Mention the Arizona offense and the names Matt Leinart, Larry Fitzgerald, Edgerrin James and Anquan Boldin come to mind. But the real reason the Cardinals are 1-1 and threatening to challenge in the NFC West may be the offensive line. Thanks to head coach Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach Russ Grimm, who coaches the offensive line, this group is playing with more aggression, better technique and has been more impressive than any Cardinals line in recent memory.
LT Mike Gandy, who came to Arizona from Buffalo, is an athletic tackle who has good feet and times up his punches well in pass protection to keep separation from opposing defensive ends. There are two rookies on the offensive line -- RT Levi Jones and C Lyle Sendlein -- but they have been playing like veterans, which is rare for offensive lineman this early in the season. Jones is a beast coming off the ball and doesn't make many mistakes for a rookie. Rookie tackles have a tendency to under set a defensive end or bite on a two-move pass rush. Jones has done a solid job of not committing either act on important third-down situations. The only negative on Sendlein so far is that he tends to spend too much time on double-team blocks and doesn't get up to the linebacker level in time. That is something that Grimm will correct. The other two linemen are RG Deuce Lutui, who is in his second year, and LG Reggie Wells, who is in his fourth season in the NFL. Both are big, talented players who keep defensive tackles close to the line of scrimmage in pass protection.
