Why is Russ Grimm considered the best Oline Coach in the NFL?

Looking at the Steelers the last few years they mostly ranked in the middle on YPC and protecting the QB.

The average of their running backs is lower than Edge's for his career.
Why does everybody consider him so great?

You dont think the fact that they had a young inexperienced quarterback who tended to hold on to the ball way too long???
I could be wrong but Jerome bettis was never a guy who gained 6 ypc. They consistantly made progress, were steady, moved the chains and played tough.

Who cares what their average is compared to Edge's. Are you aware that he is going to the Hall Of Fame????? I would expect for their average to be less than his.

Oh yeah, they won a super bowl too.

I can see the YPC thing because they get over 4 yards consistently ever time. While other teams may be higher becasue they get 0 yards one play then 20 the next. Like the Falcons. They are also know to not miss their assignments and play nasty making the D very beat up after half time. Teams know they are going to run yet they still do it and do it consistently. They also play with very few penalties.

But what he does for the run game he does not do for the pass game. What ever a player has in pass blocking skill coming out of college is about as good as it will get under Grimm. Every OL under Grimm has been at the bottom or near the bottom of the elague ever year. Just take a look at the footballoutsiders web site for that ranking throughout the years. He is far from a complete OL coach IMO.

I think he is a good to really good OL coach(maybe at the bottom of top 5 coaches list) but his status gets raised because he was a Hog and Steeler coach which raises him to the undeserved(IMO) best OL coach in the league status that he gets from a lot of media and people.

Batch was getting sacked at a just a high of a rate as Ben was. And Grimms OL's were giving away sacks at just a high a level before Ben as well. Pass blocking is not Grimms thing and has admitted as such in plenty an interview. Something to the effect of, "Run blocking is pretty much all I look for in an OL because there are TE's and RB/FB's that can help with pass blocking"

"Best"? According to who? I know he is well-known, and generally well-regarded, but I don't think he's unaminousily the best.

I hear about those types of comments constantly from ESPN, Foxsports, Sporting News, here, etc, etc...

Also, if he sucks on pass protection why doesn't he hire an assistant that is good at it, get better somehow? I care about the run game but I care about our QB's health even more...

Grimms lines in Pitt were known to be very disciplined .. their championship year the Oline went something like 10 games in a row without a penalty called against them as they finished the season and won their first 3 playoff games ...

That I would like to see ...

I would prefer the guy who was the Oline coach at Denver myself, but I guess we'll see...

Why does everybody consider him so great?

Because the Cardinals hired him?
