– Money apparently was not an issue. Whisenhunt is due to make $5.5 million to $6 million in 2013. The Cardinals are on the hook for that. Of course, if Whisenhunt gets another job, the Cardinals are responsible for the difference in salaries. At least that’s how the system usually works.

So if Whis gets another job the Cards are not on the hook for the 5.5M? Just the difference?

I haven't heard of this before.

Makes sense.

I'm actually surprised there isn't some non-competitor clause which prevents him from going anywhere else without voiding his contracted salary. Strange that the Cards would need to compensate any difference.

I bet he takes a year off.

Correct. Which is why many coaches take a year off before taking on another job.

it has to be NFL work....which is why fired coaches usually do a year or two in broadcasting....so they get the broadcast salary and still get all of their coaching money.

Whis will make 5.5 mil perfecting his scratch golf game unless he decides to take another coaching job. I wish that were my choice.

Actually the word is Whisenhunt is interested in the SD gig. Of course SD is one of the teams interested in Horton so time will tell. Hopefully SD hires him and overpays.

Yeah hopefully he gets the job and gets like the full 5.5M this year, than MB would owe him nothing.

Why SD do that? They could pay him 1$ and the Card would owe the difference of the 5.5 mil.
It seems like it could be that way, but front offices usually try to keep good relationships with other front offices. It usually isn't a good idea to get labeled as the GM or owner that likes to try and rip off other teams.

True, but we are talking about SD.

Because there are so many job openings that SD may have to get into a bidding war especially since rumors are that BUF also has Whisenhunt's interest and Clayton mentioned that if ARZ gets Todd Haley, KW could end up back in PIT.

Whiz can take the year off, collect his 5.5.mil and play golf everyday, after all, he is a scratch golfer. Work? Maybe next year, for now, golf everyday.

He wants to be on the sidelines THIS YEAR, if he wanted to take the year off he would have not mentioned he is interested in the SD or BUF job. He will generate too much interest besides, this was his first HC job, its not like he's Andy Reid who was the longest tenured HC in the NFL at 14 years and can justify taking the year off after last three very subpar years in ARZ.

At 5.5 mil this year, he would never have to work again, unless he chose to. Think about it he is set for life now.
