If the Bidwills had the foresight and the cajones to make the move now---it should be done now. No, actually, they should have given him an "exit interview" yesterday.

Do we now understand why Anquan Boldin can't stand Whisnehunt?

Do we now understand why Ben Roethlisberger can't stand Whisenhunt?

Rather than rehash the whole QB debacle...which really started back in 2008 when Whisenhunt declared Leinart as the starter after Warner, with one arm, courageously led the previously hapless Cardinals to a 5-3 second half by lighting up the scoreboard to the unprecedented (in Arizona) tune of 28 ppg. That's right, 28 ppg.

And you declare Leinart---who struggled with the offense early in the season before he got injured---as next year's starter?

Fortunately for the Cardinals, Kurt Warner didn't give away any power to the naive Whisenhunt...because he saw what the competition was and he continued to believe in himself---in his offensive teammates---and he methodically set out---with Todd Haley in tow---to wrest the real power of the offense away from Whisenhunt.

Mission accomplished.

But let's fast forward---beyond the three QB scenario debacles involving ML, DA and Max...to what has recently transpired with 5th round draft pick John Skelton, whom the Cardinals flew to NYC to meet with and traded up (by giving up a 2009 starting CB) to get.

First of all...with DA and Max having been beaten to pulps in an offense that is about as QB friendly as the Bad New Bears'...and Skelton the only man still standing...

Whisenhunt cannot bring himself to name Skelton the starter...says that Skelton has had no reps with the first team (you would think that with as piss poor as the QB situation was this year that even Rex Hadnot or even Tommy the ballboy would have gotten at least a look-see...but there are reasons why the toughest QB by far on the roster did not get one snap with the first team, because Whisenhunt's "great" practices are bikini contests...they are pitifully soft, which is why the 49ers rip the Cardinals' heads off, by contrast...which is why you can actually believe a 180 pound Max Hall in shorts can look the part of the starter...too bad that the games aren't two-hand touch, because once he was put in a game, you actually had to fear for Hall's life---honestly---didn't you find yourself worrying about that?)...yeah the coach says that Skelton had no reps and thus there was a 5 day determination as to whether Skelton or UFL backup QB Richard Bartel, signed on that Monday, would start the next game. Unreal.

Utterly unfathomable.

But wait a second...Skelton had to imply to the media that the coaches told him his "chances were good" that he'd start. Wink, wink.

Wow.

So he does start...and what does he do? Despite the coaches, he helps lead the team to a win...and not only that...for the first time since Kurt Warner was taking a horrendous bludgeoning by the Saints, taking a licking and as tough as he was, keeping on ticking...there was a Cardinal QB on the screen who actually didn't look scared out of his mind.

Not bad for a nobody worth earning any previous reps.

Hey it was easy to overlook this kid...he's 6'5" 240 pounds, can run around and make plays and will even lower his shoulder on you when he bolts from the pocket...in fact, he will even fight tooth and nail to stop a defender from scoring on a tipped pass...

Yeah, he's easy to overlook, when the practices are wet bikini contests.

You all saw what happened from there...

Here Skelton was on Christmas night and despite the defense rolling over as they always do whenever collars get tight...he picks the team up even to the point of converting a 4th and 15...and finds a way to put the game in the leg of Jay Feely who, like Dominoes' Pizza, delivers!

It was a moment's reprieve from a nightmare of a season....at a wonderful time when we even pray and think there's a chance for peace on earth.

"I swear it's not too late." RIP John Lennon.

So what happens a week and a half later?

We learn at halftime, despite the fact that Skelton rebounded from a first-class pounding in the first quarter to throw darts between bracketed WRs to bring the team back into the game...that Whisenhunt was "not pleased with Skelton's play early in the game..."

Then after the defense does its customary folding act, and Skelton is running plays that quite frankly were predictable and poorly timed---

Skelton is replaced by the street FA who nearly won the job in Week 13, a mere one day into the job.

Boy oh boy...I mean, what the freaking fidge...instead of rewarding Skelton by maintaining a faith in him, the modus operandi was to hey let's see what someone else can do.

Yesterday, while Whisenhunt was supposeldly being honest for the first time all year with players who underchieved in games...Skelton...standing alone by himself...did what any self-respecting competitor should do...he told the meadia that he hated to be pulled out the way he was and that at the very least HE believed he earned at least a shot at the starting job in 2011.

You really think Skelton---after the way Whisenhunt treated him---has a chance in hell playing for this coach?

At least Skelton has courage...and the right mentality.

This coach is a non-commital coward.

And when you tell the team and the media that the close losses are harder to take than the blowouts---that says it all---no wonder his players oblige him. Hey it's easier to deal with a blowout loss---hey, you just get mad for a seond and get over it in a hurry.

That is the biggest loser's mentality there ever is...and this is one of the many reasons why the coach is toast...guaranteed by this time next year.

Think the players really respect Mr. Soft?

They'd rather just suffer an embarrassing loss and take it easy on him.

Don't worry John and Mr. Skelton---wait it out another year. Support is on the way.

Where did the soft practice thing come from? Mitch have you seen any of the practices? And somehow the jerky egomaniacal Whiz let Warner control the offense with Haley, but had no input?

I just flashed to that scene in "The Waterboy" when LT tells the kids to not smoke crack after Sandler talks.

Whiz isn't going anywhere.

I'd love to see someone answer this question.

I'd also love for one of the Haley guys to answer why the offense was, for lack of a better word... WHIZZING along the second half of the season in 2007 when Wiz was still calling plays in his first season as coach... and then continued to do so last year without Haley.

I mean, people DO realize that Haley called plays only during one season, right? A year where we won only 9 games and then rode the greatest of circumstances to the Super Bowl, right?

Yes, and elsewhere on ASFN today, we have people saying Haley should be fired in Kansas City because he is an idiot.

I suppose you think Bill Belichick is a non-commital coward and horrible coach because of all the times he refused to come right out and say whether or not Brady would play when he had a lingering injury?

I could list off examples of nearly every coach in the NFL being "non-committal cowards." That is the nature of the NFL, especially with the media microscope. Coaches who don't do that quickly become mocked as liars when they change their minds and go back on what they told the media. What's worse than a non-committal coward, is a coach who makes emotional knee-jerk decisions like Dennis Green did. It's ridiculous, when a coach wins, he's savvy, and a genius. When he does the exact some thing and loses, he's a non-committal coward.

It's easy to trash someone when they fail and praise them when they succeed, Mitch. What's not easy is stepping away from emotional outbursts and being objective.

Objectively speaking, Whiz made a lot of poor decisions this year, but has made tons of great ones in the past. I remember when most posters here was so mad at him when he started bringing Warner in for the 2 minute drill when Matt wasn't getting it done. We all know how great a COACHING decision that was in hindsight.

Whiz gets at least another half season to progress this team before anyone should objectively call him toast. If Bill Walsh can come off a SB win and have a 3 win season the next year, why can't Whiz go from 10-6 to 5-11 once?

I couldn't figure why he would yank Skelton after everything he was showing. Skelton played extremely well for a rookie, his only turnover in that game was off a tipped pass. Not a DA style interception mind you, but a tipped pass that the defense gotta hold of.

Whiz pulls QBs in and out, I get that. Whiz can be successful with an awesome QB that can audible, I get that too.

That was jacked up pulling Skelton out. Did Whiz promise what's his name some time on the field if he came to the Cards? Is that what we have become?

Most QBs are happy to sign with most NFL teams, why didn't one of the better scrubs from the scrub league sign with us after DA and Hall bit the dust.

Whiz gets another year to right the ship and he does deserve it. He did after all get Skelton here, I just wish he would have left him in there.

Whiz never made adjustments this year, same plays as game 1, most of them in shotgun. When any other OC would have game planned their play call around our rookie QBs and DA utter crappiness. He needs a OC from the out side world to come in and re-boot this mess.

Only real difference in my stance is I don't see Whiz changing anything. I see us not making the play-offs next year and that hurts to type. Nice write up Mitch, I imagine others will not agree with it the way I do, but hang in there. :)

I have read your posts for several years. Have you ever been to a practice? Do you have an insider feeding you information ? I guess what I'm saying is that its amusing that you write your long diatribes and I find them interesting but I also realize that you really don't have a clue what you are talking about. The length of a post doesn't make it true. Interesting reading maybe but most of it is total speculation to get attention. Thousands of miles seperate you from this team and what is going on with them just like me. You don't know whats going on with them any more than I do or anyone else does.

Mitch, I love your writing, and agree with most of it, but you've really gone off the deep end with this Whiz stuff.

Am I the only one that heard the 'radio' broadcast of the game? At the beginning, they mentioned that Skelton would likely be pulled at some point so that the coaches could see Bartell in live action. When Skelton was pulled, the reaction was that this was to be expected since it was the LAST game of the year without any playoff ramification.

I really don't understand all the wailing about this particular event.

The only reason I can think of was they wanted to let Bartell have one 1/4 of playing time before he's released.

You don't have to agree with Mitch's points to be able to conclude that Whiz should be fired based on his poor performance with a team which finished last in an incredibly weak division, got blown out in some games and looked lack luster in others. His comments quoted in the AZ Republic today show he is not fit to be a HC.

One bad year after two straight playoff appearances is not enough reason to fire him.

Why would Whiz do this in the first place, did he draft Bartel? Does he really need to see if Bartel "has it"? Come on, Skelton is learning from every snap and has shown good possibilities.
We saw what Bartel would do in there while wasting valuable time for Skelton to learn from. No reason to do it, whether it was planned or not, same with Whiz hating on Skelton after not giving him protection the whole first quarter.

I just think it was another bone headed QB move by Whiz. Mitch got me all riled up again.:madarms:

:D
marginally bone-headed at best. Unless he didn't like what Skelton was doing. Seems to me Leinart struggled at times against blitzes in the preseason and look what Whiz did to him. :)

My God, they had a bad year, it happens. You can freak out and panic or keep a cool head and hit it again next year.

If he doesn't like what he has seen in Skelton enough to throw :barf:in a scrub that rode the bench in scrub land, well then...Houston... we have a problem, and probably another QB to give you. (I am done now :))

If taking the Cardinals to the super bowl doesn't buy you one season, what does it buy?
