we have left.

DRC, Wilson and Rolle are all good pieces, we need another corner, several good LBers and a nose an awesome nose tackle, hopefully we can trade Boldin for a pick and then get a great new crop and hopefully sign maybe one solid FA to help out the defense.

We're not that far away IMO from building a really stud defense but we have holes that'll kill us if we screw up.
