What happened to Taylor Mays?
I wasn't shocked. My reasoning in two words:

Roy Williams

Mays is supposed to be an amazing athlete and a lights-out hitter, but the rap on him is that he plays the safety position more like a LB and will go for the big hit before he'll opt for the smarter play on the ball. (This at a time when the trend in defensive schemes skews more toward better "cover safeties" to match up with multi-receivered passing offenses).

Also - watching tape on him - it just seemed to me that he's one of those loosey-goosey guys whose body is too long for his coordination and who uses his pure strength, size and straight-ahead speed to "force the issue" technique-wise.

This doesn't mean he's a bad person (or that he won't be a very good football player). It just means that other safeties wound up being rated higher.

Hey Gohard, up for a little bet?

If the Cards take the division AGAIN, you never return to this board..EVER.

If the Niners win the division, you never return to this board..EVER.

Deal?

Oh, and if by some miracle the Rams or Seahawks win it...
you never return to this board..EVER.

It's really win/win for everyone!

Umm no...I love you guys so I don't want to leave. People are on here are always mad at me for some reason. Seriously, it's just football and fans are supposed to back their team up--duh.

Matt Leinart has been in the league for 4 years now. When was the last time he had more TDs than INTs?

At this point, Alex Smith is the better QB, only a homer would argue otherwise. Actually, Leinart's the worst QB in the NFC West now that Rams have drafted Sam Bradford. The 49ers are your team's worst nightmare. Our defense will destroy whatever your offense has to offer for the next few years. While our offense isn't all that great, but your defense is even worst. What did you guys give up the last 2 games? something like 100 points? rofl....:D

You mean the 2 PLAYOFF games? How much did the 49ers give up in the playoffs again, oh that's right, you weren't there, again.

Never had a chance? Lienhart was supposed to be the starter last year correct? It was only due to his horrible play in the preseason that your coaches made the smart choice and went with Warner.

Lienhart has had a waayyy better offense to work with. Our O-line was ranked 32nd last year. Now I get this is like trying to argue whose the faster kid at a special olympics race, but Ill never say that "(smith will) carve your defense up"

We have a man named Gore whose willing to do that:)

And if Smith is good how come SF tried to sign Warner last year? I mean if you think Leinart should have beaten him out why does your coach and GM think Warner was better than Smith?

I never said he was the worst I just said that he didnt beat out warner, smith wouldnt have either. I also am not calling a camaro a ferrari. Lienhart has never looked GOOD. Smith has at different spans of his career.

Fortunately this Lienhart guy doesn't play for us.

Really? Leinart has never looked good? Please troll.. He played very solid rookie season and put team in position to win more games and the defense let the team down. He is 7-10 as a starter and would easily be reversed if it weren't for poor d. It's not enough to call him great and not enough to call him bad.

He has also seen four or five different O-coordinators in his career as well. The jury is out , but please don't come with nonsense.

Forget the defense he'd be 9-8 if Rackers didn't miss those 2 kicks in Matt's rookie year.

Do know who a better ranking, pass percentage and more yards than Lienhart his rookie year?

Ill give you a hint it rhymes with malex smiff;)

Well it sure wasn't Alex Smith that's for sure.

Alex' rookie passer rating 40.8, Matt's 74, Alex 50.9%, Matt 56.8, Alex 875 yards, Matt 2547 yards. Alex has only topped Matt's rookie year yardage figure once, and it took him 16 games, Matt did it in 12 games with 70 less attempts.

You really ought to look things up before you post.

Why? when you so clearly are adept at looking up stats that I wasnt refering to...maybe I to should go look up stats from different years then I would always make sense!

After that Ill correct someones spelling as a way to prove my superiority.

Then Ill make excuses for why things didnt happen and feel that makes up for whatever malady I was refering to.

And there you have it...the Russ Smith method

What happened to Taylor Mays?

He was running towards the outstreched arms of Pete Carrol but Pete stepped to the side and Taylor couldn't change direction and wound up in San Fran.

Then you need to learn to write coherently because you very clearly said someone had better stats than Lienhart in his rookie year implying you were comparing rookie years. If you want to compare Smith's FIFTH season to Matt's rookie year go ahead but I imagine most 5th year players are better than most rookies. And he still didn't top his yardage numbers and just barely beat him in comp% and passer rating.

It's kind of a silly comparison Alex has 37 TD's 43 INT's a career rating of 69, last year was the first time in his career he had more TD passes than picks.
He hasn't exactly set the world on fire.

Yeah I can see that distinction, I wasnt really trying to make a point by my original point it was ment to be obnoxious and funny. I dont feel that Its really fair to compare the two at this stage being that both have had undesirable circumstances to play under. This year will be the best most accurate test of the two. So we will have to wait and see

We'll see Archuleta was the classic case of a workout wonder that couldn't play, Mays was a much better college player admittedly on a much more talented defense.

How many times did Taylor Mays win the PAC-10 Defensive Player of Year award???

Taylor Mays might be a better prospect coming out of college but to say he was a "much better college player" than Archuleta is a big reach.
