The Masters opened Thursday with gorgeous sunshine, but AccuWeather was calling for a big change overnight before the start of Friday’s second round at Augusta National Golf Club.

Rain was predicted to arrive in the Augusta area before midnight, and the overnight forecast included an 88 percent chance of rain. That included a 35 percent of thunderstorms. It’s a good bet Augusta National’s SubAir System, which is capable of helping dry greens, is turned on before the second round.

What is the forecast for Friday?

As of Thursday afternoon, AccuWeather predicted a 44 percent chance of rain Friday at the Masters. That included a 14 percent chance of thunderstorms. Winds were forecast to be 16 mph out of the west, with gusts reaching as high as 39 mph. Friday’s high temperature was predicted to be 71 degrees.

Augusta National also forecasts the weather, and the club was calling for a 60 percent chance of rain overnight before 4 a.m. Friday, then a 40 percent chance of rain from 4 a.m. through 9 a.m. The club expects it to be mostly cloudy early Friday afternoon, then a 30 percent chance of rain after 3 p.m.

What happens if there is a rain delay?

Friday’s first tee time is 7:40 a.m., when there is a good chance of rain. The last tee time of the day is 1:45 p.m. If play is delayed long enough by storms Friday, players will complete the second round Saturday morning, the 36-hole cut will then be made to top 50 players and ties, and pairings will be shuffled to send the leaders out last. Sunset will be at 7:56 p.m. Friday, so there is some cushion if delays don't run too long.

If the weather is even worse than anticipated, Friday could be a total wash. In that case, it’s likely there would be 36 holes played Saturday. That scenario has played out four times, in 1936, 1938, 1939 and 2003. The Masters also has gone to a Monday finish five times, most recently in 1983, but with a sunny weekend predicted, that’s a very unlikely scenario this year.

What is the forecast for the rest of Masters Week?

As of Thursday’s afternoon forecast, AccuWeather was predicting great golf weather for Saturday and Sunday in Augusta. Saturday’s forecast included a 5 percent chance of rain with a high temperature of 65. Sunday had a zero percent chance of rain and a high of 71 degrees for the final day of the Masters. Augusta National’s forecasts were similar.
