The National Football Post's Brad Biggs has spoken with sources that say the Cardinals are "quietly hoping" to make a run at free agent Matt Hasselbeck.

Perhaps Arizona has not already "come to an understanding" with Marc Bulger. At 35, Hasselbeck is actually more than 18 months older than Bulger, but has started 19 more games over the past two seasons, and generally proven to be much more durable. Supplied with relatively few weapons of late in Seattle, he'd be an intriguing fit with elite wideout Larry Fitzgerald.

Every rookie QB drafted moves the Cards closer to a better FA QB.

I like Mcnabb, Redskins was the only team that ran less than the Cardinals last year.
Mcnabb is a great with a decent run game, 326 carries by Beanie and Mcnabb gets a SB win!

It was always a forgone conclusion IMO that we weren't going to take a QB, you don't do that at our stage of coaching development.

Taking one like the Jags did should be a warning sign to their coach IMO.

Anyhow, a FA QB will be an upgrade of that I'm almost sure but that's not saying much.

Right now we're in desperate need of a pass rush.

There are going to be some great players available to us in round 2.

When you improve your secondary you can blitz more.

The Cardinals can show an impressive 40 nickel pass rush. Go Cover 1, send Wilson (and move him around) to the line, Toler, DCR and Peterson in coverage with Rhodes over the top.

Getting Hasselbeck at this point would be a major win. He's a B+ kind of veteran starter and he's the right kind of guy you want while developing Skelton, who could still very well see some action. Hasselback is a short-termer. He's got maybe two more years in him. That's about how much time the Cards need to resolve the long-term QB issue.

WAY better than Bulger and only 1 year older.

Roger that. My only concern is Hasselbeck's health (& I'm not crazy about Bulger and his lack of mobility). But I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if we kept 4 QB's - Hasselbeck and Bulger with Skelton and Bartell learning the craft in a more gradual structured manner.

Mallet may be the best QB in the draft? just as risky as Newton IMO. nuthin will change if Whiz don't call Beanies number within normal limits.

Agree..don't want Bulger at all. Would take Alex Smith before him

Either that or a vote of confidence. "Hey coach, we understand this pick isn't going to help you this year. Don't worry about it; you're good for a few years in our book. Make him a player."

I want us to sign Alex Smith or trade for Shaun Hill. I'd rather have Hill of the two, but we'd have to give something up in trade to get him.

Not a fan of either Bulger or Hasselback. Are we just looking at NFC West QBs that aren't good enough for their teams anymore, or are we looking at other QBs in the league?

Sorry. I just don't see either of these guys helping our team make the playoffs next year.

So you want one of two San Francisco cast offs? Smith has proven worthless in the NFL, even in a spread offense where he, in theory, should have excelled and Hill is a journeyman back up who is very underwhelming to watch.

Trust me. Bulger is a better fit here than your 49er castoffs.....and I'm vehemently against signing him.

+1 if we don't have kolb, mcnabb, or young I don't think we can win the west esp when the rams are gonna be better.

Whoa, they aren't my 49er castoffs...I'm a Cards fan! Smith showed that he can be good in a spread offense...but they didn't do that very often, because they're a running team. Even when they did let him sling it downfield, he continually got replaced every time he made a mistake. That is not an atmosphere conducive to good QB play.

I notice you didn't talk about Shaun Hill, and that's probably because he's become a darn good QB in Detroit.

How about YOU trust ME. They are both better fits. No wait, that's just IMO. Just like Bulger being better is just your opinion.

I agree with you about Smith but I just think Hill is a competent QB a nice back up who will look good in spurts but ultimately show you what he is a less than average starting QB.

Bulger stinks out loud though...unless we have a time machine to take us back to 2006.

Welcome to Risk City, Jersey Girl.

Here's the question: Do you believe that the Cards were one competent QB away from being in playoff contention last season (& therefore this season)?

If you do, the next question has to be: "How good would that QB have to be to be considered "competent?'"

Followed by: "Do you feel either Hasselbeck or Bulger would be competent enough?"

And then: "Do you feel that either Hasselbeck or Bulger would be more competent than Skelton or Bartell assuming that either Cardinal QB improves as expected over the offseason?"

My answer to the latter question is: "I don't know." But I do think this is what the Cardinal FO has to wrestle with.

Applied to evaluating Hasselbeck, Bulger, Mallett or Skelton, I think we're operating in a vast area of risk. Quite possibly the best we can do - at least for now - is to spread that risk by keeping open as many of those options as possible and hoping that one of them proves to be a winner.

Personally, my hope is that (a) we won't need a QB as good as Peyton Manning to get us to the playoffs and (b) Skelton will improve enough to win the starting job (over any of the other 3) and take us to the playoffs.
