Whisenhunt is too smart for his own good sometimes

So Ken Whisenhunt decides to have a little competition between Leinart and his boy Brian St. Pierre that everyone with even a tiny bit of footbal knowledge knows is a complete joke and a farce.

Leinart looks fantastic, St. Pierre comes out in a preseason game and looks horrid, and Whisenhunt decides to throw every player out there that was playing with BSP under the bus instead of placing any of the blame on the gong show we call Brian St. Pierre. "He didn't get much help" even though Urban and Breaston played the whole time, guys who played every game last year. No excuses from Whizzy when it comes to Palko playing well with the same cast of characters.

Well now we see that Breaston is injured.....even though he didn't offer Brian St. Pierre any help.

So now his brilliant idea, is to have Leianrt and St. Pierre flip flop roles in the next game. This is completely rediculous, and really is detrimental to the team on many levels. If Leinart is the backup (unles Whiz is a complete moron he will be) he needs all the work he can get now with as many of the guys he will be going to war with. BSP will continue to suck, but now he will be making errant throws, botching plays, and destroying rhythm of players that will be here in September. Meanwhile Lienart will get reps will less roster players, and less valuable work, while playing in a situation where players are more apt to get injured due to camp bodies taking risks in an attempt to latch on to teams.

Sometimes this guy is too smart for his own good. If he is still trying to toughen up Leinart, enough already. This is beyond rediculous. Team first Whiz. Just like you had to suck it up and let Edge play at the end of last year, end your stuperiffic back up QB competition.

Disagree. It's preseason. He said he'd give BSP a fair shake, and that's what he's doing. Coach Whiz is football smart so I don't have a problem with what he's doing. I don't want to see BSP as 2nd string, however.

Only issue I have is with Breaston playing as much as he did... Heck, who knows - he might have tweaked his knee on the first play in the 1st quarter for all I know. But there is NO reason why he was still in the game in the 2nd half... none... THAT was stupid! :bang:

whiz knows ML is most likely the better qb and will most likely be the starter...but he just wants to give BSP more of a chance because he already knows what ML can do for the most part

Saying he would give BSP a fair shake is a mistake. What the hell has BSP ever done to earn a fair shake? Prolonging the rediculousness hurts the team. ANd it does seem like Whiz wants BSP to be 2nd string ebven though he makes me long for the days of John Navarre.

Or maybe he thought BSP looked to terrible and Leinart so good that he's considering only keeping two QBs on the roster.

You don't know what Whisenhunt's motivation for this.

I agree, thats all hes doing. He promised BSP a fair shot and hes doing it.

As far as Matty's concerned he doesn't want to risk him playing with guys who might not be on the roster when the season starts and getting him hurt.

I heard he tweaked it on that long pass play from Warner that just went through his fingers.

If you watch the replay SB came down pretty hard on his knee on that play. Thats why I don't think the injury is a real big deal because he played on it for a while after that play.

Are you saying Whiz doesn't want to risk him playing with 3rd stringers or I? Whiz doesn't care. I do.

I think Whisenhunt said he didn't get much help because Ross let his man through at least three times--that's what he meant.

I have a whole lot of love for Whiz but this was stupid.

He's not a stupid guy, he's a genius, getting us to the SB was pure genius, but this is just stupid.

I dunno -- I bet we could find posts from last year's preseason noting the BSP looked better than Leinart (particularly after the Oakland game) --

Regardless of how he looked -- I can tell you that if it came down to having to play the Cards 3rd string QB in the regular season ( and oh-by-the-way: it happed two seasons ago) I would rather have an experienced BSP in there than never played in the NFL Tyler Palko

There are no entitled players on a Whiz team. He has stated from the very beginning that the best players play regardless of pay, length of service, where or when they were drafted etc. If he didn't have this philosophy the Branch would be starting at NT and Leinart would be the starting QB.

The ridiculous plan got us to the SB last year.

No system or philosophy is perfect and gray area's do exist.

BSP stank it up in the last preseason game and very well may do so again. Without giving him a truly fair chance a educated decision can not be made on his abilities.

Motivating Leinart is only a byproduct of the competition for the #2 QB position. The number one message is EVERYONE a Whiz team earns their spot.

After all the gnashing of teeth around here I am going to laugh if BSP lights it up next week.

Whis would look worse to the players if he didn't give him a chance to play after he said he would.

It was one preseason game. Get a little perspective.

Can someone please start a "Fire Whis" campaign for having the audacity to evaluate players in the first preseason game.

What gall he has to even play Leinart when WE all know how much better he is than BSP and Palko. Whis is a stupid idiot for risking Leinart like that for no reason. Whis should be knee-capped for even letting Leinart suit up and stand on the sideline. Hasn't he ever watched football follies? Someone could run out of bounds and mess up Leinart's hair, leading to a bad picture of him on the internet and forcing him to take a personal leave until he can once again maintain focus enough to execute a flawless choke hold.

Stupid Whis.

We all know Leinart will be #2 in the end. Making him compete for it is not only smart it keeps him sharper than just giving it to him on a silver platter. The whole premise behind this thread is silly IMHO. Anything you can do to create competition and keep your players having an edge is the smart thing to do.

This isn't difficult guys. Whiz knows what he has with Leinart & he already knows that Leinart is our #2. Whiz needs to put BSP in a position to prove himself. There's nothing to prove if BSP does well against 3rd stringers. I'm convinced that the only QB battle is between BSP & Palko. If BSP doesn't do well next week, he's in trouble of being cut & Palko will move to #3. I was at the game & spoke with some very knowledgeable Steeler fans. BSP had every chance to win the # 2 spot with them & COULDN'T. They gave him 2 shots at it & he failed miserably. BSP has 1 more shot to impress Whiz, otherwise he's toast.

If the point is to make your players earn their spots, then it makes sense. Leinart lost the #1 job last year. His task now is to make sure he earns the #2 job this year. That'll go a long way towards making him #1 on Whiz' team, IMO.

My take is that BSP was a free agent and wanted the opportunity before his career is over to at least be a #2. (Can you say Kansas City?) To keep him (he knows the system and doesn't usually look as bad as Thursday, plus Coach remembers his first year when both Matt and Kurt went down and we had no #3 under contract) we offerred him a pay raise to 1 mil and a bonafide chance to compete for the #2 job. Since Coach earned respect and trust with the way he handled last year's QB competition (throw in the Edge/Hightower thing) BSP said OK. In my opinion, the only way this backfires is if BSP outperforms Leinart significantly.
