Weird Al has a new cd coming out on 5/20/03!

It will include parodies of songs by The Backstreet Boys, Billy Joel, Avril Lavigne, and Eminem (pretty sure it's of Lose Yourself) among others.

Also: Weird Al in concert at the Dodge Theater on 9/4/03!

You are correct BIM - he is paroding "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. He was also in the midst of shooting a video for it when he was denied Eminem's blessing to do so.

I think it is funny when artists get a big sense of self importance and they can't laugh at themselves a little.

Marshall should lighten up a little.

He says Eminem felt "a Weird Al video would somehow detract from his legacy or make him seem like a less hip hop artist."

Yeah, exactly.

The last artist to get upset at Weird Al's parodying of their song was Coolio.

Now Coolio would love to just have a song that Al would parody...

If I was an artist, I would love it. It's like your single being released all over again. When people listen to Weird Al, they're aware of which song he is covering, etc.

And a video of Weird Al doing all of the 8 Mile type stuff would have been awesome! Like when he parodied Michael Jackson in videos.

Typically if I like his parody of an artist I'll go and look for that artists disc or single of that song and buy it. A video would further help drive those additional album sales. I don't think that was a smart move on Eminem's part - but whatever.

What's really cool is that Weird Al doesn't need permission from the artist to do the parodies or videos - he get's it out of respect for them. If they decline his wanting to do the parody - he doesn't do it. There is no legal action they can take against him for proceeding with the video if he so choose. But I think it's cool that he respects their music enough to abide by their wishes - I think it shows that he has respect for their music as an art form.

The Coolio thing was a mixup in communication and he's apologized about it.
