This Washington hunch you've got has you pretty spooked hasnt it? I dont know why you're getting all worked up about Daryl Washington, the guy is a very good player at his position. Sure he doesnt have the physical stature you'd want somebody to play at that position but it hasnt hampered him greatly in the past. The guy is an excellent performer at what he does and i have no doubt to believe he has both the capacity and the motivation to add 10-15lbs or with our strength and conditioning team. Maybe not immediately but he'll get there if we take him. There would be no need for it to happen immediately as he allready has shown that he has the skill set to perform at his current weight.
The only way i actually see any part of your predicition coming true is that the cards trade down to get Washington at the top of the second.Im one of his bigges
I'm all about draft value. That's my biggest concern. You get good value, and your team improves. You reach for needed players, your team gets worse because the marginal cost is so much higher.
The Cards' mouthpieces aren't putting Washington's name out there on accident. Last week during Urban's chat he didn't really know any of the prospects. Now him and Wolfley are enamoured with Washington? That's no accident.
I love Daryl Washington as a 3rd round pick. I'm satisfied with him as a second round pick. But at 26th overall? It's terrible. If we're picking Daryl Washington 26th overall, it means that we're passing on 10-20 value players who are
objectively better prospects than him, but aren't at positions of need.
I've been a fan of this team too long to see that happen again. It's
exactly what happened when we drafted Calvin Pace because we ran out of DL talent. It's
exactly what happened when we drafted Levi Brown because we didn't have an alternate plan at the OT position.
What we'd basically be doing is starting Paris Lenon for a year and a half in the hopes that Daryl Washington develops into a starting caliber player. You can't do that with position players who are first-round picks. They have to be starting or making major contributions within the first three-quarters of the season.
You develop 2nd and 3rd round picks on the bench for 2 years. You can't afford to do that with the 26th overall pick in the draft unless you're taking a QB.
What the Cards would basically be doing is saving money on Karlos Dansby by drafting a guy 26th overall that can be somewhat like him two years from now. It is--in a big way--putting up the white flag on the 2010 season, because you're admitting that your defense is going to be worse for the next year at least. I like Matt Leinart, but the defense has to at least hold serve (14th in the NFL in scoring) from 2009 if the Cards are going to repeat as division champs.
