Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt's cellphone rang as he walked in the front door of his home on Monday afternoon, the word "private" popping up on the caller ID.

Lucky thing Whisenhunt didn't ignore the call. It was an aide in the White House asking him if he had a minute to talk with President Barack Obama, who was holding.

"I don't get a lot of calls from private numbers, but when I do it's usually somebody fairly important," Whisenhunt said. "Obviously, this time he was pretty important."

The president congratulated Whisenhunt on the Cardinals season and said "he was very impressed with the way our men had played, and that was very special."

The president rooted for the Steelers because team chairman Dan Rooney campaigned for him.

"I don't know how they got my number," Whisenhunt said. "I was humbled and I was stunned."

too late

again on principle: a President should never take sides in a sporting event between Americans.

let mayors and governors participate in the silly regional stuff -- the President needs to be above that.

Obama's message pre SB to the Cardinal players: "I hope you lose".

Not appropriate for any President, much less one who ran on the message of a President for everyone.

My reaction was predicatable but my wife who's more a Chiefs fan was more telling to me.

She thought it was extremely poor taste and wanted to take her vote back.

My wifes a reasonable judge of character :) I took notice of her thoughts on this and agree now it was more than just ticking me off it was a real no no in my book.

The reason he gives is more troubling to me. If he was a lifelong Steeler fan so be it but because the Steeler's owner campaigned for you? So much for reaching across the aisle.

To me it is more of a sign of how the Cards performance in the Super Bowl has changed America's perspective of our football team for the better.

I can't count the number of people over the last two days who have told me how impressed they were with the Cards.

That may have been one of the most profitable losses in super bowl history.

Welcome to the big time Arizona.

The guy is naive and lacks wisdom.

honestly Mulli -- I am skeptical

we have heard about Bears and Whitesox during the campaign -- and while I would still have a problem with it (again on principle) -- I could understand if he was for the Bears or Whitesox in a championship game.

I think the real reason is Rooney campaigned for him in a key swing state

which makes it even worse

"Ill take sides if you campaign for me"

Whiz was unsure how the President Of the United States got his number?

If the President wants to talk to you, he'll find a way (or have his people find a way).

"It's a great Cinderella story, but other than the Bears, the Steelers are probably the team that's closest to my heart."

Yeah, sounds like a real diehard.

Well it's actually and interesting thing, if his people simply called the Cardinals HQ and got the number that's fine.

If it's unlisted and they looked it up because of course they can, it's actually not fine at all.

He's naive like was said I doubt he makes that mistake again, he's new, hopefully he'll learn.

I don't buy it as anything but the reason he gave, key supporter etc etc.

Tin ear on the political nuances of that whole situation, but again he's new and I hope he learns.

Obama is a lifelong Steeler fan.

In the interview I saw he said he is a Bears fan. The reason he gave for rooting for the Steelers was Mr Rooney campaigned vigorously for him as did Franco Harris.

Actually no he's just the President, he dosen't have the right to get info like that just cause he wants it even if he is the President.

I don't think Whis is a giant cog in the fight against global terrorisim or anything but maybe he has a couple outstanding parking tickets? :)

And I have seen him say he started liking the Steelers back in the 70's. But I understand people not liking him taking sides.

No problem.

I'd be fine with that and if it is the case no problem. But if this is true why mention the other stuff when asked directly why he was picking one team vs the other. Comes off bad but in the scheme of things who really gives a rats arse.

Why does this surprise any of you?

The only thing that shocked me was that at no point did he switch and tell us Card's fans that he was really rooting for the Big Red. This may be the the first issue other than abortions he hasn't flip-flopped on.
