The Pats game will be the time for our WRs and TEs to step up and fill-in for Fitz.
TE Dan Arnold (and/or Williams/Daniels) might be the best fit for the Fitz role based on his TE blocking and his large target size. Fitz plays a vital role as a blocker and as the 5-to-10 yard possession guy. Fitz is averaging about 5 targets per game so his blocking role will be as important to fill as his targets/catches. Fitz has not been putting up the yards—most of the yards that would go to him are being accomplished by KM runs. If KM is limited in his runs, our Fitz replacement should be ready for more targets, more yards. Arnold at 6'6" and 220 lbs. might work as a WR and a taller Fitz. Arnold should be the best target for K2 across the middle based on his height and speed to play the slot. We shouldn’t expect either Kirk or Isabella to do the heavy blocking for an entire game or to be a visible slot target in the middle.
I don’t know enough about the current Pats D and if they still assign their best DB to shadow the opposing best WR. In the past, Gilmore did lock on to Nuk during his time with the Texans with fair success holding him to under 100 yards per game—that will be a great match-up for K2 and KK to solve. It also looks to nullify or at least keep Nuk under control in the passing game.
This game is also one where both Kirk and Isabella need to seize the day and show why they are Round 2 draft picks. Need catches and yards from both—and a long strike or two. When a presence like Fitz goes out of the lineup it becomes a showcase for someone else to shine. K2 needs to scheme for both to have heavy involvement with Fitz gone and Nuk covered by one of the best Dbs in the game. KM needs to show that he can develop a chemistry with Isabella and, to a lesser extent, with Kirk. KM played for a year with Kirk in college so we have a right to expect more yardage from this connection. We need more production from our pair of #2 picks. Both need to show that they are worthy of the high value placed on them by SK. If Isabella was brought in to be the deep threat in K2's Air Raid passing scheme, he needs to get a few more targets. He still needs to be out there to stretch the field with his speed and decoy the DBs, but that will only work if he is also a receiving threat. Kirk was drafted as a potential Fitz replacement. We need to see him approach 1,000 yd/year status for that 2nd round pick to meet expectations.
At least one needs to have that 100+ yard, two TD game that says ‘I’m here!’
