When I watch Skelton, I can't help but see John Navarre.

I don't know what it is, but he just reminds me of John Navarre. I know many on this board see the QBOF in Skelton, but I just don't see it. John Navarre had some really good preseason games his rookie year as well and look what that got him. There is just something about Skelton's game that doesn't sit right with me.

I really hope that I am dead wrong about this guy.

Wow... I dont think you even saw the game. Navarre never had a showing like that.

Skelton was amazing in his first performance. He completed five of six passes two TD's including a big 4th down pass. His one incompletion was dropped. He had a PERFECT 158.3 quarterback rating.

Saw what you want. But he had a great presents in the pocket. He looked off the safety one direction and threw the other.

One game is not a career. But he was not even close to a Navarre...

The only reason there is a comparison is the height. Burn this thread.

Yeah one was a 50" Panasonic LED TV, the other was a 2010 Porsche Cayenne. He looked weird carrying those around with him on the field tho

:D

Oh and Navarre never looked like Skelton did.

I'd say he's closer to being a poor man's Ben Roethlisberger, but it's way too early to make any comparisons. He could very well come out and look like Jim Druckenmiller next week...

It's just my opinion, but I caution people to not get to excited over one preseason game especially when all reports coming out of training camp are that Skelton has been awful. I have always subscribed to the theory that players either have it or they don't especially at the skill positions and that it shows early in camp. Hey, like I said, I hope I am dead wrong about Skelton. What a great thing if he is indeed a "gamer" that can turn it on and be special in games.

I agree about the pre-season should temper the optimism but I also think with a guy like Skelton, coming from a little school and not much in the form of competition, that it would be very surprising for him not to struggle and look bad early in camp. This has to be major football "culture shock" to him with the step up in the complexity of the offense and the step up in playing ability.

I'd say people make WAY too much out of one preseason game.

Navarre was way stiffer and was less mobil but both were big tall kids so that might be what you are seeing.

What I found amusing is that after a couple of weeks of first hand reports from camp about how terrible Skelton looked, bad footwork, scatter arm etc. He goes out and lights up a 3rd and 4th team defense and suddenly he's the QBOF?

He has a very strong arm and he's big, same with Navarre as Holian said, same with Mike Buck etc. Let's at least give him a full preseason before we annoint him because almost to a man everyone who was at camp had the same comment, Skelton was the worst QB in camp, Max Hall was outplaying him.

you know its preseason when someone makes a druckenmiller reference

You also know it's preseason when someone (or several someones) feels the need to tell the rest of us that it's only preseason.

In his defense, he said yesterday on the radio that in practice, his head is swimming from the size and complexity of the playbook. For the game, they cut his plays down to about 20 and he felt much more comfortable.

I have heard over and over that the biggest adjustment for college players in the NFL isn't physical -- its the amount of mental preparation needed and the amount of focus on fundamental techniques.

Especially since they never had to study anything in college.

I have a hard time remembering Navarre completing a pass...

And I don't disagree but you can't play regular season football with about 20 plays.

He may someday down the line be a good QB and I'm glad he played well, but I just find it amusing how quickly we went from talking about Max Hall beating him out to him beating out Leinart in the near future.
