Just felt like looking at what this team has, and doesn't have and might as well throw it up on the board.
Note: I may or may not defend some of this, strictly opinion, no research, just a first glance.
As a whole:
It is really apparent what is going on with this team. Super Bowl worthy defense, and a toilet bowl worthy offense. An offense so bad that our defense is good for +10 pts a game, and our offense is good for -14 pts a game.
Take the other team out of the equation every week cause the Cardinals are fighting themselves 99% of the time.
Defense ? If we could make a few tweaks that would be gravy, but as it stands, nothing really needs to be done. Most of the players on under contract, and I expect Kerry Rhodes to get some $$$ this offseason.
Offense ? At this point, blow it up. There is nothing salvagable on this offense. Why waste the time fixing something when it will be less time to just start over. Anytime I think about a player who could improve, or be good in the future, etc., etc. I look at the team offensive stats, the record, etc., etc. EVERYTHING is on the table, or it least should be.
Special Teams ? The forgotten unit. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! They were supposed to be an asset this year, and have just been along for the ride.
Coach:
1. Do whatever it takes to keep Ray Horton in town - Why? Look at the stats, the chemistry, the understanding of the scheme by the players, the understanding and use of the talent on the roster by the coaches. Clear as day this guy is a top of the line defensive coordinator.
2. Whiz. ............. 6,7,8. A system that no QB, or WR can seem to figure out. Has too many "loyalities" to people that are hurting this organization. Plus the phrase, "Gives us the best chance to win" and his idea of benching guys, what seems to be at random for "not doing their job" are a bit of a convenient truth at this point. ....... again, just look at the proof of failure. The stats, the massive confusion on offense, the massive talent whole at offensive line, the "worst QB situation in the league" and that is AFTER having Max Hall, Derek Anderson, and John Skelton as your QB's. This is Whiz's show and his system, it would be naive to think he doesn't have a major hand in the offensive talent brought in. And how much did Whiz learn while in AZ ? His last 1st round pick was Michael Floyd......... Only the Cardinals would bring Whiz back. I have no idea why they would, but if they do it will be without Miller or Grimm, or respect from any NFL team, player, or fan.
3. Mike Miller - 2nd in command of the offense. His job IS the offense. The offense and the job Miller has done with it, speaks for himself. Only the Cardinals would bring this guy back.
What to do:
I know it is the "popular/hot" topic of the league right now, but Norv Turner would be a good canidate for the OC job. He always does well with QB's, and his offense has shown to work through the years. Plus I think we have the personnel he would like.
As for head coach ? I agree with many people on this board that Ray Horton would be a huge risk. Yet, I am one of the few that would like to see this risk taken to keep Horton in town. This IS the Cardinals. What is the worst that can happen ? We suck again ? Been there done that. It is not THAT crazy. Horton has shown the ability to work well with the players, his system works, and he has the even keeled, business like demeanor that many of us like about Whiz.
Other canidates ? I would like at Mike Mularky whom I doubt will be in JAX next year. I think Romeo Crennell could be a canidate, or some good "offensive" college coach.
Preliminary End Product:
HC: Mike Mularkey
OC: Norv Turner
DC: Ray Horton (Asst. Head Coach as well)
Offense:
1. Do what you can to keep Kevin Kolb as your back up QB. Kolb improved over the offseason, and during the season. He is not a good QB, but the best we have on the roster. We need at least SOMETHING going into the offseason.
2. Find a QB. Ugh. Don't even know where to start. The fairy tale is that San Diego loses their mind and somehow Phillip Rivers is available, but that is not going to happen. Why on earth would SD do that ?
3. Fire Lindley, and Skelton. Nothing to see here folks, move on.
4. Running back - What a mess. Is LSH that much better than William Powell. Wells, and Williams are both back next year. Yet, I think it is a mistake to keep both. Too injury prone to rely on, and neither seems to do well in the offensive system Whiz runs. Let the future OC look at these guys and pick the best one out of the two for their offense. Running back value in the NFL is plummeting and there are some #2 backs that will be available. You can get a RB better than what we have for a decent value, IMO. Not the end of the world if we keep what we have, but it's complete on the organization if they bring this collection glass back, and it breaks. I would also kick the tired of Javarris James in the offseason. Not a bad 4th RB, IMO, and he is a RFA at the end of the season.
5. The offensive line ? LOL. Blow it up. Levi Brown, Nate Potter, Bobby Massie, Daryn Colledge, Adam Snyder, Senio Kelemete, Lyle Sendlien, Rich Ohrnberger, and B'Anthony Batiste. There is an offensive line in there some where, not to mention it won't hurt anything to get better talent. There will be some players available to improve the OT position, not so much at OG where this team REALLY needs to improve. Our guards are appalling, so bad that I can be bothered to complain about our center who is forever horrible. Maybe instead of drafting another bust of a skills player on offense the organization will get a top of the food chain offensive line man.
Give me 4 high quality athletes on the offensive line. I do not give a DAMN if "they never played that position before", or "they don't fit the mold at that position". My arguement against those statements are: 1. The "mold" hasn't worked in 5 years, and 2. many of these offensive linemen don't look like they have ever played in the positions they are currently at, so explain to me again the reason why not to move them. If for example, Levi Brown, Nate Potter Bobby Massie, and some other guy are your best athletes and best linemen, then put them all out there.
6. Tight End - I am comfortable here, and at fullback.
7. Receivers - Michael Floyd.....right now he is looking every bit the player he looked to be in the draft. There are only about 60 players I would like to have besides this guy. He is a better TE then a receiver and that is not a complement. We needed a big WR that could get off press coverage, and we still need a big WR that can can off press coverage. With the 5 WR we have now, we have room to bring in another WR after Early Doucet is FINALLY released.
8. There is no excuse to not improve the offense this year. None. They have plenty of "key" players, LOL key players my pu-toot, on offense that are locked up in contracts that will bring them back next year. No lockout, not lack of stadium, no franchise player to worry about, no excuse. Go out and improve the offense.
What to do:
1. Get a new offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and possibly head coach. Let them sift through the garbage and see if they want any of this trash.
2. Draft, sign, find, get, whatever it takes. A QB better than Kevin Kolb.
3. Fix the offensive line. Blow it up, look at it from different angles, find the 5 best offensive linemen. I can live with Sendlein another year, but if he goes then there are no complaints from me. If Chance Womack is the best OG and best lineman at the time of the 1st pick, you have no complaints from me. Don't reach on some "Matt Leinart" QB. We need a good, young, powerful, OG for this line.
B]Preliminary End Product: [/B]
QB:
1. [Bueller ?] - Phillip Rivers, Joe Flacco
2. Kevin Kolb/[Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones, Draft Pick]
3. [Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones, Draft Pick]
HB:
1. Wells or Williams
2. William Powell
3. -?-
4. Javarris James
WR:
1. Fitz
2. Roberts
3. Floyd - ugh
4. -?-
5. Byrd
LT: [Free Agent] \ Levi Brown \ Nate Potter
LG: Colledge\Snyder\Levi Brown\Kelemete\Potter\[Free Agent]
OC: Lyle Sendline\[Feel free to improve this position]
RG: [Womack]\Colledge\Kelemete\Levi Brown\Nate Potter\Bobby Massie
RT: Bobby Massie\Levi Brown\Nate Potter
Defense:
1. Keep Ray Horton
2. Gotta sign some safeties. Kerry Rhodes, Rashad Johnson, and James Sanders can all become Free agents this offseason. I would like all three to come back, but 2 out of the three is good with me. Love to see the team pick up Kenny Tate as a UDFA next offseason.
3. There is never a time where any NFL team should not be looking to improve its pass rush. OLB'er is less of a concern these days. I believe Quentin Groves is an a steal for the Cardinals, I would hope they bring him back. Wouldn't hurt to use a pick in the draft as well. Has Shaun Phillips of SD really fallen off the map ?
4. Find some defensive line depth. Eason, Holliday are old.
5. SILB. Not the most important position on the field, but it is something the Cardinals are lacking. I for one was happy with what I saw out of Reggie Walker, but he has been hurt, and is now a question mark. Lenon, is going down hill fast, and the mystery that is Stewart Bradley continues. Maybe pickup Chris Gocong if he is released by the Browns ? Maybe DJ Williams has worn out his welcome in Denver ? Or keep on eye on a player like Jasper Brinkley ?
That is for the defense:
What to do:
1. Keep Horton.
2. Re-sign 2 out of the 3 free agent safeties.
3. Sign some depth, and a SILB.
That is it.
