Hold onto the ball, Murray!
Let me begin by saying that I love having Coach Whis and that he has done great things for both this team and this organization. He has brought us stability and legitimacy. Yes, things can still get bad, but since when does a terrible game like today still see us with a winning record?
That said, he is still sadly deficient in some crucial areas of coaching. The first one is clear--he needs to realize that he cannot call the plays as the HC. Losing Haley isn't the problem so much as having Whis calling the plays is. The more glaring problem, though, is that he cannot keep this team focused. He managed to do that in the playoffs last year, and for that I am infinitely greatful. The problem is that none of those games were trap games; they were all do-or-die. This team will always seem to show up in obvious 'must-win' games, but will never seem to show up otherwise.
We can talk all we want about players not making plays, but it was clear from the get-go that this team was not prepared to put in the effort and intensity in order to win or even compete. And, when this becomes a trend as it has with us, the finger points one way--back to the head coach. He MUST learn how to motivate this team in trap games and games where momentum has to be maintained. I love him to death for what he's done for us, but until Whis figures this out, he will not rise above mediocrity.
