I've been trying to remember how long I've been aware of the whole Bush part of this. Pretty sure it was pre-2006 because a lot of people knew and were talking about it in So Cal. SC has believed the rules don't apply to them for years and years and years. I'm thrilled they got nailed.

I listen to Petros and Money almost every day and the Laker game pre-empted the show yesterday before Petros called in from Hawaii so I missed his response.

You sound like a listener so let me ask you this: do you think it's just a coincidence that Petros' younger brother went to UCLA last year rather than USC where Petros and their dad both played?

I think the restaurant thing is pretty minor in the big picture. I really doubt that potential recruits were swayed one way or the other by being taken to dinner. Technically, a violation but were they only wining and dining recruits and big-named players or were USC guys invited because of the family's connection to the team as well as Petros being a media member.

I'm working with a lack of information on this point but it seems feasible to me that having USC guys as guests of the restaurant isn't anything that was meant to be underhanded.

I didn't hear it I saw the transcript online. I don't think it's a big deal either, it's an example of why the NCAA said lack of Institutional Control. They were told in 2006 by reporters that it was a violation, and 4 years later he claims they didn't know it was. That's an example of arrogance, they knew they were breaking a rule they just figured nobody would ever do anything.

I don't know about his brother.

Russ, I respect your opinion but I think its naive to think the same things that happened at SC doesn't happen at OU, Texas, Georgia, Bama, Florida, LSU and many other "big time" football programs.

Oh it does, players get paid all over. What I'm saying is those programs don't allow agents in their locker room the way Pete Carroll did. OU got nailed for the Rhett Bomar phony job thing which was similar to the Reggie Bush internship, the difference was Bush was working for a marketing agent who markets professional athletes, and it was arranged by the coach Pete Carroll, not some booster like at OU. That's worse to me when the coach is participating that much.

YOu ask most UCLA fans about Winston Justice and they'll tell you he was verballed to UCLA and then suddenly he signed with USC. Weeks after he signed the whole family went on an elaborate vacation to somewhere like Tahiti, when Justice returned, he had a new car. When he got busted soliciting a prostitute, the police report mentions the car, when USC got investigated they said they found no evidence he had such a car. Had they asked for the police report it had the make, model year and license plate right on it. The LA Times photographed that exact car in the USC practice field parking lot when Justice was there. But none of that is proof USC paid Winston Justice and that's why it's not in the report. They could have gotten nailed much worse but cash transactiosn are hard to prove, that's why it's done with cash.

The NCAA nailed USC because it was so obvious there was no control, and that was largely due to Pete Carroll's attitude.

As a Trojan I love it. USC defiant and arrogant to the end. We are SC.....and everyone else isn't.

People, myself included, have been wanting Garrett gone even before the **** hit the fan, and I think he will be replaced when the new president is formally installed. Garrett really seems to have jumped the shark last night.

We'll see what the appeal process brings. Maybe now UCLA will finally be able to compete with a "level" playing field.

In football not likely. I'm not a huge Neuheisel fan he had his own past, and it sounds like the Chow/Neuheisel situation isn't going well, UCLA has missed on several big name QB recruits. now if USC loses one of them and UCLA gets him that could change things, but right now UCLA still needs a QB and 2 good classes to catch up to USC.

Garrett didn't do his job as AD, football the pressure to win was there and once it started rolling I can see what happened. The problem with basketball was that they were desperate to put a winning team out there because of Galen and they basically sold their soul to get that winning team. I know a reporter who covered that team for a few years and he literally had people in the athletic department tell him that they had intentionally lowered the academic standards for basketball because they hadn't fully paid off Galen yet and needed to sell seats and the best way to do that was to have a great team.

He's certainly not the only AD who's ever done that, far from it, but most of them step down or get fired long before it gets to this point. It's almost like he's so hated by USC alums that they intentionally kept him there to have someone to blame at the end.

That's a good point Russ. Whether intentional or not, Garrett will likely be scapegoated when Nikias becomes president.

As I said devil, thinking the SC case is unique is naive in my mind. Many of college football coaches might say they don't know about agents or boosters that "hang around" big time players, "taking care" of them, but reality says most of the guys know whats going on. Great players bring in lots of cash to all programs. I would almost bet my life that many, many big-time college football players are getting cars, houses & cash for themselves & their families that people never find out about.
BTW Bush denied all the accusations many, many times.

not true Youd actually be suprised how many coaches out there not only police themselves but there fellow coaches and atheltic departments. Sure there are some scum bags out there but most all programs are clean and most coaches have complete control over their teams. Not only on the filed but off.

I felt the way you did until I got close to several college programs.

Over/under 5 major programs?

I'd say under. But I'm jaded by humanity, so I'll always assume the worst.

You're right, even the cleanest of programs has boosters who are doing things behind the scenes, it's unavoidable. There's always the teacher who gives free grades to athletes, the tutors who are doing work for the student etc.

The key for USC is they didn't have the right controls in place to catch that stuff and they allowed an atmosphere where that stuff was tolerated.

I'm expecting at least one if not more investigations of other schools as a result of that one. If you look at the report while they don't name him, Michael Beasley is pretty prominent in there and its openly mentioned that the friend of OJ Mayo(Beasley) asked Floyd to pay him to go to USC. They of course didn't and he went to K State so I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA isn't already looking into that.

Karma will catch them all.The amount of kids busted for taking tests and attending classes for athletes is just out of control.I'm ashamed of the proffessors who are aware but just turn a blind eye if not on the payola end themselves.

Continueing to not pay college athletes as all the schools are playing musical chairs for a few extra million in this dying economy. The amount made by the bigtime schools is just too much to risk.Hate it had to take down Bobby Bowden by him not having a handle on it and trusting the better angels of humanity.

College footballs map will become a JOKE after the map is re-written this and next season.Money changes everything. Its not pretty to watch.I'm embarrassed myself watching it happen day in and day out.

I too think Reggie Bush needs to be the first to lose his Heisman. The penalties could and should have been worse.Mike Garrett is making a fool of himself. Can't see him getting a job coaching a middle school team. Its getting ugly.USC needs to be quiet and take their medicine the long party is over.

Glad we get to put two "L's" on carrols record every year he lasts. He's not in Belicheats areacode.Maybe the college equivilent only.Paul Allen will have a short leash.Like he did with Mora.

I watched Carroll's video over the weekend where he looked right at the camera and said he was "absolutely shocked". Somebody needs to get that man back down south and hand him an Oscar.

I think the bigger unanswered question remains: "What happens now?"

Will this have any impact on Carroll's credibility with his players in Seattle? Or will it simply fade away or buried beneath of the pile of more pressing day-to-day things pro players think about?
