I don't understand why everyone suddenly is suggesting trade possibilities with Amare involved. We have a 24 year old superstar and suddenly we want to give that up? For what? The only players I would consider for Amare would be LeBron, Kobe, Carmelo, and Dirk. After that, not many players in the league I would even consider. Paul Pierce, Pau Gasol? Come on... We need a new look, and that new look should be without Shawn Marion. Not Amare Stoudemire.

Rumor mill. There are national commentators who have blown some lockerroom friction into a huge thing and assume the Suns will need to break up the team in response. There is little doubt that Amare is the most attractive player on the team (Nash has the age issue and Marion is too expensive), so they immediately put Amare into play.

Of course, if you read the same commentators, KG, Paul Pierce, and numerous others would have been traded too. They need something to write about and talking about trading a team's superstar is always a good way to generate a response.

Let's remember something about sports writing. They don't think of themselves as journalists but as entertainers. Accuracy is for real journalists who can get fired for making stuff up. By contrast, sports writers live by making stuff up and claiming their nonsense came from "wll placed sources".

Why does anyone believe this stuff? Once in a blue moon some wild rumor turns out to be true. But if you examine the odds, you've got a much much better chance winning at roulette.

I will be pissed if they trade him. He is by far my favorite player in the NBA.

Exactly. If it were up to the media, KG would have been traded 3 years ago.

because most of the people on here dont understand the value Stat has to this team. Even more than an aging Garnett with lots of wear and tear

If it was just one year, KG'd be the guy. He is a really amazing player and much more valuable as a defender. But KG is older and costs a lot more. His contract is $6 million more per year than Amare, which is an extra $12 million due to the luxury tax.

I think that as an organizatio nwe need to think about it like we only have one year left. Nash was complaining about complacency all throughout the season, and I think that with guys like Nash and Garnett that wouldn't be a problem.

?

We already have the chance to win now. In my opinion we were one play away from advancing. If we have Amare, we win game 5...and I like our chances in game 7 at home.

Even with the suspensions...if Barbosa simply plays like he did the regular season, we win the series (he went an unheard of 2-17 from 3 point range). His poor play could have been an injury...or nerves...or lack of confidence...but he's improved every year and I expect him to do much better next year.

Against San Antonio these guys played well enough to win.
Amare: A beast with .500% from the field, .813% from the line, 10.6 reb per game, 2 blocks per game and 26.4 ppg.
Nash: .520% from 3 pt range, 12.7 assists, 21.3 ppg.
Marion: .521% from the field, .471% from 3 pt range, 10.5 rpg, 2.33 bpg, and 15.7 ppg.
KT: As good a defense on Duncan as can be hoped for, .923% from FT line, 6.3 rpg, 1.17 bpg, and 9.7 ppg.
Raja: .500% from the field, .500% from the arc, .900% from the line, 12.5 ppg.

We don't need an overhaul...just better productivity from Barbosa...and Diaw (5.6 ppg).

If the goal is to beat San Antonio (and others) next year...then our draft picks are virtually worthless. No one drafted 24-29 is going to help that much next year as they will all need a few years before their ready to make a significant impact (yes they'll help a little...but not more than a seasoned veteran). I doubt if anyone picked in that range would be able to jump ahead of JJ the first year.

Keep the core...and trade Diaw/James Jones plus #24 & #29 to get someone who can be a productive 7th & 8th man...and we're there.

I'd like to see Mike Miller...but I've read others that could help too. Heck...trade the picks to dump Diaw's & Banks salary...then sign Melvin Ely to part of the MLE. He wants to be here...and he'll never be a consistent scorer, he is a 6'10" wide body who can rebound...at least make Duncan work a little harder to get his points by using 6 fouls against him.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. We have no idea how bad the locker room issue is.

Fortunately Sarver gets along well with Amare so I would say it is far more likely he stays than he is traded.

Shark- I think that you're writing this loss off too easily on the suspensions. I'm not at all confident that we would've won game five at home, and even then if we'd have won game seven. Even in our victories we still had tremendous problems shutting down San Antonio, and as soon as Ginobli broke out of his funk we were going to have serious issues suspensions or not.

With Garnett you get toughness, defense, rebounding, and desire. Pretty much everything that we need to get over the hump.

However, I understand if we don't get him due to luxury tax considerations. If we don't then you have to get a guy like Ron Artest who can create his own shot and get to the hoop, and brings that defense and toughness.

I agree.

One thing no one has mentioned is that Amare and Shawn are both scheduled to be on the USA team this summer in Las Vegas. This could prove to be a good chance for them to bond as well as work out with some great players.

I'm not blaming the loss entirely on the suspensions...I give the Spurs credit...their wiley vets found a way to get it done (albeit a little dirty). We had plenty of chances to win though:

1. If Nash doesn't sit out the final part of the game with a nose bleed...we may have had a chance.
2. If Stoudemire was there for game 5 we win it (we were seriously short handed and still almost pulled it out). Granted, Game 7 wouldn't be a gimme...but I like our chances at home better than trying to win a close out game...in San Antonio.
3. Diaw didn't show up. Twice in game 6 I saw him with a clear path to the basket for an easy slam...and he instead decided to pass it (once resulting in a 24 second violation).
4. Barbosa doesn't go 2-17 from 3 point range without something being wrong. It had to be an injury...either mental or physical...but if he performs game 5 or 6 like the 6th man of the year...we win. Ginobili had some rough games too....but he sure turned it on when it counted.

My point is that I think the Suns are very close...and I'd rather see us fine tune the roster than making a complete overhaul. The Spurs are old...and will only get older...(Bowen 37, Horry 38, Duncan 32, Oberto 35, Ginobili 30, Finley 35, etc).

Much better?!?!?! :biglaugh: On what planet? No he is not. First off Amare has not even peaked in this league. He is only a 4 year pro. HELLO?!??! He will continue to get better. What about KG???? Is he going to continue to get better??

Seriously, how incredibly bad is this board getting lately? People just a short time ago were debating the difference between losing Marion and picking up KG and how much better would the team really be?

I think some people have taken either PANIC PILLS or STUPID PILLS. I don't know which. Trading an 11 year pro that will never get better for a 5 year pro (with only 3 years as a starter if you don't count his rookie season and last year) that will continue to get better would damage the long term outlook for this franchise.

With Garnett you get toughness, defense, rebounding, and desire. Pretty much everything that we need to get over the hump.

You can't be serious. Since when has KG been considered tough? Have you ever seen him play against bigger men on the block? He gets backed down like a twig against a tornado. Since day 1 he came into this league that has been a knock on him. They have always said KG needed to get bigger. It never happened. If you think we are soft in the middle now then wait until you remove someone like Amare and replace him with KG. Please.

Unless yoru replacing Marion for KG a trade makes ZERO sense. Would I like to add KG to this roster? No doubt. But replacing Amare with KG doesn't get us any closer to a title.

Since it's not going to happen, I wouldn't get too excited. The argument is not whether it is a good trade, but whether RIGHT NOW KG is better than Amare. Not three years from now and not whether he's worth $6 million more to the Suns than Amare, just who is more effective for one series right now.

Factor in how KG does not have a real point guard and everybody can double team him, his stats are awfully impressive. He is a great defensive player and ball handler, which are not yet something Amare shines at.

But Amare is going to keep improving, so the difference is not likely to be all that great a few years from now. There is no trade I could imagine that would make sense, but I have a lot of respect for KG.

Garnett is a much better passer, defender, and rebounder. It's a push on scoring. So yes, I'd consider Garnett to be much better than Amare. Amare might continue to get better, he might hit a wall, and he might be lost due to injury after he has to go under the knife again in a couple of years. You never know. Garnett is a proven commodity, and I don't want to wager Nash's final years on the chance that Amare might suddenly improve his defense by leaps and bounds.

Garnett is bigger than Amare, a much better rebounder, and infinitely better defensively. So how are we getting softer in the middle by swapping KG for Amare. What exactly does Amare do better than KG? Dunk? That's pretty much it. Plus, Garnett is the last person that you'd hear Nash and Raja calling out for laziness and complacency. Nash and Garnett would be an incredibly mentally tough duo.

Having said that. Does getting a couple more points per game with the best offensive team in the NBA get you closer to a title? KG's assist totals go down because he won't be needed to distribute with Nash on this team. He gets a couple more rebounds per game. Does any of that scream INSTANT title? Please. They are not that far apart stat wise. It's not like you trading KG and dumping Kwame Brown.

At any rate, you can't make a trade based on 1 or 2 years anyway. You have to make smart trades or this franchise could be looking at another 40 some years without a title.

Barbosa and Diaw were the ones who didn't produce...just about everyone else did. I think Barbosa improves and does a better job in next year's playoffs...Diaw I'm not sure about. Is he now content with his $9mil per year deal? Will he always be passive? I have to think that a guy capable of a triple double one game...and "0-for" the next may be the one who isn't mentally tough. Amare brought it every night.

The biggest difference wasn't even in the stats:

Garnett:
  • 8-time All-Defensive:
  • First Team: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005
  • Second Team: 2006, 2007
Stoudemire:
  • Crickets
We could still contain Duncan withouth having to sacrifice our offense.
