Best Player Available -- On Defense.

I'm not a big fan of Alex Smith and I wouldn't waste a #8 on the QBs available or on a RB.

Henry is irrelevant, if Green thinks Brown is the best player at 8 he will take him. That's his entire philosophy on the draft, take the best player.

I would first look to trade down with San diego. They would trade if Johnson is on the board. As much as everyone likes Johnson I still would not pick him if we could garner a 2nd round pick and go down 4 spots. I would then take 12. Heath Miller. 44. Dave Baas 60. Justin Tuck 4th Rd. Maurice Clarett 5th Albert Means. If we do not trade down then we take Ronnie Brown or Johnson. This can change if we get a TE in FA. Then we have to consider Barron at 12. and Marlin Jackson in the 2nd.

San diego wants a WR not a LB or am I misunderstanding your post? By most accounts they're looking to package their picks to move up and get Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards. Although they might be able to stand pat and get Mark Clayton or Troy Williamson AND another player.

I had read that they do not want to move up or trade their two number one picks. They stated they have had too much trouble in the past trying to sign their top picks (when they were in the top five).

Sign me up for Johnson. I believe he's the best player avalible with the number 1 as well. (Craaaazzzzy).

I want Matt Roth here as well.

And with the Raiders giving Porter a brand new deal, they may wait till the 2nd round now to get a WR to pair with Porter, hence Edwards or Williams falling to us at #8 and SD trying to trade up to our spot now before the REdskins snag one of them.

If we do aquire Henry and a long term extention is not reached, we still would be in a weak situation at RB (IMO).
So, I would go with following priorities on the first day of the draft;
Round one; 1A LB - Johnson, 1B CB - Rolle, 1C RB - Brown, 1D RB - Williams.
Round two; 2A RB - Faison, 2B OG's - Brown or Baas, 2C - DT Castillo, CB - Browner.
Round three; 3A TE - Everett, 3B RB - Houston, 3C S - Butler, 3D CB - McFadden

However, free agency aquisitions would change this. :stick:

Could be, but San Diego papers have been speculating they want to move up to get Williams.

That's right. But if Ronnie Brown's not there, I'm not sure that he'll have Cedric Benson or Carnell Williams as high. If Heath Miller runs a 4.60 40 or better, he'll be in the Top 10, and Adam Pac Man Jones will be in a good place if he runs somewhere between 4.40 and 4.45 at his campus workout (if he runs a sub-4.40 40, he'll be a Top 3 pick). Derrick Johnson would be a luxury pick here, but if he's available, he might be too good to pass up.

One person that I don't think will be that high on Green's board is Antrelle Rolle. After he runs a 4.65 40 at the Combine, his stock is going to be as overrated on this board as Chris Gamble's was last year.

Certainly possible although trading down in this draft has pace/johnson written all over it . I keep reading Tampa is actively pursuing a WR too but they're looking at guys like Burress as well as drafting one.

BPA. That could include (a) one of the RB's or (b) one of a few wideouts but more likely (c) PacMan, Rolle or Williams or (d) someone on Rod's and Dennis' boards but not on our radar screen - like, for example, Ware or conceivably one of the 2 highly rated QB's.

You know what Jeff, you might be right about a guy like Ware. Calvin Pace holds that key. Pace had 4.5 sacks last year in a VERY limited role. Green has stated Pace need to get stronger. He should already have started his off season regimen.
That being said we need s presence on the other bookend for Berry. I think Pace could be that guy, but if he hasn't proved it by draft day, Ware just might be the guy we take.

Bulked up Ware is still about 250 pounds and most scouts still have him listed as an OLB who may move to DE. If Pace can't hold up at his weight it's unlikely Green will use the 8th pick on a guy who's even smaller. Ware was 220 2 years ago and played this year at 235, he's currently listed between 245 and 250.

I'm not sure it's good for a kid to put on weight THAT fast although he is a big guy who still has his speed.

He's intriguing but I think Merriman is pretty universally rated ahead of Ware.

DeMarcus Ware from Troy State, one of the fast risers. Gone from 220 to 250 in about 2 years, supposedly still runs a 4.55 40 and has a 38" vertical. He and Merriman from Maryland are the 2 "freak" athletes moving up boards if you listen to guys like Scouts inc.

Thanks Russ...

I don't see them taking an OLB/DE tweener to play DE or a pass rush DE either. They need a stout run stuffing 6-8 sack a year guy on the strong side...ala Kevin Carter or Marcus Spears (LSU). I think Pace is back next year as the back-up to Berry.
