There is not a single nail in any door in my house.

Well wadda ya know. I had to look. None of the entry doors in my house do.

But I have antique furniture that has doors and the doors have nails. Handmade nails at that. So I got door nails!

just out of curiosity... what was the initial post written about? something in Homeland?

Actually it was for Walking Dead. However, I just started using stupid Taptalk for my iPad and it was not that intuitive how to respond versus create a new thread. LOL.

Dead as a doornail origins ...

I consulted the copy desk on this one. They are a repository on the history of words. It's a little frightening how much they know about language.

The consensus on this one is 3 parts:

- Doornails in the 14th century were literal nails, ginormous pieces of iron that were wrought and bended and used to hang knockers.

- These knockers which evolved from nails were used so often, it probably became a euphemism to refer to them as 'dead' because of their age and wearing over the years.

- The euphony of the phrase in the very popular King Lear probably allowed this phrase to linger 700 years into the future. Pondering the idea of writing ANYTHING that would be used in common lingo for that long was probably the most impressive thought of the day.

Once again, Gee asks a great question. He should have been a journalist.

.

Here are the knockers Matt described.

If you can't find a nail in your door, then nail this.

I thought to myself, "They're going to go blue with the door knockers theme."

And they did. They really did.
