Who/What band would define this decade's music?

When people discuss 50s music, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry..etc.. come to mind.....60s...The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Supremes.etc... 70s, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Disco...etc....80s... Madonna, U2, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi..etc... 90s...Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, STP, Alice-in-Chains, Pearl Jam..etc...

I know that I've posted several messages with this reoccurring theme on how today's music is such in a sad-state.... I know we're only 4-years of this decade, however, does any of these bands that exist today will carry any clout or make a general impact when referring to this decade's worth of music in the future? I dont know to be honest......

There must be some visionary who creates an entirely new sound/genre before this decade is over or the music industry will forever be going down a major abyss.... "A savior"... Just like how The Beatles salvaged music in the 60s (took awhile for music to somewhat rebound after "the Day the Music Died")...or the Punk and New Wave bands that rescued Music after the collapse of the Disco movement...or Grunge bands that surfaced after the "Hair Bands" began to implode.....There has to be something on the horizon....

I guess what defines this decade's music thus far is the impact/influx of bands from Europe (especially England) and the Indi music scene....

IMO, what's defining this decades music in pop is the death & destruction of good bands like U2 & No Doubt, and the rise of the over-the-top eye candy line of "artists" (the Simpson girls, B. Spears, C. Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, etc.) that can't even sing their parts live and rely on backing tracks.

For rock, I see American rock disintegrating. It really peaked around 1970, and ever since it has been getting worse and worse. The good bands of the 70s led to the over-the-top musicians and cheesy music of the 80s, which led to the anti-musician backlash "grunge" in the 90s, and now because record companies can't sell artists anymore, the only mainstream "rock" you see is lowest-common-denominator music like Nickelback, Staind, and Puddle of Mudd.

The true music is as it always was... underground. Everything else is fluff. I think the only good "mainstream" band that's still kicking is the Foo Fighters.

Of course that's only my opinion, I could be wrong. If you look overseas, the band that's poised to strike at any time right now in rock is Nightwish. Their new album "Once" is the best rock/metal album in years IMO, and they've just been picked up by Roadrunner Records in the US. I expect good things from them in the near future, but alas, they'll never be mainstream either.

I wouldnt necessarily "lump" Staind into the same category as Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd..... At least Aaron Lewis writes with a lot of substance in his lyrics and their songs that sound completely the same.....

With the Foo Fighters....I would have to add Korn and perhaps Live as 2 other mainstream bands that are still "at the top of their game"......

Thanks for the recommendation on Nightwish....I definitely must check them out....

Do you like either Entombed or Iced Earth?

My dad just picked up 4 Iced Earth CD's, have yet to listen.

I think the band to define this decade will be tool (biased biased biased) They already released one of the greatest CD's ever in "Lateralus" in 2000 and another CD is coming out this year.

Or just Maynard Keenan himself...it's amazing how he's managed to achieve quite success and innovation with two bands during the same period..... There are some songs I prefer by A Perfect Circle over some of his output w/Tool.....

Another band would be NIN (IE Trent Reznor).... How much of a genius Trent is ... is simply amazing and I'm looking forward to their new album which is due out later this Spring....Someone else who never sold out to "conventionalism/commercialism"......

I'm serious though....We can't forget "Mambo #5" and "Tricky Tricky".... those songs opened-up a floodgate of a new generation of music that should never be forgotten....

Your Next American Idol Is ... Barbie?
02.18.2005 2:42 PM EST

Mattel's plastic princess sings 'Oops! ... I Did It Again' in a bid for the title.

Things continue to look up for Barbie since she ditched Ken, her jobless, commitment-phobic boyfriend of 43 years.

Not content with simply running for president last year (see "Dollitics '04: Plastic Politicians And Tiny Terrorists"), Barbie has decided to shoot for the coveted title of "American Idol." The Mattel toy company gave the plastic icon a welcome fit for a superstar when it unveiled the doll at the New York Toy Fair on Thursday with the help of real-life American Idol Fantasia Barrino.

"I think an 'Idol' is someone that you can look up to, someone who carries herself in a way that people will look up to her," Barrino said in a statement.

Having held more than 90 careers, including rock star and Air Force pilot, Barbie has certainly branded herself as a role model. Now, decked in a denim micro-miniskirt, leg warmers and a hot pink tie-dye top, with Britney Spears' "Oops! ... I Did It Again" as her chosen song, Barbie hopes to be officially named "American Idol" by her fans.

But first, she'll have to beat pals Simone and Tori for the title. Sporting a fringed skirt, feather boa and her "lucky wrist cuff," Simone has chosen "Ladies Night" as her song. Tori, the rock chick who hopes to start her own label someday, gets tough in her pinstriped pants and patchwork blue top and belts out "What I Like About You."

More than 700,000 Barbie fans have voted for their favorite in a poll on the Barbie Web site, and a winner will be announced on April 1.

Complete 'Idol' Coverage
No matter who wins, Barbie and her friends will get their own "American Idol" Show Stage this spring, complete with a dressing room where they can touch up their signature sassy styles and a performance area where they can belt out their chosen tracks for adoring fans. In the fall, aficionados can emulate the 12-inch icon with the Rockin' Recording Studio, which allows them to record their own music on a working FM radio.

Should Barbie win the coveted spot, however, she'll be able to ditch that old Barbie Dream Car and cruise around town in a brand new Mustang Convertible. Who needs Ken when you've got Simon on your side?

Get "Idol"-ized on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

I bet she's more talented than Britney, Christine, and the Simpson sisters combined! :D

If one more of NIN albums were released in 2000's it would be better but weren't most released in the 90's? The Downward Spiral and The Fragile.

True... but they've had several compilation cds and contributed to quite a few soundtracks this decade.... Also... Reznor has had a major impact w/his production talents......

Have you checked-out that band I recommended under another thread, Kasabian? I bet you'll enjoy them......

"The Fragile" is awesome.....

If you havent checked out NIN's official site recently, they actually have a brief sampling from their new c.d. that's due out in the early spring.....I can't wait.....

Whenever you do check-out Kasabian, please let me know and tell me what you think under the thread I recommended them.... I listened to their entire c.d. nonstop earlier today... http://www.kasabian.co.uk/album

I was going to post about what to me are the 10 most important albums of this decade so far, however, I remembered this thread....

I've given this a considerable amount of thought.....I would say these following bands will define this decade's music when we're all ushering in 2010.....

This isnt in any particular order:

1) the Strokes
2) the White Stripes
3) Radiohead
4) Interpol
5) Supergrass
6) Kasabian
7) Louis XIV
8) Gomez
9) Franz Ferdinand
10) Modest Mouse

There are probably a few others, but I think they'll be among those whenever someone reflects back on 2000-2009, that these bands will be mentioned the most.... I wouldnt be shocked if any one of the ASFN musicians might be all included in the same breath along with those others....

Tool. Lateralus (2001) and whenever there next CD comes out. A Perfect Circle also.

Yeah....I would have to agree with that because Maynard does an impressive job of combining an interesting mix of a prog/alternative metal sound with some of the darkest lyrics ever, so he definitely will be revered...

I'll tell you this... I just have this vision that the next albums by Radiohead, the Strokes, Supergrass, and Tool will revolutinalize music, and will be the ones that other bands will copy/mimic....Either of those will be the "Sgt. Pepper" or "Nevermind" of this decade...just cant wait (especially for Radiohead)....

This is probably waaaay to pre-mature, but I'm really liking what I'm hearing from Shinedown. They have a few songs that sound "fresh" and inspiring.

If you haven't already...take a listen to:
1. "Fly From the Inside"
2. "Burning Bright"
3. "45"
4. "Simple Man" (Cover of Lynard Skynard)

Their singer has killer "rock" pipes and a cool stage presence. Old school attitude...reminds me of Axle Rose, but a much better singer.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see these guys go to the top with a couple more albums under their belt.

I've never heard of them before, so thanks for pointing them out... I'll listen to it by tomorrow and will report back how I feel regarding them...

Just wonderig if you'd be interested in doing a week of "Album-a-Day"?

The defining band of this decade will probably be Linkin Park. Easily the best rock/rap band since Rage Against the Machine. Love 'em or hate 'em they're the only band of that genre that that's still going strong. The others have either faded away or changed their sound to a new style. I also can't think of another new rock band that has been more successfull so far.
