WHISENHUNT BIDING HIS TIME

There's talk in league circles that new Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding the rounding out of his staff as the Steelers' continue their search for a new coach.

If the Steelers hire someone other than offensive line coach Russ Grimm, and if the new coach opts to make sweeping changes, Whisenhunt is expected to pursue several of his former Pittsburgh colleagues for employment in Arizona.

Whisenhunt already has parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek and defensive line coach Larry Brooks, two of the seven assistants who had been retained by the team after the termination of Dennis Green.

Meanwhile, we're hearing that the players in Arizona already realize that things will be different under Whisenhunt. The new coach won't baby and coddle players like Green did, and the players realize that training camp and all other practices will be more difficult and demanding.

This is good. I think he needs to stop just short of going Buddy Ryan on them.

Whisenhunt basically said this himself when interviewed on Bickley and MJ this morning.

He was asked about how much power he had to choose the coaching staff. Said that he had met with all of the current coaches. Said that the timing of finalizing the coaching staff got was dependant on getting permission to talk to coaches on other teams. Specifically mentioned Pittsburgh and said that whether he was granted permission was dependant on who was named head coach and how many Pitt coaches were retained.

I sure as heck hope that he doesn't wind up with a revolt like Green did during his first season. That would tick me off. Let's see, the players complained about Green being too tough, and now they know Whisenhunt will be tougher. Just how soft have our guys been all these years? It makes you wonder.

A revolt won't happen. Whisenhunt is smart and not driven by his ego like Green is. He'll know how hard to push the team. Remember, he played 9 years in the league.
I went to all 3 training camps during DG's time here. The only one that looked tough and diciplined was the 1st one. The last two were noticably easier and unorganized, IMO.

As long as he follows the rules, things should be fine. We get extra practice time this year since we have a new coach.

Green was sanctioned or warned after violating OTA Rules. In all fairness, he had to be careful after that.

No doubt I am nitpicking on this but I hope he can with the best of his ability get closer to treating all of the players as important and closer to equal in importance. In other words fewer pet players than DG had and that he shows a willingness to communicate with all players not just a select few.

Sean Payton's camp this year was also very difficult for the players but they responded well.

For other coaches who've demanded toughness it's gone... not so well (see: Giants, New York).

Time tells all tales.

it's all in the approach...the first thing that must take hold is a totally new outlook and if the players buy in quickly it is all downhill from there...i have every reason to believe they will
