When can we call Dansby Swanson a bust?

I agree that we would not have signed him to the contract Detroit did. I do think we should have waited for the trade deadline to get more value for him.
Either that or insist on Teheran in the deal who was a much better piece than Delgado at that time.

Not every trade. But I do try to provide a little counterweight to those that believe the Dbacks lose every trade.

do you really think that the Dbacks lost the Upton trade?

... Come on... do we really have to rehash that? Yes, we lost the Upton trade. If all we wanted was Ahmed and Drury we could have gotten them for beans, those were 2 relatively unknown prospects. The Dbacks target for the trade was Prado and he sucked. Even now, I like Ahmed and Drury but Upton is an unquestionably better player.

Upton's down fall was the hype attached to him. If he'd been the exact same player but wasn't billed as the next Ken Griffey Jr then fans would have loved him, but instead of being an MVP he was merely an occasional all-star. And we traded that occasional all-star while he still had a club friendly contract for a glorified utility player needing a new deal and some low level prospects (whom 5 years later we're finally getting a return on).

Factor in that the Braves supposedly tried to give us Teheran over Delgado and it makes my head hurt.

As for Swanson, despite his struggles, I'm pretty sure we'd all prefer that trade had never taken place. Him struggling early in his first full season does little to ease the pain of trading the #1 pick for a pitcher who was a dumpster fire and then tore his elbow up.

Upton's down fall was he was rushed to the majors. He should have spent a full year to a year and half in the minors..

Wow, did not know that, whomever the GM was (KT I believe) I'm sure has not sniffed a GM position since if that were the case as Teheran was a top ML prospect back then.

Teheran should be a D'Back at this point but should have been included in Upton deal. I would have preferred Teheran over Miller.

He held is own up there right away. I'm an Upton-apologist but he was never going to change his approach at the plate regardless of coaching. He wanted to be a great HR hitter when he could've easily been top-5 every year in extra base hits. He went thru stretches where he compacted his swing and pitchers couldn't get him out. Easiest gap power in the bigs.

I also noticed from very early on he used an oversized bat which affected his swing. I just think he was too stubborn to change his approach. Had Upton been a random 5th rd pick instead of first overall it'd be a great success story.

ATL is dumb by rushing him to the majors, should be in AA right now instead of shuttling him back and forth between minors & big leagues.
