I think gilmore was our backup kick returner after martay was injured..but gilmore was also injured and did not get the opportunity. I think we used anderson then kasper..so I think gilmore was out 2nd kick returner last season...doing this off of memory.. not sure he had much of a chance on kickoff returns due to injury sequence..

He may push Finneran for the number 2 spot, but he'll lose. Finneran is a damned good WR, IMO. I think MarTay will wind up being the 4th or 5th option in that offense, at best.

1. Price
2. Finneran
3. Crumpler
3a. Dunn
4. Vick tucks and runs
5. Jenkins

I agree, though I don't think that Finneran "is a damned good WR". I had him on my fantasy team, and he went weeks where he did nothing (I had injuries to my wideouts).

i think things turned out bad for both sides...

you have to admit that mar tay was a threat to take it the distance every time he ran back a kick... I do NOT get that feeling from kasper...

and his speed made him valuable at WR. he could stretch the defense a little. I believe he was progressing as a WR.

we needed mar tay... if only for another year. but we NEEDED him for 2003. and it stinks that he left.

but signing for the veteran minimum with a new team with a qb that is unproven? man... thats the kind of thing that could lead to getting cut halfway through the season, and being out of football in a couple of years. He should have kept his mouth shut and played in AZ in 2003.

bad bad bad.

its going to take consecutive winning seasons before I believe that there is not some kind of curse on this team...

Jason, you sat right next to me while we watched Kasper take a kickoff, run in a straight line right into the wedge, duck his head and fall down. Twice.

How can you say he has even a small amount of talent as a return guy?

Kasper has a chance to make a contribution to the Cardinals as a possession receiver as we did see him make some tough catches in traffic last year.

But a kick returner, no way.

Just asking.... If Gilmore is so fast why doesn't he return kickoffs?

Yes I did, and honestly at that point I had major concerns about having Kasper as the guy. However look at it this way, this was at the Oakland game in week 12 the first game Kasper had kickoff return duties. look at his KR stats starting in week 12 thru the final week of the season:

Week 12 vs Oakland had 6 returns for 132 yards avg 22.0
Week 13 at KC had 6 returns for 120 yards avg 22.0
Week 14 vs Detroit had 4 returns for 80 yards avg 20.0
Week 15 at St. Louis had 7 returns for 164 avg 23.4
Week 16 vs San Francisco had 2 returns for 55 yards avg 27.5
Week 17 at Denver had 7 returns for 171 yards avg 24.4

In his first 3 games had 16 returns for 332 yards avg 20.75
In his final 3 games as he became more comfortable with the team and the blocking scheme he had 16 returns for 390 yards avg 24.4

Once again I point out, that I do think coming in and playing with a new blocking scheme will throw you off, give him those 6 games and a full training camp and I think averaging 25+ yards should be about right for Kasper, which would put him in the top 10 of KR's in the league, maybe a yard or 2 behine Martay but not enough to where I would worry about it. A

And an advantage to Kasper over Martay, how many of the KR's that kasper did for us (32) did he fumble, vs how many did Martay fumble? I can remember a couple for martay but can only remember 1 for Kasper....
