Jake, you should start a thread so we can take a stab at guessing when we'll get those 4 wins.

Did anyone on this board actually believe we would win on the road in the Superdome. I sure as heck didn't.

I did. Why not? It's the NFL. Did anyone actually believe the Cards would beat NE in Foxboro last season? Yet they did.

But for most people it isn't losing its how badly they lost. Most people just wanted the Cards to be competitive for the entire game.

They were competitive for three quarters, then the wheels completely fell off.

Maybe two. The offense looked competitive for one drive. I said it all week we need at least 30 to win. If we were scoring the saints wouldnt have scored as much.

Exactly. 8 straight Punts isn't being competitive. 8 punts and two interceptions to end their last 10 possessions. That's pasthetic.

Oh well no matter how bad the current team is at least I know they'll win 4 more games.

Fine, the Defense was competitive for three quarters, until the ineptitude of the offense bled out and the patient died.

Begs the question - Does BA script the first dozen or so plays of his opening drive? Because the difference between the crisp execution of that first possession and the futility of all that followed was like the difference between the U of Oregon offense and that of a Pee Wee team.

I thought all coaches scripted the beginning of the game based on what they think they can do to the opposing D.

A question about the "scripted" plays. How can you script the first 5-10-15 plays when you have no idea what the down and distance will be?

I wondered the same thing and IIRC the scripted plays are designed to see how the D reacts to those plays. Some of the plays are designed/chosen after reviewing tape of their D.

So if we come out in a 2 TE set what does the D counter with, etc. etc. Down and distance isn't as big a consideration and I would guess that they have 15 plays scripted but not necessarily in an exact order.

To paraphrase Big Al: "We don't take what the defense gives us; we do what we want and let our opponent take what we give them."

Maybe that's the theory that underpins the concept of scripting - at least early in games before we know what the defense is doing anyway. Two major advantages of scripting: (1) your QB knows in advance what to look for and what his progressions/options will be and (2) the entire offense can devote more time toward practicing those plays so they can execute them better.

But how many scripted plays are there? What happens on your next series if you go 3 and out on your first? What if play one is a pass and your QB is sacked and now it's 2nd and 16 and scripted play 2 is a run off tackle?

I don't think they are scripted in order. They are a mix of passes and runs that will fit a variety of scenarios, meant to glean some knowledge of how the defense is planning to play you in set conditions that you can then base future playcalling decisions off of.

Now this states what I wanted to say but more succinctly than I did.

It could also be just a set of formations to see how the defense will line up with the option to run or pass called before the snap. At least that's how I always figured it would work.
