For those who want Kolb, Schefter had some discouraging speculation.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=schefter_adam&page=10spot/10week12

[The Eagles also could shop Kolb. But keep in mind that when they did that last offseason, they asked one team for at least two first-round picks in return, according to an NFL source. It is a stance that Philadelphia refused to budge on -- at least two first-round picks for Kolb or no deal. If the Eagles wanted that much for Kolb last offseason, there's no reason to think they would take much less this offseason. /QUOTE]

What did the Texans give the Cards for Leinart, again? Oh yeah, Nothing.

People are down on Mallet for the same reason some on this board were down on Rivers; they haven't seen him play.

If he played in the WAC or Big East the whole "he hasn't won anything" argument might hold some water. But as it stands he plays in the SEC and looked a whole lot better here than Eli Manning or Cutler did.

He can make all of the NFL throws but the most important thing I notice when watching him is his ability to hit receivers that are covered in stride. This isn't Matt Leinart accurately hitting receivers who are open by 5 to 10 yards either. He can beat coerage with him arm and accuracy.

Nobody wanted him.

Only because they waited too long to do anything. And we really don't know that the Bills, Raiders etc. didn't want him or that they did and the Cards couldn't make the deal.

Too many backup QBs have moved for draft picks for me to ever believe that the Cards couldn't get anything for Matt Leinart because nobody wanted him.

Just like Leonard Davis and numerous other players.

At least they finally started to wise up and got something for Boldin and Reggie Wells.

Four of the Top 10 passers were Top 10 picks (those who weren't were Brady, Cassell, Roethlisberger, Rogers, Orton, and Romo). And even of those four, one was acquired via free agency.

Whoops Roethlisberger was the 11th pick....1 pick away from being top ten :p

Do you stand a better chance? I don't know; you're not using sound analysis to say that because the 4 of the top 10 passers are Top 10 picks, then you have to use a top 10 pick to have a top passer. How many QBs in the past 10 years have been top 10 picks and have become Top 10 passers? That's the real way to answer that question.

Probably so, but that has remained fairly constant over the years. If you want to disprove my assertion that top ten is the place to get QBs, you're welcome to it, but as it stands today it's the best spot recently.

I can agree with you on Flacco and Freeman, but Cutler was pretty universally believed to be a Top 10 talent and said by some to be the best QB in that draft.

Some did; but others thought Cutler wasn't elite even at the college level. If you struggle to win in college there's a reason for it. Cutler is highly inconsistent and doesn't take to coaching well. Either way I think you're forgetting how controversial Cutler was as a prospect. Some believed he was the best QB, while others felt he wasn't.

If Mallett stays and plays one more season, then I'd consider drafting him with a top 5 pick. But for this draft, with this player, then no, I'm not interested in using our Top 5 pick on Ryan Mallett, who hasn't won anything in college, either. But Mallett hasn't shown me that he deserves to be a top 5 pick.

HE HAS WON. His first year as a starter, he was 8-5 and this year he's 10-2. He's not playing a MWC, WAC, Big East, or ACC. He's playing in the SEC. National Champions come from the SEC almost annually. So his winning record at a second rate program in the SEC means somehting.

I'm not saying don't draft Mallett. I'm saying don't draft him with our Top 5 pick. If you can find a legit draft ranking that has Mallett in the Top 5, I'll listen to his argument. But people here are looking to reach for need because (1) they're tired of seeing Derek Anderson be terrible, and (2) they're desperate for any hope of having a franchise quarterback. Mallett, IMO, is just not that guy.

See that's the difference; I don't give a rat's what rankings say. That's how you take Alex Smith #1 overall. Ryan Mallet is a very good QB and worthy of a high draft pick. The only thing holding Mallet back from "experts" ranking him higher is off season workouts and other malarkey.

Perhaps not necessarily the best QB, but the best one suited for this team.

Where we draft will decide who we draft. We will draft the best one we think is available to us unless our staff are totally idiots. Our starter next year is probably not in college and will come our of the NFL.

What about Newton K9? I think I remember you liking the fella, yesterdays game wasn't even his best and a lot of folks across the country are now talking Cam. Would you pick him top 5?

My heart LOVES Cam Newton. I want to play with him in Madden so bad (playing Madden with Derek Anderson only makes me hate the real DA more). But my head says that it's--again--too risky with a top 5 pick.

Newton is a less experienced Tim Tebow with a higher ceiling, but a lower floor. I said two months ago that I wish I knew the result of the Tebow Experiment in Denver before I'm forced to make a choice on Cam Newton. My head still tells me that's the case. I don't think his throwing motion has to be totally re-done like with Tebow, but I don't know if he's a pro quarterback.

Luck or Newton

The Cardinals better not consider Newton!! Luck is a legitimate NFL prospect, as is Mallett. I think Newton is a tremendous athlete, but he will not succeed as an NFL QB. Way, way too risky a pick, unless he's there in the 2nd round.

Best QB to get would be luck. However with this OL he will end up like Stafford/Pennington.

Thus Cam Newton and his ability to escape pressure should be perfect.

The ONLY two guys I would draft are Luck & Mallett. Luck has everything, including intelligence to a be a GREAT NFL QB. I honestly think he's the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning came out. Mallett has decent upside, but he's a clearly not as good as Luck. If neither are available, the Cardinals need to bring in a FA or trade for an experienced QB. Someone like Shawn Hill from the Lions or Kyle O from the Broncos. We already have two projects sitting on the bench, why draft more projects??

Even if we draft Luck or Mallet I doubt either would be the starter. In any event we are going to have to find a experienced QB to start the season. Look at Dallas. They pull an old QB out of the scrap heap and they are winning once again. I thought he was out of football until I saw him replace Romo.

A big question is the teams that draft ahead of us are they in need of a QB???? If not, they will likely trade down. One of those might need a WR and Green of Georgia is reported to be the most NFL ready player in the draft. Some of the boards have him going #1 in the draft. The next coming of Larry Fitz. I see us drafting at #3 or #4. We do not have a history of trading up but with the season our QBs are having it is more than just essential we have a real QB in the pipeline. We cannot live off of cast off QBs and hope to have any chance what so ever of ever making the playoffs. St Louis is set for the next decade at QB. This is a year we might be in a position to get a highly rated QB and we should not let it pass. We might not get this chance again for a long time. The draft this year is going to tell us if we are the new Cards or the same old Cards. If money keeps us from drafting one of the good QBs we are essentially the old Cards.

GET RID OF GRAVES!!!!!!! Absolutely the worst GM in the NFL.

First off, I'm not in love with Mallett. I think he's going to be the QB though. Secondly, when have the Cards been foucused on running the ball and good defense?
My main concern with Mallet is his pocket awareness and is he athletic enough to move around. That something that comes with experience alot of the time. Inaccuracy doesn't. If he had all the tools buut threw the ball like DA, I would want nothing to do with him. I'm not against people not liking Mallett but it doesn't make sense to pass on him to take a guy like Devlin in round 2. The whole draft is about taking a risk. The Matt Leinart was supposed to be the most NFL ready QB in years.I've said all along, if you're going to take a QB, take the best one available to you. Don't pass up on a possible elite talent to hope a guy who couldn't cut it at PSU pans out.
Also, I know you like the Huddle report but they're not the be all, end all when it comes to scouting and draft guru's. I'll use Kiper as an example. He has Mallett as 9th. Would it be that much of a reach to take him at 5-6? I've seen the Huddle report beofre. It's a good site. But I saw nothing exceptional that would make me pay for their info. The guys at CBS sportsline, and other sites, do just as good a job, imo.

It is not beyond belief that Mallet may be the first QB taken. The pros do not always agree with us fans. Some boards have Mallet going #1 and the last I looked he was #8 on Mel Kipers board and could very well rise after beating LSU and taking on Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. He is very accurate and has the arm to throw to small openings in the middle. He leads the SEC in average yards per throw and is average is not because of dink passes. He can make any throw the pros want and despite his height has a quick release. I will be interested to see what the pros think of Luck. I have never seen him so I give way to what ever one is saying about him but would have no problem what so ever if we landed Ryan Mallet. With Luck,Mallet, and Newton out there we should be in a position to get one of the three. If our owners see one far better than the other two then try and trade up to get him but at the same time recognize the other two are not high risk picks. Just pick a QB and do not make a stupid reach for some QB in round three thinking that is the answer and will save money.

The players union has advised all players to save there last three pay checks this year in case of a lockout. You would think that as much as they make they would have enough money in the bank to live a year. Michael Vick is reported to have serious money issues right now. I think they said he was in debt to the tune of 4 million.

from what I hear, there is a WR and a pass rusher both worthy of top picks,...so we could possibly get Luck with as low as the third pick.
I do not really like Mallett or Newton in the top 10,...but if I had to choose I would roll the dice on Newton. However it is not likely wizz will ever pick a guy like Newton,...so I hope we lose out, and the stars line up to give us the first pick....it is the only way we assured to get a QB......everyone knows Luck is the concensus first pick for a team needing a QB,...if we draft anyone else or trade out of that spot,...our staff and management will be rediculed for a decade, and never get another job in the NFL....they would be forced to take Luck...if Luck is gone they have wiggle room to draft elsewhere,...like pass rusher.
