COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lady Vols basketball is returning to the Sweet 16.
No. 5 seed Tennessee (24-9) will face either No. 1 seed Texas or No. 8 seed Illinois on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Longhorns and Fighting Illini play at 2 p.m. ET Monday in Austin, Texas.
The Lady Vols played the Longhorns on the road and lost 80-76 on Jan. 23. It was the only game this season they played without Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell, who did not travel due to giving birth to her son on Jan. 20.
The Lady Vols upset No. 4 seed Ohio State on Sunday at Schottenstein Center to advance. Tennessee won 82-67, led by 19 points from Talaysia Cooper, who added eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Zee Spearman had 17 points and five rebounds, and Ruby Whitehorn added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
This is Tennessee's third trip to the Sweet 16 in the last four seasons. They made two straight trips in 2022-23 before bowing out in the second round last season.
Tennessee will face either No. 1 seed Texas or No. 8 seed Illinois in the Sweet 16 in Birmingham on Saturday.
