We know that Buster Davis didn't pan out, but Alan Branch didn't do anything last season and Levi Brown (walking softly here...) had the normal ups and downs as a rookie. Considering that our first day was kind of a wash, I'm not sure where the confidence comes from.

Can't judge rookies by their first year alone. Too soon to get real worried about that draft yet.

I mean hell, we're talking about the importance of Calvin Pace in some of these threads.

What's that say?

That you can't judge players by their first three years?

I'd much rather trade down with the Cowboys for there 22 and 28, as long as we are talking about one sided deals. I have a feeling that JJ would really love to draft one of the two Ark RBs. With McFadden probably out of reach, all we have to do is convince him that the Texans are in love with Jones (which wouldn't shock me, he'd be perfect in the ZBS they run) to entice him to move up to 16.

At 22 take Campbell or Merling, at 28 take Cromartie or Jenkins, and then at 50 take Charles, and 81 Hills (yes, i'm a UT homer)

I'm with you. I'm saying that it's too early to say whether any of last season's draft class has panned out or not. We can say that Buster Davis definitely didn't pan out, and that Steve Breaston mostly has. But the jury is still very much out on all the other guys.

But Pace wasn't any good for four years.

No, I was saying that for the first three years Pace was judged by many to be lacking anything resembling "importance".

So the answer to Super's question of "What's that say?" is that it can sometimes take a lot longer than one year to fully form an opinion about a player.

The way this draft is shaping up, if the Cards sit still at #16, the best talent will be at CB and RB. This is why is is essential the Cards re-sign Calvin Pace.

??? Why ???

At the right price, yes. But Pace is not a guy to give a blockbuster deal to. He has only had one solid season, and it was during his contract year.

I dunno. I wouldn't get into a huge bidding war for him. It would be a waste of money.
Please tell me who you would fill his spot with. There are no other players half as good as him on the FA list at his position.

You can hate on him all you like but I just dont get why you would. The guy was drafted by an idiot who reached to get a player who didn't even fit the team's current defensive scheme. How this has always been blamed on Pace is beyond me.

Te guy didn't come out and play this past season because it was a contract year, it was because he was finally playing his natural position. IMO he is easily the most underrated player on the D side of the ball, and all of this interest in him from other teams is proof of that.

Pace needs to be resigned, and soon.

I think Pace is kind of a mystery. Was he playing well because he was in a contract year? Was he playing well because he was finally being used in a way that fit his skill set? It's totally impossible to say. I wish I knew, because it would make it much easier for me to figure out the value he has to the team.

Personally, based on what I remember from him two seasons ago when he played SLB in a 4-3 (athletic but lost), and from what I saw this season (effective starter), I'd guess that he's finally being used in the right way. I'm willing to offer Pace--at this point--a slightly better contract than the team gave Gerald Hayes two years ago (Hayes hadn't done much besides end up on IR every year at that point). I think his open-market value is going to surpass that, though.

But I think that it's too complicated to scream from the rooftops that the Pace that we saw this season is the Calvin Pace that will last, rather than a guy who performed in a contract year.

The only way that I would trade up to #7 is if McFadden, Gholston, Jake or Chris Long is there. I doubt the Pats would even consider that deal and I really don't think any of those 4 players will still be available.

I see the Pats taking either Dan Connor or Leodis McKelvin at 7.

I love Chris Long and think he is likely the best player in this draft, but I am not too sure the 3-4 would suit him all that well.

I think there;s a good chance one of the aforementioned studs might slide a couple of spots come draft day. Add Dorsey to one of those guys that should go in that range, maybe Brohm or Ryan, too. If teams draft for need, McFadden might be available for the Pats. Scary.

If none of those guys are there, look for Clady to shoot up draft boards after the combine and for him to be the NE pick (maybe a knee-jerk reaction to the SB loss, maybe not?)

It's been whats seems like a quarter of a century since we had a 1st round pick lower than #10.

I'd love for Connor to slide to us. He was moved inside because his team was weak there, but he started out and had better numbers on the outside. Granted, another player might be a better fit for us at 16, but if he's still sitting there, I wouldn't be disappointed if we took him.

I keep reading that some teams think Pace can be a 10 sack guy..... that means a hefty contract. I doubt we get a hometown discount either. That would be a TON of money tied up at LB.
