To those of you who are wondering why BJ looks slow out there I'll tell you why. He is slow. DG talked about him being the deep threat yet he was the second slowest receiver on the team during the combine that DG ran this offseason and that was BEFORE he missed all of training camp with a foot injury. He is going to continue to disappoint as a deep threat and probably as a receiver in general. Unlike Fitz who is no speed burner himself he doesn't seem to be physical enough to go up and get the ball when he doesn't have separation. I just don't buy into all the talk of this dynamic trio at WR. Boldin is a proven commodity who now unfortunately has had 2 major knee injuries. Fitz is a rookie who has made some spectacular catches but it looks like he's making those due to the fact that he is being covered like a blanket with no separation and BJ has been singularly unimpressive since he got here.

BJ is a bigger bust than Pace atm because Pace isnt taking up a place on the field when he isnt ready to be a starter. Johnson is.

It is really hard to get seperation against New England. They play bump and run and blitz all the time. You have no time to let a play develop.

The way you counter that is to run screens, but unfortunately we threw 1 screen pass which ended up getting like 50 yards.

Johnson will be an outstanding 3 WR.

This team is going to have to bite the bullet and invest in a speed receiver. 3 possession receivers isn't going to cut it in this league.... Boldin and Fitz aren't going any where soon.... Johnson is the odd man out.

here we go... 1 year and the guy is a bust?

Who was so down on Pace in the preseason after 1 year?

Come on clif be fair.

i don't think we can give up on JOhnson yet.

CMack can you post the results of this Combine? You seem to be the only one who knows what happened, officially I believe the Cards deny they had one, Jim O even said so, but you keep mentioning it so you must have an inside source?

I myself would like to see what Newhouse can do as the 3rd reciever instead of Williams. I thought he made some things happen in the pre-season, unlike almost everyone else.

We should have drafted R. Williams :)

Hate to say I told you so, but Roy Williams always seemed the better need filler on this team for me. 3 slow receivers won't get it done.

Roy has looked like R O the Y so far.

I hate this thread because:
1 - BJ is coming off an injury - give him a break!
2 - He put up decent (not spectacular) -decent #'s last year.
3 - As fans, a lot of us got too pumped up and drank the koolaide this offseason.

be fair.. I am being fair... I never said pace was a bust. I recall saying he had an abdominal injury and did not participate in OTA's and that was why he was on the bench... then he came out and stated he was questioning his confidence and I said he was not presenting a mentality to overcome the situation and maybe we may need to move him around. so if you are trying to say I was not being fair then you are wrong.

That's what I thought.

Wasn't he the fourth most productive rookie WR last year (on a team that the most productive)?

You all but said cut him, in fact I think you did say cut him more than once when the rumor was he was going to be cut.

So if one year is too early to give up on BJ, why wasn't it too early for you to give up on Pace?

That's what I meant by fair, I should have said consistent.

Andre Johnson beat him too.

Still he's from Penn State and those receivers never do a thing their first year. He's practically all world when you consider where he came from.

He missed time in camp and he just got back from injury. He is slow because he couldn't run for several weeks.

He will be fine and I'm sure if he was in top shape he'd outrun all our receivers, but that isn't saying much now is it since none of them are fast.

BTW, if you would like to look back on this years draft the crime is that we didn't draft Roy Williams.

He will be an absolute deep threat catch everything stud. I would predict he'll have very favorable numbers to Fitz and he's a deep threat.

This is one case where I think DG knowing Fitz is really going to hack me off because I follow the Big 12 and Roy Williams played for a team that really never used him like he should have been.

He is the REAL DEAL!!!!!

I am not buying into the Roy Williams hype just yet.

Outside of a couple ot TD's his numbers arent any better than Fitz and he obviously plays on a better team!

Let it die already.

Te real crime was not drafting a real QB when we had the chance!

hey there were several of us making that precise argument before the draft. I felt the best player ultimately would be Sean Taylor, but if we were locked into taking a WR to make the 3WR set work, I wanted Roy or Mike Williams, not Fitz. When Mike was ruled out, I wanted Roy.

My main reason was as you said, he has the deep speed we lack, Fitz is going to be a very good maybe even great WR, but he's too similar to Quan he won't give us the deep threat Roy will give Detroit. Of course in my scenario we would have moved down since 3 was too high to pick Roy, and then you take the risk someone takes him before you can.

he was the 7th player taken so to get him we could have only traded with Washington at 5, or Cleveland(from Detroit) at 6, and likely it would have had to be Washington.

Bottom line is Green was only considering one WR and he knows enough about Fitz that I'm willing to give him some leeway there for now. Fitz is certainly not doing poorly on a pace for 72 catches for nearly 900 yards with a crappy OL and a young QB. But I do still have the same concern that he's not quick enough or fast enough and we'll need to ultimately add such a player to open this offense up.

I said all along I was hoping Oakland would take Fitz so that we'd never have to face the decision of Green passing on him for someone else.

Again though too early to say, he wouldn't be the first great WR to not have sprinters speed.

As recently as last year, Detroit was a laughing stock, so comparing the Lions to the Cards as a better team might not be the case. Lions have gotten better while drafting Harrington, Rogers, Williams, K. Jones et al. Cards got Pace , W. Bryant, B. Johnson, Fitz. Lions 2-0. Cards 0-2.

Right now I would switch the last drafts with the Lions.

detroit is only slightly better than us if that. They have upgraded their OL in the last 2 years. Jones hasn't done anything at RB, Rogers is out again, the big difference so far is Harrington is completing a higher %, and surprisingly taking more sacks, he's been sacked 4 times in 2 games after only 17 sacks in his first 30 NFL games.I haven't seen them play but I'm assuming he's learned that he was throwing the ball away TOO quickly, which lowered his % and now he's giving his WR's more time to get open and as a result, he' scompleting more. Just a guess haven't seen him play yet.

Williams is for real, not a superstar mind you but Mariucci has already said he's the most physically gifted WR he's seen come into the league since Moss. If he can stay healthy and learn he's going to be a great one. People forget, during his freshman year at Texas everyone from Kiper to Brandt pegged him the best NFL prospect in the country, as Conrad said he basically played for a coach who squandered him in college, Mariucci won't do that.
