so a young linebacker had his NFL dreams crushed so BASK could save face and look like they were actually doing something about our punting situation...got it.

They do what they want
No respect for fans and for the young players working their tails off to live the dream of playing in the nfl
Then we have this garbage collecting paychecks week by week

Thats fine with me.

Ultimately a punt is just a punt. The defense still has to play defense.

A kick, on the other hand, is points. If Wile isnt comfortable holding the kick yet, then we absolutely should not risk it. A punt rarely decides a game. This year, a kick has determined the game twice for us.

I get that Bodha, but giving your opponents short field position every week with crappy punts makes it a lot easier for them to score. We have one of the better defenses in the league statistically (due to short fields), but we aren't stopping people from scoring... maybe if they had to go an extra 20 yards per drive then we'd have a better chance of stopping them.

You're also right that a kick has lost us 2 games this year, but one of those games was on a botched hold by Butler... the snap wasn't good, but the catch/hold was equally bad. He trapped it to the ground when he could've got a hand under it for a clean catch.

Punting can usually decide if you are scoring touchdowns instead of settling for fieldgoals, field position is huge in the NFL

Clearly the solution is to not punt :D.

Original statement still stands. Kicking is 1 degree of kevin bacon from points. Punts are (unknown) degrees from points.

Bird in the hand..

Dont count your chickens...

whichever one is more applicable. Kicking is more important than punting...as seen today vs Miami.

Ok... but Butler held for the FGs & XPs... which were still missed or blocked.

I don't know if Wile would've done better or worse... possibly a lot worse in those wet conditions.

Bad weather conditions are a bigger factor than kicking or punting.

Don't know about that, field position seemed to play very highly with the wet conditions

Field position is flat out huge and Butler has killed us more time than not this year and even last year. Not gonna even look at the stats, but our FP in every game the last few years is among the worst! We constantly start backed up and gift other teams great FP. Do not tell me FP is not huge in NFL games and our ST is such a joke we are always on the losing side in field position. We put more pressure on our O and D with our atrocious ST play.

Agreed. But missed kicks even moreso.

When looking back on several of our late game losses (and tie) this year, nobody points back to a punt. But everybody clearly remembers the kicks.

It's not exclusionary. Just because kicking's more vital doesn't mean there's an excuse for keeping the awful Butler on the roster. What's the argument here?

Im all for booting Butler, but the topic of this thread is in regards to Wile vs Butler.

Wile is uncomfortable holding kicks, and since kicks are more important than punts, then its my position that we keep Butler the starter for the fact he can hold kicks, despite the fact Wile is a better punter.

conclusion: Wile needs to get his butt up to speed holding kicks ASAP

Please provide me a quote where Wile said he's uncomfortable holding for kicks. Sounds like you're making up a statement to support your argument.

But punts absolutely determined the outcome at the end of the game Sunday. After the score was tied Miami has a nice punt that put us back in our territory. Shortly thereafter Butler then delivers his gentle gift and Miami is practically in field goal range. the rest is history.

A field goal ended the game, not a punt.

If they missed the FG, then the game goes on.

To me you are putting the horse in front of the carrot so to speak, because field position is a big factor in deciding if you can score in the first place

I really think you're just trolling at this point, because there's no way you're even trying to construct a cogent argument here. The OPPOSITION'S field goal ended the game; THE CARDINALS' punting gifted them the field position for that field goal. We're arguing about our own team here. Our bad punt directly led to the loss. No way are you able to obfuscate that point, especially in the feeble post I quoted here.

Youre confused. We arent specifically discussing Miami vs AZ. We're discussing the principle of the value of kicks vs the value of punts, in general.

Kicks > punts.

When applying this principle to our own team, its the reason Butler is starting over Wile.

Bodha is being obtuse as usual.

Here is a screen shot from the missed XP. Where is the ball? Butler was playing with it and took too long to get it down. This was the game right here. Difference of playing for OT or playing for the win. Butler botched the snap and it cost us the game.
