Maybe you need to go back and watch the game, the first TD was Brown's fault. The one that you call Big's fault was an impossible block to make, Travis Hall cutting in could not be blocked by Big from where he was set up.

Who said anything about the first TD?

I did just rewatch the tape. It appears that Travis Hall should have been blocked by Elton Brown; however, Elton side-steps him and moves downfield to take on any LB's that might be coming in. Leonard Davis has to step over to Elton's slot to downblock Travis as he is comes through the line. Leonard whiffs, Marcell gets hit in the backfield and fumbles, 49er TD.

I do not think Elton missed his block. To me, it appears that the blocking scheme called for Davis to have to make the difficult block, a huge mistake. Again, as I said earlier, hopefully when Loney mentioned that he won't ask players to do things they aren't capable of, this is what he meant.

It's not a slam on Big (even though he had a dreadful 1st qtr in that game). You said yourself that it is an impossible block for Leonard to make.

Go Cards!!!

In your original post you said "Big whiffed for the second time in a row," so what were you talking about there? If the Travis Hall block was the second "whiff" then when was the first? Also, wasn't Wells playing LG and not Elton Brown? You seriously need to watch that tape.

I think Big has a nasty side, but he tends to show it in bad bad spots. Like last year when he punched that Rams safety, earning him a 15 yarder. Or in Preseason when he picked that blocker up (against KC) and threw him on the ground, dissalowing Boldin's TD. He certainly does have a nasty side, which current NFL lineman would you say have great or favorable nasty side(s)?

Current Nasty Linemen
LeCharles Bently (LT)
Steve Hutchinson (G)
Luke Petitgout (DT)

All Time Nasty NFL Linemen
Conrad Dobler
Randy White (DT)
Kevin Gogan (G)

You have to have a bit of nasty in you in order to be great. Walter Jones is the best - no doubt. But I wouldn't categorize him as nasty. He's just a great player. The same goes for Alan Faneca.

Chris Snee and Olin Kreutz are nasty.

I thjink Big is as good as they come, but hasn't shown up in the mental aspect sometimes. I don't think for a moment that he doeesn't want to be all-pro. Moving from position to position is difficult. Yes, even on the line. He's got a new coach, figured to be here at least two years and seems to know what he's doing. All of the variables combined-he has a great year. Will he command top dollar? In all fairness to the organization, only by incentive.
But I damn well wouldn't let him walk.

And neither would I.

Everybody on the board wants so badly for Big to be the best lineman ever, that it makes it more difficult to judge his current performance.

Last year Big had a pretty good year. Above average.

Too many penalties, but his pass protection was great. Run blocking was good.

Does he deserve Walter Jones money at the end of this year? No. But if he improves his game a little in 2006, then we need to offer him serious LT money, because a little improvement would make him a viable candidate for the pro bowl.

Even if he just clunks along like he's been doing, we shouldn't let him walk. Good LTs are just too hard to find.

2nd alternate. Sorry but that in itself was a stretch.
That's a top 5 LT in the NFC with what was supposedly bad OL coaching and schemes. I would take my chances with Davis rather than have some free agent/rookie in the coming years. For one, if a free agent LT hits the open market he's either not that good or he wants way too much money. Secondly, a rookie will take at least 3 years to develop. Also, I think it's kind of funny when people automatically assume just by switching people, like Wells or Brown, over to LT that they'll be able to handle the position. I would like to know what they are basing that on.Because i'm pretty sure if they were better than Big at LT that they would be there playing.

—This shapes up as a big year for "Big."
Everything about Leonard Davis has been big — even his nickname — EXCEPT for his consistency on the field.

But now, with his career at a crossroad and the Arizona Cardinals with a wad of cash available under the salary cap that they're itching to burn on deserving players, Davis has to come through in 2006.

If he does, he can expect an extension offer before the season is complete, according to Rod Graves, vice president of operations.

Maybe he's remembering the Cards extending guys like Ray Thompson and figures the worse he plays the more money he gets.:D

Top-6 in the NFL, right?

Two starters and an alternate for both teams?

No, both squads bring 3 tackles and alternates are the next couple of guys in votes. Big was the second alternate, making him 5th in the NFC.

One thing to consider, Big received little (and I mean little) acclaim in the fan voting. So what got him the alternate spot? The GMs and coaches, who are the guys that really know about O-Lineman voted for him. That shows that he was better than his alternate spot. Fans don't know who to vote for as O-Lineman in the Pro Bowl, they just pick the guys from their team or the guys who went last year.
