Forecasts are revealing a first look at what the weather will be for the 2025 Boston Marathon.
A week out from race day, forecasts from the Weather Channel and Accuweather both show decent conditions for marathoning.
Unreliable spring weather means that the forecasts could change before race day. But here’s a early look at what weather runners could face on Marathon Monday.
Both the Weather Channel and Accuweather predict a high of 60 degrees on Marathon Monday and a low in the mid to high 40s.
Weather Channel:
High: 60
Low: 48
Partly cloudy
Southeast winds at 10-15 mph
Humidity: 46%
Accuweather:
High: 60
Low: 46
Partly sunny and mild
Southeast winds 6-12 mph
Humidity: 45-54%
While 67 degrees and sunny (last year’s weather for the Boston Marathon) may seem like the perfect temperature, it's actually a bit warm for racers.
Most runners and experts agree that perfect marathon running weather is around 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s because as the distances get longer, the more that even slightly warmer temperatures can affect runners by causing dehydration, fatigue and even heatstroke.
Runners also hope for overcast skies and a light tailwind.
The Boston Marathon's weather average over the past 24 years is a high of 63 and a low of 41, according to Find My Marathon.
But the average doesn’t tell us much, as weather on race day has varied widely over the last decade.
Data from Find My Marathon and the BAA
Of course, the exact weather also depends on when you start the marathon. Most runners will start sometime from 10 to 11:15 a.m., while professional and wheelchair athletes go earlier. The later you start, the closer to the heat of the day.
Find My Marathon has a tool that allows you to input your start time and your goal finish time to see what temperature it will be at different points in the race.
There have been a few days in Boston Marathon history that have especially stood out because of the severity of the weather.
Runners have had to battle the snow in at least 6 marathons: 1906, 1908, 1925, 1961, and 1967. Those last two years featured snow squalls: in 1961, the snow was driven by winds of 10-12 mph and recorded temperature was 39 degrees.
More common, however, is extreme heat. In 1905, the temperature was reported to have reached the 100-degrees mark in 1905. At least 10 other marathons since then have passed 80 degrees, most recently 2004 and 2012. The prior was 86 degrees at the finish and saw a record numbers of heat-related illnesses.
The 129th Boston Marathon is on Monday, April 21, which is also Patriot’s Day.
The Boston Marathon is traditionally held on Patriot’s Day, which is the third Monday in April. It is often called "Marathon Monday."
It also happens to be the day after Easter Sunday this year.
