The Cardinals may not have a QB or even an OC right now, but what they do have in newly appointed HC Steve Wilks is the kind of leader and communicator who can make the Cardinals stand out as a flock of tough, tenacious, high flying birds.

Charley Casserly of NFLN put the hiring of Steve Wilks in the perfect perspective. Casserly alluded to the Rooney's philosophy for hiring head coaches: insert a strong leader and communicator at the top. It doesn't matter which side of the ball the coach specializes in. Find a head coach who can galvanize and motivate a team of 53 men.

Casserly also made an excellent point that while some pundits and fans question how prepared Wilks is to be a head coach if he's only been a coordinator for 1 year, he said "Wilks would have been a coordinator for years now had the Panthers and the Chargers not blocked other teams from hiring him."

Wilks was the assistant head coach at Carolina for the past six years. Whenever Ron Rivera had to miss some practices for personal reasons, he wanted Wilks to run the team. As an assistant head coach Wilks has the best possible training to become a head coach. In Carolina, in that role, he stood out. Michael Bidwill and Steve Keim said that unsolicited endorsements from Wilks' players, past and present, came pouring in. And the common theme was that Wilks not only helped them grow into standouts as players, he invested in them as human beings and he treated them like men.

One of the most resounding things Wilks said at his press conference was that he wants all of his coaches to adopt his three pillars of trust, commitment and accountability---and---in that regard---he wants all of his coaches to teach fundamentals, demand fundamentals and---get this---"find ways to relate to different personalities."

After all, Wilks said, "it is the coaches' top priority to develop the players."

Not sure if this was an answer to questions posed during his interviews by Bidwill and Keim---one can just imagine that MB&SK have been concerned about the development of the young players on the roster---or whether Wilks had the perspicacity and foresight in doing his research on the Cardinals to recognize that player development is one of the team's main improvement areas---either way, Wilks manifested a core understanding of the kind of coaching it is going to take to maximize the talent on the roster.

Wilks was straightfoward in acknowledging what he called "the elephant in the room" (aka the QB situation). He said that this was discussed at length with MB&SK and that there is an "aggressive plan" in place (via free agency, trade and the draft) so that the Cardinals can "put a product on the field that can compete for a championship."

On Arizona Sports radio an hour later when asked what the greatest moment of his football coaching career is, Wilks didn't even have to think about it. He said."Today is the greatest moment of my career." He said, "I have always dreamed of being a head coach in the NFL." Furthermore, when asked about the time he first sensed that he was destined to coach, Wilks replied that he has always had a feeling that "it's hard to blend in when you are born to stand out."

Perfectly said from a newborn cardinal...donning brilliant red feathers, eye blacks and yellow beak... cardinals do find it hard and even impossible to blend in, because they are born to stand out, especially in the desert.:newcards:

Welcome to the Birdgang in Arizona, Steve Wilks and family!

It's going to be very interesting to see how the differences between Wilkes and BA play out... I am very, very optimistic on this hire. Make no mistake, like just about the entire universe, I really liked Uncle Bruce... How could you not like a guy who would crack open the trunk of his car and tend bar after practice!
But, I think BA's schtick can only go so far... While the players generally enjoyed playing for BA, I am not sure BA's loosy, goosy style was what was best for the team as a whole. Did his position on stretching before practice have any harmful impacts? Did his blind loyalty to "his guys", like Amos Jones, Goodwin and others, hold the team back? Did BA really, truly extract every ounce of performance from his team (players and coaches)?
I don't know if the results under Wilkes will be much better than what BA produced. And really, without any QB's signed for the 2018 season, it's hard to believe that Wilkes is set up for success this coming season.
However, I remain optimistic that Wilkes seems to combine a lot of that Uncle Bruce style, where his players very clearly love to play for the guy - but, he balances it in ways BA may not have, with a more regimented style... Time will tell.

Awesome write up Mitch and now I'm officially excited by the Wilks hire.

I can't wait to see how he assembles his coaching staff.

I'm nervous about the OC decision, but Wilks has a specific coaching criteria he is committed to. Thus, I am curious to see whom he appoints.

It’s going to be McCoy.

These dudes never learn & always hire the same heaping pile of garbage because they are scared to take risks. I’d rather hire a college OC before McCoy.

Funny you said that, because today I was thinking about David Cutlliffe of Duke and wondering whether he would make the jump to NFL OC. That guy is awesome.

Unless they unretire Peyton Manning or Palmer, Mcoy 's offense blows big time with whoever they get.

Wilks and Flores were my 1 and 1a choices all along. Glad they got #1.

I stated in another thread that 3 years from now, only 2 coaches from this current crop will still be coaching with the same team: Wilks and Patricia. I think they are both in the best fit for their coaching careers.

Scared to take risks? They just came off of Arians, whom nobody would give a HC job...and now they have Wilks, who barely has coordinator experience, let alone HC experience. Seems pretty risky, to me.

McCoy is hot garbage, though... I'd prefer Bevel.

One of the most important moves Wilks has already made is his bringing Ray Brown here to coach the OL. This is one heck of a coach who actually is renowned for developing players. Absolutely love this move. Ray is coming back to the valley, as he was part of the inaugural season here for the Cardinals.

Holcomb is a very bright young coach who is well respected and also known for developing, motivating and relating to his players. I think he has a big future as well.

I'm hoping Wilks finds a way to retain Buckner and Leftwich in some role.

As a former Chargers fan I would really really hate McCoy as the OC. The guy is useless and gutless

No, my brother, I meant hiring the same ole same ole guys who have been blah every where they went. Like McCoy is the best example. How is he still getting coaching offers? The consensus is that Whiz was the main one for Rivers’ career revival, & everyone knows Peyton is the real coach of his offense, like LeBron pretty much.

The OC is going to be Defillippo. He was rumored to be with Wilks when this process started. Wilks said he hopes complete his staff “around the Super Bowl”. Not “before”, but “around”.

I hope so, hoping a verbal backdoor agreement has taken place. Maybe I missed this, but have they crossed paths coaching?

Totally agree. The Cards are my team, but I also follow the Chargers and McCoy is the kind of coach who will always lean conservative (punting, safe throws, etc.), plus he’s terrifically unimaginative.

No, they have never coached together. They have coached against each other though and it is rumored that they have developed a strong respect for one another from battling it out from opposing sidelines.

“Pondering his options”?

That’s sounds as if he might have been offered the job, but might be scared to take it without a QB in place.

Personally I think he’s a much better fit that McCoy. Let’s hope like hell we don’t get this guy

I couldnt find anything when I googled it yesterday. But Wilks was said to have DeFillipo as his OC when he interviewed for the Giants position.
